Book A Review of Algebra Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Review of Algebra Classic Reprint written by Romeyn Henry Rivenburg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of Algebra IN most high schools the course in Elementary Algebra is finished by the end of the second year. By the senior year, most students have forgotten many of the principles, and a thorough review is necessary in order to prepare college candi dates for the entrance examinations and for effective work in the freshman year in college. Recognizing this need, many schools are devoting at least two periods a week for part of the senior year to a review of algebra. For such a review the regular textbook is inadequate. From an embarrassment of riches the teacher finds it laborious to select the proper examples, while the student wastes time in searching for scattered assignments. The object of this book is to conserve the time and effort of both teacher and student, by providing a thorough and effective review that can readily be completed, if need be, in two periods a week for a half year. Each student is expected to use his regular textbook in algebra for reference, as he would use a dictionary, to recall a definition, a rule, or a process that he has forgotten. He should be encouraged to think his way out wherever possible, however, and to refer to the textbook only when forced to do so as a last resort. The definitions given in the General Outline should be reviewed as occasion arises for their use. The whole Outline can be profitably employed for rapid class reviews, by covering the part of the Outline that indicates the answer, the method, the example, or the formula, as the case may be. The whole scheme of the book is ordinarily to have a page of problems represent a day's work. This, of course, does not apply to the Outlines or the few pages of theory, which can be covered more rapidly. By this plan, making only a part of the omissions indicated in the next paragraph, the essentials of the algebra can be readily covered, if need be, in from thirty to thirty-two lessons, thus leaving time for tests, even if only eighteen weeks, of two periods each, are allotted to the course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Algebra The first chapter contains review problems, without subject-matter, covering the whole ground of Elementary Algebra, for use in classes which are found to need such a review. The text proper begins with the subject of Radicals. It has been the experience of the authors that the average student, Who has had only a year and a half of Algebra, enters college with a very limited knowledge of Radicals, Theory of Exponents, and Quadratics; and as these subjects are most essential to his future success, a thorough review is needed. They have, therefore, been treated very fully. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Course in Algebra This book is designed to follow the authors' First Course in Algebra or any other text of similar scope and treatment. Experience shows that when a student returns to the study of algebra, after even a summer's vacation, a review is very necessary; and that it is absolutely indispensable if he comes back after a year spent on geometry. The review presented in the early chapters is brief, yet sufficiently thorough. Each review topic has been given a broader and more advanced treat ment than is permissible in a first course. New material is used throughout and many new applications are given in order to make the entire review appeal to the student as fresh and inviting. Book School Algebra Classic Reprint

Download or read book School Algebra Classic Reprint written by H. L. Rietz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Algebra This Algebra is the second volume of a series of two books. It contains material for a half-year course and presupposes a year's work such as is provided in the authors' First Course, or any similar text. Since, in many schools, a year or more intervenes between the first and second courses in algebra, it has been deemed advisable to include a review of the First Course before proceeding to new subjects. This part of the book is, however, more than a mere hasty resume. While the student is reviewing the topics of the first year, he is at the same time making a distinct advance by seeing the subject from new view-points, which his added maturity and training enable him to appreciate. The selection of new topics in this Second Course is in accord with current practice in the best high schools. While the book contains material for thorough preparation for college, the authors have not had in mind solely the students making such preparation, but rather the great body of students who will go no further in our educational system than the high school. The chapter devoted to the notion of a function is introduced in 0 the belief that the high school student should become somewhat familiar with the idea Of the correspondence between two re lated variables. Along with the notion of a function, the graph is presented with a View to leading the students to picture and to visualize this correspondence. Book Advanced Algebra Classic Reprint

Download or read book Advanced Algebra Classic Reprint written by Jos V. Collins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Algebra The review Of the First Year Course to radicals is intentionally rapid, being presented as succinctly as clearness and thoroughness permit. The exercises are moderate in number and difficulty. Since radicals and quadratics usually come at the end Of the First Year Course, they are seldom as well understood or remembered as the earlier topics, and therefore should be reviewed in more detail. One aim sought in Part I was to unify the preceding mathematics, - arithmetic, algebra, and plane geometry, - as effectively as possible. In accordance with a suggestion Of the Society for the Promotion Of Engineering Education, there will be found on page 89 a Summary Of the fundamental principles Of elementary algebra, for study and reference. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Algebra Chapter X., with which the pupil would begin the second year's work, contains a thorough review of the simple rules. Here the more complicated processes are dealt with. The graphical work is introduced naturally in illustrating the negative quantity and in the solution of equations. Only graphs which can be drawn with the ruler and compasses are included in the book. More attention is given to methods of inspection in the extraction of roots. The long process for cube root is eliminated, as cube root is not now required in arithmetic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Algebra, Vol. 1 The authors have attempted to set forth, in simple language, the modern idea of function, without carrying the work to an unwarranted extreme. They have presented the graph in the same Spirit, introducing it gradually and with the definite purpose of leading the pupil to recognize, through visual aids, the nature of negative numbers and the number and nature of the roots of equations. Particular attention is called to the Cumulative Review in the Appendix. This furnishes the Opportunity for a careful review of all the preceding work at the end of each chapter, and the value of the plan will be apparent to every teacher. The authors wish to express their thanks to the many teachers who have assisted them either by their valuable suggestions or by their care in the reading of the proof. Any suggestions for further improvement of the work will be gratefully received. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Modern First Year Algebra Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern First Year Algebra Classic Reprint written by Webster Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern First Year Algebra The most notable undertaking in the field of instruction in mathe maties in the past decade has been the work of the National Committee on Mathematical Requirements, culminating in its summary report, recently issued, and in its final report which will appear in a short time. One immediate result of this undertaking has been a revision of the definitions of the units in high school mathematics by the College En trance Requirements Board. The extent to which the Wells and Hart First Year Algebra, written eleven years ago, harmonizes with these recent reports is most gratifying. This M odem First Year Algebra incorporates, first of all, the changes suggested by the eleven added years of experience of its author in teach ing the subject to boys and girls of high school grade; and secondly, other changes which are suggested by these recent reports. It is a new book. While, naturally, it is based upon the Wells and Hart First Year Algebra, the text has been rewritten wherever any improvement could be made in the instruction or expression. The explanations in the text are often more complete than those of the First Year Algebra, and those represented a high-water mark eleven years ago. This is done to help teachers not to endeavor to super sede them. The examples are all new, and so, too, are almost all the problems. Enough examples and problems are given in the text so that teachers will not need to seek drill material from other sources.
