Book Environment and Labor in the Caribbean

Download or read book Environment and Labor in the Caribbean written by Joseph Lisowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caribbean Perspectives series began as a response to the need for scholarly investigations into social, scientific, and economic conditions affecting the least understood, or written about, part of the Americas. In this second volume the authors have included explorations of aspects of management and climate; as well as social, literary, and educational concerns in the eastern Caribbean, along with an extended study of the labor situation in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The opening chapter on resource management training in the Caribbean underscores the need for cooperation among eastern Caribbean universities and provides a practical model for implementation. This is followed by a significant study of rainfall patterns that could influence economic and cultural planning in the Virgin Islands. School environment is assessed in the next chapter, and educators will see how the quality of social support and interactions function in organizational contexts, especially as they relate to teacher morale. How fact becomes fiction is chronicled in a chapter dealing with Samuel Selvon's autobiographical novel, A Brighter Sun. The media clearly had a se-rious problem separating fact from fiction in their reporting of the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo in St. Croix. The next chapter investigates the causes of looting following that storm and lays to rest some widespread misconceptions. The final chapters focus on the labor movements in the Virgin Islands, both from historical and sociological points of view. These chapters not only help explain certain tendencies in the Caribbean work force but also outline social implications for the future. Some of these findings are bound to be controversial, such as the author's contention that the legacy of slavery is still being felt. This volume of Caribbean Perspectives offers both factual accounts and challenging insights into the diversity of Caribbean life and culture. The ideas and data found here will reverberate and suggest a host of analogous circumstances elsewhere. This volume, and the series as such, will interest students of the Caribbean, Latin America, and social development in the Third World.

Book Establishing a Socio economic Monitoring Program for the Narrows to Inform Marine Conservation and Decision making in St Kitts and Nevis

Download or read book Establishing a Socio economic Monitoring Program for the Narrows to Inform Marine Conservation and Decision making in St Kitts and Nevis written by A. Laurel Arthurton and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Socio-economic monitoring (SocMon) in Nevis began in May 2008 with a training workshop. SocMon Nevis was part of a regional project Socio-economic monitoring by Caribbean Fishery Authorities (Fisheries SocMon) funded by a US International Coral Reef Conservation grant and implemented by the Center for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, and the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM). The study area chosen for socio-economic monitoring, The Narrows, the area between St. Kitts and Nevis, and the site of a proposed marine protected area (MPA) encompassing th e Booby Island Shoal. The site was thought to be an important candidate for the study since the proposed MPA will be one of a number of MPAs in a larger Marine Management Area (MMA) expected to cover both St. Kitts and Nevis and implemented by the National Integrated Coastal Zone Management Programme of the Federation. Furthermore, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is currently working with the government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis on a pilot project to develop a national marine zoning design that can provide for and balance all marine uses. Although the Narrows is not considered a MPA , with the recent interest in managing coastal and marine resources, the development of a comprehensive socio-economic database based on the baseline data collected in this study is timely and may be used to inform conservation and guide decision-making"--Executive summary.

Book Coastal Resource Management in the Wider Caribbean

Download or read book Coastal Resource Management in the Wider Caribbean written by Yvan Breton and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2006 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During Phase I, results of the project were summarised in individual case studies. In Phase II, more structured exchanges produced collective writing efforts, which gave the study a stronger comparative and analytical orientation. In addition to chapters dealing with analytical and methodological issues in coastal management, the essence of the volume lies in five comparative and synthesised case studies that focus on particular management problems in diverse social contexts. Although this text is written primarily for a research audience, it should be of interest to coastal planners, decision makers, and funding agency representatives because this type of thinking needs to be shared far more widely among these groups in the Caribbean. For instance, we argue that particular attention should be given to reaching a better balance between natural and social sciences in the management of natural resources.

Book Building Resilience to Climate Change in Small Island Developing States SIDS in the Caribbean

Download or read book Building Resilience to Climate Change in Small Island Developing States SIDS in the Caribbean written by C. D. Metcalfe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-25 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes approaches that integrate the environmental, economic, and physical domains with the values, and needs of the population are necessary to develop sustainable strategies that will enhance the resilience of small islands, within the context of inter-island differences in geology, ecology, societal attitudes, governance, and human and economic resources. The impacts of coastal damage and flooding are predicted to worsen during this century due to rising sea levels and increases in the frequency and intensity of storms. The usual approach to coastal protection in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean is to view both the hazards and the solutions from the “Ocean Side” perspective and to react with “hard” engineering solutions. These structural engineering approaches prevent damage and disruptions to services associated with predictable events but leave communities vulnerable to future events that do not follow historical trends. Furthermore, engineered structures do not adequately address the systemic nature of climate change nor account for compounding threats (e.g., coincidence of hurricane season and global pandemics). To move from this traditional strategy for managing risks from coastal hazards, we need to consider a portfolio of solutions that enhance island protection and community resilience. Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) are gaining attention as practical and cost-effective approaches for mitigating climate-based stressors. However, deployment of NBS strategies requires spatial coordination within the context of “ridge to reef” or integrated water resource management (IWRM) approaches that include the creation of conditions for social acceptance, equity, effective governance, and financial incentives.
