Download or read book Intermountain Flora Vascular Plants of the Intermountain West U S A Geological and botanical history of the region its plant geography and a glossary The vascular cryptogams and the gymnosperms written by Arthur Cronquist and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The taxonomic treatments for Intermountain Flora were published between 1972 and 2012 in eight parts, volumes 1, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, 4, 5, and 6. Included in this, the ninth part of the series, are miscellany that did not fit conveniently in the volumes with taxonomic treatments. For the past three years, we have informally referred to this volume as the 'Supplement, ' but because of the mixed nature of the contents, we have decided to call it volume 7, 'the potpourri volume.' It contains acknowledgments of individuals and institutions; keys to all families; an alphabetical list of families with volume numbers and authors; a history of the project; biographies of Bobbi Angell, Rupert C. Barneby, Arthur Cronquist, Arthur H. Holmgren, Noel H. Holmgren, Patricia K. Holmgren, Jeanne R. Janish, Bassett Maguire, James L. Reveal, and Arnold (Jerry) Tiehm; photographs of authors, artists, and plant collectors of the Intermountain West; an update to the 1984 treatment of Intermountain Penstemon published in volume 4; a list of general references and online resources; an expanded glossary; a list of nomenclatural innovations, typifications, and chromosome data; an index to people whose photographs appear in Intermountain Flora; and a cumulative index for all seven volumes. The eight earlier volumes include descriptions of 146 vascular plant families (plus three cultivated families [Aquifoliaceae, Thymelaeaceae, and Tropaeolaceae] incidentally mentioned), 898 genera, 3847 species, and 1571 varieties. An additional 426 cultivated species and 551 extralimital taxa are treated in keys and/or discussions. The five largest families are Asteraceae (volume 5), Poaceae (volume 6), Fabaceae (volume 3B), Brassicaceae (volume 2B), and Scrophulariaceae (volume 4). The five largest genera are Astragalus (volume 3B), Eriogonom (volume 2A), Penstemon (volume 4), Carex (volume 6), and Erigeron (volume 5). The four authors (Barneby, Cronquist, Noel and Patricia Holmgren) based at the New York Botanical Garden prepared manuscript for 82% of the 3867 pages in the volumes with taxonomic treatments. In addition, Noel did the page composition and layout of illustrations, and Pat edited the manuscripts and compiled the index. In this volume, Noel designed the photo albums and prepared the keys to families, the history, the biographies of authors, artists, and Maguire, the Penstemon update, and the glossary, and Pat compiled the list of families and the indices, gathered photographs of the artists, authors, and collectors, and prepared the biography of Tiehm."--Introduction to volume 7.

Download or read book The Geology of Stratigraphic Sequences written by Andrew D. Miall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequence stratigraphy represents a new paradigm in geology. The principal hypothesis is that stratigraphie successions may be subdivided into discrete sequences bounded by widespread unconformities. There are two parts to this hypothesis. First, it suggests that the driving forces which generate sequences and their bounding unconformities also generate predietable three-dimensional stratigraphies. In re cent years stratigraphie research guided by sequence models has brought about fundamental im provements in our understanding of stratigraphie processes and the controls of basin architecture. Sequence models have provided a powerful framework for mapping and numerieal modeling, enabling the science of stratigraphy to advance with rapid strides. This research has demonstrated the importance of a wide range of processes for the generation of cyclie sequences, including eustasy, tectonics, and orbital forcing of climate change. The main objective of this book is to document the sequence record and to discuss our current state of knowledge about sequence-generating processes.
Download or read book Fluvial Depositional Systems written by Andrew Miall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-23 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to complement the author's 1996 book "The geology of fluvial deposits", not to replace it. The book summarizes methods of mapping and interpretation of fluvial depositional systems, with a detailed treatment of the tectonic, climatic and eustatic controls on fluvial depositional processes. It focuses on the preserved, ancient depositional record and emphasizes large-scale (basin-scale) depositional processes. Tectonic and climatic controls of fluvial sedimentation and the effects of base-level change on sequence architecture are discussed. Profusely illustrated and with an extensive reference to the recent literature, this book will be welcomed by the student and professional geologist alike.

Download or read book Stratigraphy A Modern Synthesis written by Andrew D. Miall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2023-03-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The updated textbook is intended to serve as an advanced and detailed treatment of the evolution of the subject of stratigraphy from its disparate beginnings as separate studies of sedimentology, lithostratigraphy, chronostratigraphy, etc., into a modern integrated discipline in which all components are necessary. There is a historical introduction, which now includes information about the timeline of the evolution of the components of modern stratigraphy. The elements of the various components (facies analysis, sequence stratigraphy, mapping methods, chronostratigraphic methods, etc.) are outlined, and a chapter discussing the modern synthesis is included near the end of the book, which closes with a discussion of future research trends in the study of time as preserved in the stratigraphic record.

Download or read book Unfinished Synthesis written by Niles Eldredge and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1985-11-21 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides a stimulating critique of contemporary evolutionary thought, analyzing the Modern Synthesis first developed by Theodosius Dobzhansky, Ernst Mayr, and George Gaylord Simpson. The author argues that although only genes and organisms are taken as historic "individuals" in conventional theory, species, higher taxa, and ecological entities such as populations and communities should also be construed as individuals--an approach that yields the ecological and genealogical hierarchies that interact to produce evolution. This clearly stated, controversial work will provoke much debate among evolutionary biologists, systematists, paleontologists, and ecologists, as well as a wide range of educated lay readers.
