CHAPTER XIV The Nature Of Time The Timelessl In order to understand better the function which time fills in experience, we shall begin by abstracting from time and by regarding reality as a timeless system of truth. Such a world is of course for us as time-subjects a mere hypothetical supposition. All we can do is to abstract from our time-experience as we have it, and conceive it as it would be with time eliminated, given for the time being our distinctions as arisen by virtue of the time-process. Such a world would be a world of abstract dialectic, such indeed as McTaggart conceives the Hegelian world to be; a dialectic silent as the dance of the deaf; a dialectic without movement or variation of attention, for ideal motion, Trendelenburg to the contrary, is a contradiction in terms; a timeless viewing, where all the stages or ideal moments exist for consciousness at once, and have their fixed setting in an ideal scheme, where reality is included and exhausted in one selfcomplete and infinite definition, the Ide, the Absolute. If we have recovered our breath, after speaking such magic and potent words, let us see what place certain categories would have in such a world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Realistic Universe: An Introduction to Metaphysics This volume on metaphysics is the sequel of a volume on the theory of knowledge, entitled "Truth and Reality," which was published in 1911. The two volumes furnish a survey of the field of general philosophy from the point of view of pragmatic realism. This attitude which the author has been championing for several years is an attempt to apply scientific method to philosophic problems. The term pragmatic is used in the sense which was first advocated by C. S. Peirce, and which is defined by the author in his own terms in "Truth and Reality." As applied to metaphysics the pragmatic method means that we must judge the nature of reality, in its various grades and complexities, by the consequences to the realization of human purposes, instead of by a priori assumptions. Some may prefer the older adjectives of "empirical" or "critical"; but these terms seem definitely associated with certain historical doctrines, and a new term seems to be preferable in designating the scientific tendency of to-day. There is need in every age of retranslating the perennial problems of philosophy into terms of living human interest; and the author hopes in a measure to further this movement at the present time through these volumes. In "A Realistic Universe" the author has tried to make vital the fundamental problems of metaphysics in terms of our present thought-world, without the cant of the past, but with a deep sense of indebtedness to the masters of all time. While the book is intended primarily for the philosophic student, the aim has been to make the style as clear and simple as the problems would permit. In the use of scientific material, an effort has been made to find sources which would be intelligible to the layman rather than to make an appearance of erudition. Some portions, such as the introductory chapter and part five on Form, may be of special interest to the general reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Man and the Cosmos: An Introduction to Metaphysics The following work is a systematic consideration of the fundamental problems and concepts of philosophical thought in the light of recent discussion in science and philosophy. The leading motive of the entire work is the problem of Human Personality. I have therefore given the largest amount of space to the treatment of the Self. But, since one cannot consider the place of personality in the universe without being drawn into the fundamental problem of metaphysics, namely, that of the structure of the universe as a whole, I have tried to give just consideration to the latter problem. Moreover, since philosophy is the thinking consideration of fundamental questions, one must settle accounts with the problems of thought and knowledge. I have, therefore, begun with a comprehensive treatment of these problems. My theory of knowledge is realistic, but it differs materially from the standpoints of most of the new realists. I hold that the true antithesis in theories of knowledge is not between realism and idealism, but between realism and mentalism or subjectivism. The great idealistic tradition in metaphysics, from Plato to Hegel, Bradley, and Bosanquet, is not subjectivistic in theory of knowledge. In the main, I sympathize most with this tradition, although I have found it necessary to cricitize the concepts of the Absolute, and the equivocal treatment of Time, Progress, and Personality, in recent representatives of metaphysical idealism. To me the i dominating note of the great idealistic tradition is the ever renewed, attempt to determine, in the light of reason and of the history of culture, the humanistic values of experience and the place of i these in the universe. My conception of the meaning of the universe is dynamic. Therefore the metaphysical standpoint of the following work might be called Dynamic Idealism, in the sense that it aims to find in the living universe a home and scope for humanistic ideals or values. My chief quarrel with pragmatic humanism is that its humanism is too narrow, and that it tends to slight the place of order or reason in man and the universe. Ananthropocentric Purposivism claims that there is a cosmic purpose, but human beings are irrelevant to it. Purpose in the Universe develops a philosophical case for Ananthropocentric Purposivism that it is at least as strong as the case for either theism or atheism. The book borrows traditional theist arguments to defend a cosmic purpose. These include cosmological, teleological, ontological, meta-ethical, and mystical arguments. It then borrows traditional atheist arguments to reject a human-centred purpose. These include arguments based on evil, diversity, and the scale of the universe. Mulgan also highlights connections between morality and metaphysics, arguing that evaluative premises play a crucial and underappreciated role in metaphysical debates about the existence of God, and Ananthropocentric Purposivism mutually supports an austere consequentialist morality based on objective values. He concludes that, by drawing on a range of secular and religious ethical traditions, a non-human-centred cosmic purpose can ground a distinctive human morality. Our moral practices, our view of the moral universe, and our moral theory are all transformed if we shift from the familiar choice between a universe without meaning and a universe where humans matter to the less self-aggrandising thought that, while it is about something, the universe is not about us.

Can physics be understood as providing a 'theory of everything', or do the various sciences make up a hierarchy corresponding to autonomous levels of reality? Is our conscious human perspective on the universe in the universe or at its limits? What, if anything, makes ordinary truths, truths of the special sciences, and truths of mathematics true? And what is it for an assertion or judgment to be 'made true'? In The Universe As We Find It, John Heil offers answers to these questions framed in terms of a comprehensive ontology of substances and properties inspired by Descartes, Locke, their successors, and their latter day exemplars. Substances are simple, lacking parts that are themselves substances. Properties are modes -particular ways particular substances are -and arrangements of propertied substances serve as truthmakers for all the truths that have truthmakers. Heil argues that the deep story about the nature of these truthmakers can only be told by fundamental physics.
