Book excerpt: Furunculosis: Multidisciplinary Fish Disease Research presents a fascinating insight into the opinions and the controversies which have led to current knowledge of this disease. It is the first book to cover one single fish disease by presenting not just the reviews, but also critical examination of the progress made by various disciplines. The multidisciplinary approach of the book makes it a valuable guide for veterinarians, fisheries biologists, and fish farm managers, as well as an excellent instructional text for students. The volume explores current research strategies and projects what developments can be expected in each field. Considers the whole disease and not just the pathogen, Aeromonas salmonicida Analyzes the state of modern knowledge on the disease Suggests topics for future research and uses furunculosis as a model for other diseases Highlights and summarizes each section's themes and concepts Presents a unique compendium of research information for all professionals working on furunculosis

Book Bacterial Fish Pathogens

Download or read book Bacterial Fish Pathogens written by Brian Austin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-09-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanded and updated, this second edition considers fish diseases in the context of the fish's environment, and includes coverage of many aspects of microbiology. The authors provide information on the structure of fish in order to help familiarize readers with general fish anatomy. All the bacterial taxa which have been reported as fish pathogens are included, and the material is subdivided for easy reference into sections which deal with characteristics of the diseases, isolation methods, characterization of the pathogens, diagnosis, epizootilogy, pathogenicity mechanisms and control. Written by bacteriologists for microbiologists, the book tabulates the identification procedures, and gives characteristics of pathogens, the diseases and their control. As farmed fish are of greater commercial importance, and the consequences of losses attributable to bacterial fish pathogens therefore of greater economic consequence, the authors concentrate on these rather than on wild stocks.

Book Bacterial Fish Pathogens

Download or read book Bacterial Fish Pathogens written by Brian Austin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts emphasis on the isolation, taxonomy, diagnosis (phenotypic, serology and molecular biology), epizootiology, pathogenicity mechanisms, and methods of disease control (by vaccination, immunostimulation, probiotics, prebiotics, plant products, and antimicrobial compounds. Co-infections, which are attributed to more than one microbial species have been discussed. Shortcomings in knowledge have been highlighted. This sixth edition is the successor to the original version, first published in 1987, and which fills the need for an up-to-date comprehensive text on the biological aspects of the bacterial taxa which cause disease in finfish. The book is primarily targeted at researcher workers, including postgraduate students, and diagnosticians. It is anticipated that the readership will include veterinary microbiologists, public health scientists and microbial ecologists.

Download or read book FISH DISEASES written by Takashi Aoki and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fish Diseases theme is a component of Encyclopedia of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Diseases caused by bacteria, viruses and certain parasites, have thus far been suggested as the main culprit for declining aquaculture production and are thus deemed responsible to for huge losses amounting to billions of dollars annually. There are a number of fish diseases that are of utmost importance due to their debilitating effects on both cultured and marine fish, and includes Streptococcosis caused by a number of Steptococcus spp., Furunclosis, Vibriosis, Edwasiellosis, Mycobacteriosis, Nocardiosis, to name a few. The need to prevent and counteract the effect of these diseases is therefore of paramount importance. In recent years, we saw the increase in studies focusing on fish diseases particularly on those involved in unveiling the etiological agents of the diseases and how to properly treat or eradicate them, which often involved chemotherapy or administration of antibiotics. To lessen the use of antibiotics which arguably brings with it harmful side effects, a lot have been put into the development of effective prophylactic methods against fish diseases such as vaccines and also on finding efficient and reliable means of diagnosing the disease. The volume covers in detail the various diseases in fish and shellfish caused by bacteria and viruses. The contributing authors of each section have had extensive experience with fish diseases and have outlined what we need to know regarding a particular disease in a manner that is both easy to understand and apply. In Chapter 1, the various methods for disease diagnosis, prevention including vaccination and treatment of fish diseases are discussed. Chapter 2 includes and presents the various ways fish and shellfish protect themselves or fight off disease causing pathogens through their immune systems. Chapters 3 and 4 describe the diseases caused by bacterial pathogens in inland water (or freshwater) and marine water, respectively. These chapters include the identification of bacterial species responsible for the diseases and how to properly diagnose and treat them. Chapter 5 presents fish diseases caused by viral pathogens, their etiological agents, diagnosis and treatment.
