Book Primary Productivity in the Chesapeake Bay During the Summer of 1964

Download or read book Primary Productivity in the Chesapeake Bay During the Summer of 1964 written by W. Rowland Taylor and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primary production by the phytoplankton of the upper Chesapeake Bay averaged about 1.5 to 3.5 Cm-2 day Cm-1 during the summer of 1964. Production in the tributaries was generally less than the open bay. This level of primary productivity is about the same as has been noted for other estuaries during summer months. On an annual basis, the production would be higher since the spring bloom phenomenon was not included in these measurements. The technique was evaluated by a series of rate measurements and a precision estimate. The precision of the method was estimated at about 20%. An endogenous physiological diurnal rhythm was noted but variations in photosynthetic capacity during the time of day that measurements were made was only about 25%. The ecological significance of these observations is discussed. (Author).

Book Oxygen Dynamics in the Chesapeake Bay

Download or read book Oxygen Dynamics in the Chesapeake Bay written by David E. Smith and published by Schiffer Publishing. This book was released on 1992 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the processes that create and sustain anoxia (the absence of oxygen) and hypoxia (the near absence of oxygen) in bottom waters of the Chesapeake Bay. The authors of the book's four chapters discuss major findings and summarize the gradually developing consensus on the implications of these findings for resource management. William C. Boicourt focuses on the physical aspects of Chesapeake Bay in order to distinguish the role and relative importance of circulation processes in the creation of low dissolved oxygen levels. Thomas C. Malone examines the role of water column processes, including the importance and interaction of nutrients, phytoplankton and zooplankton. Robert Jonas discusses the significance of microbial populations, while W. Michael Kemp and Walter R. Boynton discuss the role and importance of benthicpelagic coupling on Chesapeake Bay dissolved oxygen.

Book Improving Estimates of Phytoplankton Populations in the Chesapeake Bay Using Hyperspectral Radiometers

Download or read book Improving Estimates of Phytoplankton Populations in the Chesapeake Bay Using Hyperspectral Radiometers written by Max Spehlmann and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In coastal and estuarine waters, high turbidity and land interference severely diminish the utility of satellite data. This study tested the accuracy of hyperspectral inversion algorithms to better resolve chlorophyll a estimates in the Chesapeake Bay. Hyperspectral instruments measure reflected light with much greater spectral resolution than the multispectral instruments currently deployed on ocean-observing satellites. Increased spectral resolution allows for better approximation of phytoplankton concentrations in optically complex waters. This research seeks to test optical inversion algorithms designed for turbid waters like the Chesapeake Bay. By pairing in situ measurements of chlorophyll with electromagnetic spectrum measurements, we determined the most accurate algorithms for use in the Chesapeake Bay. These algorithms can then be employed in future remote sensing studies to yield accurate chlorophyll measurements in fine temporal, and spatial time scales.
