Book A Research Project on the Emulsifying and Homogenizing Properties of Block Copolymers in Polymer Blends

Download or read book A Research Project on the Emulsifying and Homogenizing Properties of Block Copolymers in Polymer Blends written by Robert E. Cohen and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years of ONR sponsored research in this laboratory has led to a clear and unified view of the emulsifying or homogenizing role of diblock copolymers in blends of amorphous rubbery polymers. Recent work emphasized that a similar, but more complex set of phenomena may be useful in the manipulation of semicrystalline polymer blend morphologies and properties. The research focused on model polymers comprised of nonpolar hydrocarbon repeat units. The work built on strong capabilities for in-house synthesis of the required homopolymers and diblock copolymers and for molecular, morphological, and mechanical characterization of the selected polymers. Keywords: Block copolymers, Emulsions.

Book Use of Block Copolymer as Polymer Blend Compatibilizer

Download or read book Use of Block Copolymer as Polymer Blend Compatibilizer written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical properties of polymer blends can be improved by the addition of block copolymers as compatibilizers. The objective of this study has been to systematically investigate the effect of added block copolymer to gain an understanding of the factors -- such as the amount, size, and structure of block copolymer -- that control the efficacy of the compatibilization. The rate of particle coarsening that occurs at the late stage of phase separation has been shown to be affected in terms of sensitivity by the presence of even a very small amount of block copolymer. On the assumption that the late stage proceeds by the Lipshitz-Slyozov mechanism, one can estimate the change in the interfacial tension resulting from the adsorption of block copolymer at the interface. The larger the size of the block copolymer, the more pronounced the reduction in the particle coarsening rate. When polymers are melt-blended, a larger block copolymer additive is again found to be more effective than smaller amounts of block copolymer.

Book Homogenizing Properties of Diblock Polymers in Blends of Corresponding Homopolymers

Download or read book Homogenizing Properties of Diblock Polymers in Blends of Corresponding Homopolymers written by Mark A. Hartney and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of blends was prepared form homopolymers and diblock coploymers of 1,2-polybutadiene and 1,4-polybutadiene. Samples were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis and transmission electron microscopy to determine whether a homogeneous or heterogeneous morphology existed. Although blends of the homopolymers exhibit phase separation, inclusion of an appropriate amount of a diblock polymer can lead to a homogeneous morphology. The materials examined covered a wide range of molecular weight, composition, and diblock copolymer fraction in the blend, enabling an experimental phase diagram to be determined. These findings are compared with current theories of phase behavior for blends of diblock copolymers and homopolymers. (Author).

Book Characterization of Polymer Blends

Download or read book Characterization of Polymer Blends written by Sabu Thomas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling the gap for a reference dedicated to the characterization of polymer blends and their micro and nano morphologies, this book provides comprehensive, systematic coverage in a one-stop, two-volume resource for all those working in the field. Leading researchers from industry and academia, as well as from government and private research institutions around the world summarize recent technical advances in chapters devoted to their individual contributions. In so doing, they examine a wide range of modern characterization techniques, from microscopy and spectroscopy to diffraction, thermal analysis, rheology, mechanical measurements and chromatography. These methods are compared with each other to assist in determining the best solution for both fundamental and applied problems, paying attention to the characterization of nanoscale miscibility and interfaces, both in blends involving copolymers and in immiscible blends. The thermodynamics, miscibility, phase separation, morphology and interfaces in polymer blends are also discussed in light of new insights involving the nanoscopic scale. Finally, the authors detail the processing-morphology-property relationships of polymer blends, as well as the influence of processing on the generation of micro and nano morphologies, and the dependence of these morphologies on the properties of blends. Hot topics such as compatibilization through nanoparticles, miscibility of new biopolymers and nanoscale investigations of interfaces in blends are also addressed. With its application-oriented approach, handpicked selection of topics and expert contributors, this is an outstanding survey for anyone involved in the field of polymer blends for advanced technologies.

Book Handbook of Industrial Water Soluble Polymers

Download or read book Handbook of Industrial Water Soluble Polymers written by Peter A. Williams and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural and synthetic water soluble polymers are used in a wide range of familiar industrial and consumer products, including coatings and inks, papers, adhesives, cosmetics and personal care products. They perform a variety of functions without which these products would be significantly more expensive, less effective or both. Written for research, development and formulation chemists, technologists and engineers at graduate level and beyond in the fine and specialty chemicals, polymers, food and pharmaceutical industries, the Handbook of Industrial Water Soluble Polymers deals specifically with the functional properties of both natural and synthetic water soluble polymers. By taking a function based approach, rather than a “polymer specific” approach the book illustrates how polymer structure leads to effect, and shows how different polymer types can be employed to achieve appropriate product properties.
