This book is an outgrowth of a 1986 seminar of the same title presented at the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association. While some of the authors are not necessarily among "the most respected members of the profession" (p. xv), most of them have been publishing or presenting papers on their respective topics for some time, so their participation in this volume comes as no surprise.
