Book excerpt: This thesis aims at caracterizing the influence of surface imperfections on the laminar-to-turbulent transition of a sucked boundary layer. On non-porous surfaces (without suction), two-dimensional surface imperfections, such as steps and gaps, can trigger premature transition. ONERA's expertise in this field of study has enabled the definition of critical height parameters above which, and given specific flow conditions, transition is triggered. With the increased interest in boundary layer suction systems to reduce fuel consumption, critical height parameters have to be extended to sucked boundary layers since the junction between porous and non-porous surfaces necessarily results in a surface discontinuity such as a step or gap. This thesis' objective is to design, build and test an experimental set-up to define such criteria for porous surfaces (with suction). Tests will first be performed in a subsonic wind tunnel facility and could be extended to the transonic regime.

This material was subsequently used in the manufacture of several hydrodynamic test models varying in size from 2 in. to 12 3/4 in. O.D. The small models have been tested and reported to show boundary layer stabilization and the larger models are awaiting tests at the Ordnance Research Laboratory. A unique property of this design has been found in its ability to recover its original porosity with simple back flushing, but more detailed studies would be required to identify the extent of this characteristic.
