Book Experimental and Theoretical Characterization of a Hall Thruster Plume

Download or read book Experimental and Theoretical Characterization of a Hall Thruster Plume written by Yassir Azziz and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) However, comparison of plume simulation and experimental results at a non-zero background pressure showed deficiencies in the collision model of the plume simulation. An analytical expression for current density obtained using a elf-similar plume model was compared to extrapolated current density at zero pressure and showed good agreement. In addition, an analytical model derived for current density of source ion collisions with neutrals was consistent with experimental measurements and confirms the deficiencies in the simulation's collision model. In summary, experimental, numerical and analytical results indicate that the method of determining in-orbit plume divergence from laboratory measurements is valid and can be used to integrate Hall thrusters with the spacecraft.

Book Plasma Simulations by Example

Download or read book Plasma Simulations by Example written by Lubos Brieda and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of plasmas is crucial in improving our understanding of the universe, and they are being increasingly utilised in key technologies such as spacecraft thrusters, plasma medicine, and fusion energy. Providing readers with an easy to follow set of examples that clearly illustrate how simulation codes are written, this book guides readers through how to develop C++ computer codes for simulating plasmas primarily with the kinetic Particle in Cell (PIC) method. This text will be invaluable to advanced undergraduates and graduate students in physics and engineering looking to learn how to put the theory to the test. Features: Provides a step-by-step introduction to plasma simulations with easy to follow examples Discusses the electrostatic and electromagnetic Particle in Cell (PIC) method on structured and unstructured meshes, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), and Vlasov solvers Covered topics include Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) collisions, surface interactions, axisymmetry, and parallelization strategies. Lubos Brieda has over 15 years of experience developing plasma and gas simulation codes for electric propulsion, contamination transport, and plasma-surface interactions. As part of his master’s research work, he developed a 3D ES-PIC electric propulsion plume code, Draco, which is to this date utilized by government labs and private aerospace firms to study plasma thruster plumes. His Ph.D, obtained in 2012 from George Washington University, USA, focused on a multi-scale model for Hall thrusters utilizing fluid-kinetic hybrid PIC codes. He has since then been involved in numerous projects involving development and the use of plasma simulation tools. Since 2014 he has been teaching online courses on plasma simulations through his website: particleincell.com.

This book was released on 2007-01-14 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rocket and air-breathing propulsion systems are the foundation on which planning for future aerospace systems rests. A Review of United States Air Force and Department of Defense Aerospace Propulsion Needs assesses the existing technical base in these areas and examines the future Air Force capabilities the base will be expected to support. This report also defines gaps and recommends where future warfighter capabilities not yet fully defined could be met by current science and technology development plans.

Book Plasma Engineering

Download or read book Plasma Engineering written by Michael Keidar and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-03-06 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma Engineering is the first textbook that addresses plasma engineering in the aerospace, nanotechnology, and bioengineering fields from a unified standpoint. It covers the fundamentals of plasma physics at a level suitable for an upper level undergraduate or graduate student, and applies the unique properties of plasmas (ionized gases) to improve processes and performance over a wide variety of areas such as materials processing, spacecraft propulsion, and nanofabrication. The book starts by reviewing plasma particle collisions, waves, and instabilities, and proceeds to diagnostic tools, such as planar, spherical, and emissive probes, and the electrostatic analyzer, interferometric technique, and plasma spectroscopy. The physics of different types of electrical discharges are considered, including the classical Townsend mechanism of gas electrical breakdown and the Paschen law. Basic approaches and theoretical methodologies for plasma modeling are described, based on the fluid description of plasma solving numerically magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations and the kinetic model particle techniques that take into account kinetic interactions among particles and electromagnetic fields. Readers are then introduced to the widest variety of applications in any text on the market, including space propulsion applications and application of low-temperature plasmas in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The latest original results on cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) applications in medicine are presented. The book includes a large number of worked examples, end of chapter exercises, and historical perspectives. There is also an accompanying plasma simulation software covering the Particle in Cell (PIC) approach, available at http://www.particleincell.com/blog/2011/particle-in-cell-example/. This book is appropriate for grad level courses in Plasma Engineering/Plasma Physics in departments of Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Physics. It will also be useful as an introduction to plasma engineering and its applications for early career researchers and practicing engineers. Book Development of Advanced Hall Plume Models

Download or read book Development of Advanced Hall Plume Models written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this work was twofold: (a) To develop numerical or analytical methods capable of dealing with the combination of three-dimensionality and strong anisotropy that occurs in the plume region near the exit of a Hall thruster, and (b) To explore the use of fluid-based models in plume computations, so as to overcome the granularity associated with normal particle-based approaches. In area (a) we have carefully formulated the 3D near-plume problem using a combination of heavy particle tracking and magnetized electron fluid equations, and have to a large extent clarified the structure of the solutions, such that numerical implementation should be greatly facilitated. In area (b) we have concentrated on an examination of the far-field of the plume, where the geomagnetic field takes over the dynamics. Again, only a formulation and a suggested method for numerical implementation were completed. Two graduate Theses are still in progress in these two areas, and we expect to issue a supplementary report when they are finalized.
