Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Report on Bovine Tuberculosis In countries where there has been little or no importation Of cattle, and in which the native breeds still exist unchanged, as in many parts Of Russia, Austria and Spain, in the northern part Of Sweden and Norway, and in parts Of Africa, tuberculosis is practically unknown. This is true Of the cattle on the island of Jersey, where for more than a hundred years foreign cattle have not been introduced. In the United Stat-es the disease is very widely distributed. There are, however, large areas in which it is practically unknown. The Western steers that are killed in the slaughter houses of Kansas City, Omaha, Sioux City and Chicago, are practically free from it. In other localities, especially where there is an extensive interchange Of animals, a large percentage Of the herds are more or less affected. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the International Commission on the Control of Bovine Tuberculosis: Presented to the American Veterinary Medical Association September, 1910 The Commission met at Buffalo, New York, on the fifteenth day of December, nineteen hundred and nine, and elected as Chairman Dr. J. G. Rutherford, of Ottawa, Canada, and as Secretary, Dr. M. H. Reynolds, of St. Paul, Minnesota. Owing to the death of Dr. Leonard Pearson, and the inability to act of Mr. Louis Swift, the President appointed in the stead of these two gentlemen respectively, Dr. M. P. Ravenel of Madison, Wisconsin, and Mr. T. W. Tomlinson of Denver, Colorado. Later at the request of the Commission the President appointed Mr. J. J. Ferguson, of Chicago, Ill., as a representative of the United States Packing Industry, and Dr. J. N. Hurty of Indianapolis, Indiana, as representative of the Medical Health Officers of the United States. Report Of The International Commission On The Control Of Bovine Tuberculosis. To the President of the American Veterinary Medical Association: Owing to the great economic and sanitary significance of animal tuberculosis to the live stock industry of America, and the many and varied factors which must of necessity be accounted with in formulating successful measures for its eradication, the American Veterinary Medical Association, at its meeting in Chicago in September, 1909, appointed the International Commission on the Control of Bovine Tuberculosis. The Commission was instructed to study the problem of tuberculosis among cattle and to report at the next meeting of the Association upon reasonable and economically practicable methods or systems to be recommended to both officials and live stock owners for eradicating this great scourge of domesticated animals. It is recognized that tuberculosis is widely prevalent among cattle and other animals and that the frequency with which this great evil occurs is increasing rather than declining. As tuberculosis is one of the strictly preventable infections, there is good ground for the belief that through the formulation and enforcement of proper regulations the disease may eventually be entirely suppressed. Book Bovine Tuberculosis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bovine Tuberculosis Classic Reprint written by C. M. Haring and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-25 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bovine Tuberculosis All species of domestic animals are susceptible to tuberculosis but the disease is more prevalent in cattle, hogs and poultry than in other farm animals. Tuberculosis is readily transmitted from one individual to another of the same species by direct or indirect contact. On the other hand, transmission between species varies because of the existence of three more or less distinct types of tubercle bacilli, the human, the bovine and the avian. In general, tuberculosis found in cattle is induced by the bovine tubercle bacillus. However, local, non-progressive lesions have been produced experimentally in cattle by the human type, and rare cases of small, limited lesions due to natural infection with this type have been found also in this species. Cases of uterine infection of cattle with avian tuberculosis have been reported in Denmark. Tuberculosis in poultry has been found' to be caused by the avian type of tubercle bacillus in 100 percent of all cases studied. Hogs contract tuberculosis easily when fed on infected milk or when run ning in fields with tuberculous cattle or poultry. The disease induced in swine by the bovine bacillus is often fatal, but infection with the avian bacillus very seldom becomes progressive in swine, the lesions being limited usually to the lymph nodes of the head and neck. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human and Bovine Tuberculosis I have quoted these experiments at length for the reason that they seem Often to be overlooked, and for the further reason that they have recently been directly misquoted. Koch said in his address before the British Con gress on Tuberculosis, If one studies the older literature of the subject, and collects the reports of the numerous experiments that were made in former times by Chauveau, Gunther and Harms, Bollinger and others, who fed calves, swine and goats with the milk and pieces of the lungs Of tuber cular cattle, we find these always fell ill Of tuberculosis, whereas those that received human material with their food did not. Bollinger in 1879 inoculated a young calf in the peritoneal cavity with material from a human lung. When killed after seven months the mesentery and peritoneal covering of the spleen presented a number of tumors from the size of a pea to that of a walnut and which microscopically were identical with those found in pearly disease under natural conditions. The retro peritoneal and mesenteric glands were tuberculous also. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rutherford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Control of Bovine Tuberculosis: A Paper Before Section VII. Of the International Congress on Tuberculosis, at Washington, D. C., October 1, 1908 Close attention to and observation of the animals undergoing the test are, in my opinion, indispensable. Even with them it is possible for mistakes to be made; with out them the tuberculin test is very apt to be badly discredited. The older veterinarians here will recollect that, prior to the discovery of tuber culin, much attention was paid, both by teachers and practitioners. To the clinical diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis. Of late years this phase of practice has been almost entirely lost sight of, the younger men practically depending on tuberculin as a diag nostic. This state of affairs is regrettable and should be remedied by cultivating, with regard to cases of tuberculosis, that habit of painstaking observation which alone makes for success in the diagnosis of most of the other maladies to which dumb animals are subject. I might perhaps explain that the foregoing remarks on the necessity of care and exactitude in making tests are intended to emphasize the idea that only skillful and Specially trained men can with safety be employed in this work, no small difficulty in itself, when it comes to undertaking a universal and compulsory testing policy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Final Report of the Departmental Committee on Tuberculosis, Vol. 1: Report In the circumstances, the Committee propose to deal in this Report mainly with the measures which should, in their opinion, be taken for the prevention of tuberculosis in general with Special reference to the questions relating to bovine tuberculosis and tuberculosis in children, and to a scheme for dealing with the annual sum of money available in the hands of the Insurance Commissioners under section 16 (2) of the National Insurance Act for the purposes of research. At the same time the Committee do not wish to be understood to mean that the question of treatment can be wholly divorced from that of prevention. It is desirable to State 'di 01108 that, in their opinion, the two questions are very closely interrelated. Effective treatment leads to prevention and effective prevention leads to diminished need for treatment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State of Vermont: Eighth Annual Report of the Vermont Agricultural Experiment Station, 1894 It has been the custom at this Station to reprint abstracts of bulletins issued during the year in the annual report, in order that their essential features might be put in more permanent form. In some cases the abstracts have been very brief, in others they have been practically reprints. Bulletin 42 on Bovine Tuberculosis was printed in a larger edition than any previ ous one except N o. 26 on Maple Supr, yet it is nearly out of print. This fact, together with the importance of the, subject, and the prominence which the disease has assumed in the public notice within the past year, prompts us to reprint the bulletin entire in this report. The Station Veterinarian has made considerable further use of tuberculin as a diagnostic since the bulletin was issued, the total number of injections made by him (at date of writing) exceeding twenty-four hundred. The more recent data regarding its use in this State and a further discussion of the disease will be found on the pages following the reprint. It should be noted that Act N o. 102 of the Laws of 1894 printed below, provides for indemnity for cattle condemned and found tuberculous, and that the circular of the Cattle Commissioners (pp. 66-68) is no longer in force, also that the laws of Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania and perhaps other States as well as our own on this subject have been changed since the data given on pages 64-65 was compiled.
