Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reference Handbook of the Medical Sciences, Vol. 6: Embracing the Entire Range of Scientific and Practical Medicine and Allied Science Prairie itch. This is an affection, or rather a group of affections, met with frequently in the northern and western portions of this country, but seldom seen in the Southern States, which has long been, and still is, a subject of much dispute among practitioners in the re gions first mentioned, as to its nature, cause, and treat ment. The literature of the disease is very meagre, and the views of those who have written concerning the affection are so at variance, that it is impossible to avoid the conclusion that they have seen and described differ ent disorders, which have no other relation to each other than that they are all characterized by the one symptom of itching. The names by which these different forms of pruri tus have been designated, are almost as numerous as the localities in which they have been observed. Among others may be mentioned, prairie digs, Michigan itch, Texas mange, lumberman's itch, swamp itch, Ohio scratches. Whore's itch, army itch, winter itch, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
