Book Water Quality Modelling for Rivers and Streams

Download or read book Water Quality Modelling for Rivers and Streams written by Marcello Benedini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of the Water Framework Directive in the European countries is to achieve a “good status” of all the water bodies, in the integrated management of river basins. In order to assess the impact of improvement measures, water quality models are necessary. During the previous decades the progress in computer technology and computational methods has supported the development of advanced mathematical models for pollutant transport in rivers and streams. This book is intended to provide the fundamental knowledge needed for a deeper understanding of these models and the development of new ones, which will fulfil future quality requirements in water resources management. This book focuses on the fundamentals of computational techniques required in water quality modelling. Advection, dispersion and concentrated sources or sinks of contaminants lead to the formulation of the fundamental differential equation of pollutant transport. Its integration, according to appropriate initial and boundary conditions and with the knowledge of the velocity field, allows for pollutant behaviour to be assessed in the entire water body. An analytical integration is convenient only in one-dimensional approach with considerable simplification. Integration in the numerical field is useful for taking into account particular aspects of water body and pollutants. To ensure their reliability, the models require accurate calibration and validation, based on proper data, taken from direct measurements. In addition, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis are also of utmost importance. All the above items are discussed in detail in the 21 chapters of the book, which is written in a didactic form for professionals and students.

Book Clinical Chemistry Immunology and Laboratory Quality Control

Download or read book Clinical Chemistry Immunology and Laboratory Quality Control written by Amitava Dasgupta and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All pathology residents must have a good command of clinical chemistry, toxicology, immunology, and laboratory statistics to be successful pathologists, as well as to pass the American Board of Pathology examination. Clinical chemistry, however, is a topic in which many senior medical students and pathology residents face challenges. Clinical Chemistry, Immunology and Laboratory Quality Control meets this challenge head on with a clear and easy-to-read presentation of core topics and detailed case studies that illustrate the application of clinical chemistry knowledge to everyday patient care. This basic primer offers practical examples of how things function in the pathology clinic as well as useful lists, sample questions, and a bullet-point format ideal for quick pre-Board review. While larger textbooks in clinical chemistry provide highly detailed information regarding instrumentation and statistics, this may be too much information for students, residents, and clinicians. This book is designed to educate senior medical students, residents, and fellows, and to "refresh" the knowledge base of practicing clinicians on how tests are performed in their laboratories (i.e., method principles, interferences, and limitations). Takes a practical and easy-to-read approach to understanding clinical chemistry and toxicology Covers all important clinical information found in larger textbooks in a more succinct and easy-to-understand manner Covers essential concepts in instrumentation and statistics in such a way that fellows and clinicians understand the methods without having to become specialists in the field Includes chapters on drug-herb interaction and pharmacogenomics, topics not covered by textbooks in the field of clinical chemistry or laboratory medicine

Book Assessment of Rehabilitative and Quality of Life Issues in Litigation

Download or read book Assessment of Rehabilitative and Quality of Life Issues in Litigation written by Patricia Murphy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-08-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in response to the Supreme Court's landmark Daubert decision regarding provision of expert witness scientific testimony, Assessment of Rehabilitative and Quality of Life Issues in Litigation focuses on quality of life as a means of conceptualizing and measuring pain and suffering in the controversial enjoyment of life debate. The authors make a compelling argument for a quality of life paradigm based on a rehabilitation and health economics analysis, demonstrating that qualified rehabilitationists are the best experts to provide analyses of the impact of disability or injury on quality of life over the lifespan. The extensive literature review enables attorneys and litigation experts to easily access quality of life literature.

Book Water Quality Indices

Download or read book Water Quality Indices written by Tasneem Abbasi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-03-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers water quality indices (WQI) in depth – it describes what purpose they serve, how they are generated, what are their strengths and weaknesses, and how to make the best use of them. It is a concise and unique guide to WQIs for chemists, chemical/environmental engineers and government officials. Whereas it is easy to express the quantity of water, it is very difficult to express its quality because a large number of variables determine the water quality. WQIs seek to resolve the difficulty by translating a set of a large number of variables to a one-digit or a two-digit numeral. They are essential in communicating the status of different water resources in terms of water quality and the impact of various factors on it to policy makers, service personnel, and the lay public. Further they are exceedingly useful in the monitoring and management of water quality. With the importance of water and water quality increasing exponentially, the importance of this topic is also set to increase enormously because only with the use of indices is it possible to assess, express, communicate, and monitor the overall quality of any water source. Provides a concise guide to WQIs: their purpose and generation Compares existing methods and WQIs and outlines strengths and weaknesses Makes recommendations on how the indices should be used and under what circumstances they apply

Download or read book Architecture In Use written by DJM van der Voordt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-06-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book discusses programming, design and building evaluation providing a ‘joined up’ approach to building design. By linking the functional and architectonic qualities of a building, the authors show the practical implications of the utility value of buildings. Starting by looking at how the relationship between form and function has been dealt with by different approaches to architecture from a historical perspective, it goes on to discuss how the desired functional quality and utility value of a building can be expressed in a brief and given a physical form by the architect. Finally, it advises on how to carry out post-occupancy evaluation and provides the architect with methods and techniques for testing whether the intended utility value of a building has been achieved.
