Book Orangeism in Ireland and Britain

Download or read book Orangeism in Ireland and Britain written by Hereward Senior and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Orange Lodges, originally a powerful agency for the defence of loyalist and protestant interest in Ireland, have flourished as fraternal societies in the British Army in nearly every part of the English-speaking world. Although founded by Irish protestant peasants, they soon attracted sections of the upper and middle classes who, at time, found Orangemen useful politically, but embarrassing and difficult to control. This study, originally published in 1966, deals with the founding of the movement in County Armagh just prior to the rebellion of 1798, and traces its history through the first forty years of its existence.

Book Ireland and the British Empire

Download or read book Ireland and the British Empire written by Kevin Kenny and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-05-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Irish history was determined by the rise, expansion, and decline of the British Empire. British imperial history, from the age of Atlantic expansion to the age of decolonization, was moulded in part by Irish experience. But the nature of Ireland's position in the Empire has always been a matter of contentious dispute. Was Ireland a sister kingdom and equal partner in a larger British state? Or was it, because of its proximity and strategic importance, the Empire's most subjugated colony? Contemporaries disagreed strongly on these questions, and historians continue to do so. Questions of this sort can only be answered historically: Ireland's relationship with Britain and the Empire developed and changed over time, as did the Empire itself. This book offers the first comprehensive history of the subject from the early modern era through to the contemporary period. The contributors seek to specify the nature of Ireland's entanglement with empire over time: from the conquest and colonization of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, through the consolidation of Ascendancy rule in the eighteenth, the Act of Union in the period 1801-1921, the emergence of an Irish Free State and Republic, and eventual withdrawal from the British Commonwealth in 1948. They also consider the participation of Irish people in the Empire overseas, as soldiers, administrators, merchants, migrants, and missionaries; the influence of Irish social, administrative, and constitutional precedents in other colonies; and the impact of Irish nationalism and independence on the Empire at large. The result is a new interpretation of Irish history in its wider imperial context which is also filled with insights on the origins, expansion, and decline of the British Empire.

Download or read book The Pamphlet Debate on the Union Between Great Britain and Ireland 1797 1800 written by W. J. McCormack and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguments about the Irish Union provided an unprecedented opportunity for the exploitation of the print medium in shaping public opinion. Pamphlets became the principal weapons in a struggle for ideological advantage. Parliamentary speeches, satirical poems, earnest exhortations, even an account of the millenium, streamed from the booksellers. But, as this study shows, the conflict raged well beyond the environs of Dublin's parliament, involving provincial and metropolitan agencies in the three kingdoms. Mc Cormack's annotated finding list brings together details of close on 300 items, and provides call numbers locating copies in the major libraries of the British Isles.

Book excerpt: The first book to examine in detail how British ministers and politicians sought to govern Ireland throughout the period of Anglo-Irish Union (1800-1921), this trenchant and original account argues that British politicians had little understanding or time for Irish matters, and oscillated between policies of coercion and assimilation.
