Book Gender Equity and Access to Economic Opportunities in Agriculture in Botswana

Download or read book Gender Equity and Access to Economic Opportunities in Agriculture in Botswana written by Botswana. Ministry of Agriculture. Division of Planning and Statistics and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a report of a study commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Division of Planning and Statistics (DAPS) in the wake of the Fourth UN Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995. The objective of the study was to consider the extent to which women are disadvantaged in the agricultural economy and the appropriate role for government in reducing any disparities. One of the statistical evidence the study presents suggests that, while on average women farm less land than men, they compensate for their relative lack of access to land by higher productivity. Secondly, although older women own less livestock than men, younger women farmers own as many cattle as male farmers of the same age. The report presents a profile of the role of women in agriculture faced by women. Discusses the role for government in alleviating gender imbalances in agriculture. Also presents the recommendations of the study and proposed plan of action.

Book The Economics of Water Management in Southern Africa

Download or read book The Economics of Water Management in Southern Africa written by Glenn-Marie Lange and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a valuable new tool for water management water resource accounting which significantly advances the economic analysis of water. Water resource accounts integrate detailed information about water supply and use with national income accounts to show the economic use of water, costs and tariffs paid, and the economic value of water for different economic uses. Based on the UN s handbook for environmental accounting, this book describes the implementation and policy application of water accounts in three African countries Botswana, Namibia and South Africa and discusses how they have been used by water managers. The book compares water use across the three countries, explaining the differences in water resources and water policy. In addition to the comprehensive outline of physical and monetary water accounts for each country, the authors provide an extensive discussion of water valuation as well as addressing a number of issues of regional importance, including water accounting for an international river basin and the impact of trade on each country s water use. By demonstrating the usefulness of water resource accounts, this book makes a major contribution to the literature on water economics and management, sustainable development, and to the development of environmental accounting in general. The Economics of Water Management in Southern Africa will appeal to a wide readership including: environmental and development economists NGOs concerned with sustainable development environmental advocacy groups professionals (economists and environmentalists) working in Africa on water and sustainable development issues water professionals national accounts experts and statisticians.

Book Improved Agricultural Water Management for Africa s Drylands

Download or read book Improved Agricultural Water Management for Africa s Drylands written by Christopher Ward and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D ryland regions in Sub-Saharan Africa are home to one-half of the region’s population and three-quarters of its poor. Poor both in natural resources and in assets and income, the inhabitants of drylands are highly vulnerable to droughts and other shocks. Despite a long history of interventions by governments, development agencies, and civil society organizations, there have been no sustained large-scale successes toward improving the resilience of drylands dwellers. Improved Agricultural Water Management for Africa’s Drylands describes the extent to which agricultural water management interventions in dryland regions of Sub-Saharan Africa can enhance the resilience and improve the well-being of the people living in those regions, proposes what can realistically be done to promote improved agricultural water management, and sets out how stakeholders can make those improvements. After reviewing the current status of irrigation and agricultural water management in the drylands, the authors discuss technical, economic, and institutional challenges to expanding irrigation. A model developed at the International Food Policy Research Institute is used to project the potential for irrigation development in the Sahel Region and the Horn of Africa. The modeling results show that irrigation development in the drylands can reduce vulnerability and improve the resilience of hundreds of thousands of farming households, but rainfed agriculture will continue to dominate for the foreseeable future. Fortunately, many soil and water conservation practices that can improve the productivity and ensure the sustainability of rainfed cropping systems are available. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate the potentially highly benefi cial role of water and water management in drylands agriculture in association with agronomic improvements, market growth, and infrastructure development, and to assess the technological and socioeconomic conditions and institutional policy frameworks that can remove barriers to adoption and allow wide-scale take-up of improved agricultural water management in the dryland regions of Sub-Saharan Africa.
