This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Record of the Inscriptions on the Tablets and Grave-Stones in the Burial-Grounds of Christ Church, Philadelphia: Compiled and Arranged at the Request of Vestry The property on which the church is built was pur chased in the year 1695, only thirteen years after the city was founded, and when the population numbered about The first church interments were made in this ground, but the population of the city increasing rapidly, it was soon found necessary to secure a lot in the suburbs for a burial-place. Accordingly, in the year 1719, the ground at Fifth and Arch Streets was pur chased, and most of the interments were afterwards made there. Almost all the old families of Philadelphia will find that the remains of some of their ancestors rest in this hallowed ground, as it was for a long time the main repository of the dead in the city. The earliest date, as at present seen on the inscriptions, is 1721, but interments were made there during the year it was Opened, and no stones appear to have been placed over the graves. It is a cause of regret that tablets were not always erected over every grave, as memorials of the departed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-culturalism Roots and Realities Edited by C. James Trotman Examines the place of multiculturalism in our society. The most meaningful support for multiculturalism has come from intellectuals, such as those represented in this book, who have discovered greater meaning about our American past by incorporating the concepts driving multi-culturalism. These essays engage the word and its meanings, as varied as they are, in an effort to add and expand on the dialogue for this ever-increasingly vital concept. However, Multiculturalism: Roots and Realities is not a book aimed at debates; instead, each essay generally makes use of multiculturalism as a way of examining history and social themes, while providing a broader and perhaps a deeper view of 19th-century American life and thought. The book's general goal, which in fact belongs to all of us, is to recognize excellence in the cultures of the historically neglected, claim excellence where it is found, and position it so that it can contribute to a fuller understanding of the human condition. Contributors include Susan Alves, Barbara J. Ballard, Jeannine DeLombard, Juniper Ellis, Joe B. Fulton, Henry Louis Gates, Richard E. Greene, Richard Hardack, Julie Husband, Gillian Johns, Verner D. Mitchell, Christine Palumbo-DeSimone, Janet Shannon, C. James Trotman, Matthew Wilson, and Julie Winch C. Book excerpt: New York Times Editors’ Choice Winner of the Bancroft Prize Winner of the Francis Parkman Prize Winner of the Gotham Book Prize Winner of the New York Society Library's New York City Book Award Journal of the American Revolution Book of the Year Winner of the David J. Langum, Sr. Prize in American Legal History A riveting Revolutionary Era drama of the first published rape trial in American history and its long, shattering aftermath, revealing how much has changed over two centuries—and how much has not On a moonless night in the summer of 1793 a crime was committed in the back room of a New York brothel—the kind of crime that even victims usually kept secret. Instead, seventeen-year-old seamstress Lanah Sawyer did what virtually no one in US history had done before: she charged a gentleman with rape. Her accusation sparked a raw courtroom drama and a relentless struggle for vindication that threatened both Lanah’s and her assailant’s lives. The trial exposed a predatory sexual underworld, sparked riots in the streets, and ignited a vigorous debate about class privilege and sexual double standards. The ongoing conflict attracted the nation’s top lawyers, including Alexander Hamilton, and shaped the development of American law. The crime and its consequences became a kind of parable about the power of seduction and the limits of justice. Eventually, Lanah Sawyer did succeed in holding her assailant accountable—but at a terrible cost to herself. Based on rigorous historical detective work, this book takes us from a chance encounter in the street into the sanctuaries of the city’s elite, the shadows of its brothels, and the despair of its debtors’ prison. The Sewing Girl's Tale shows that if our laws and our culture were changed by a persistent young woman and the power of words two hundred years ago, they can be changed again. Includes photographs
