Book Would It Kill You to Stop Doing That

Download or read book Would It Kill You to Stop Doing That written by Henry Alford and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2012-01-03 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We all know bad manners when we see them," NPR and Vanity Fair contributor Henry Alford observes at the beginning of his new book. But what, he asks, do good manners look like in our day and age? When someone answers their cell phone in the middle of dining with you, or runs you off the sidewalk with their doublewide stroller, or you enter a post-apocalyptic public restroom, the long-revered wisdom of Emily Post can seem downright prehistoric. Troubled by the absence of good manners in his day-to-day life-by the people who clip their toenails on the subway or give three-letter replies to one's laboriously crafted missives-Alford embarks on a journey to find out how things might look if people were on their best behavior a tad more often. He travels to Japan (the "Fort Knox Reserve" of good manners) to observe its culture of collective politesse. He interviews etiquette experts both likely (Judith Martin, Tim Gunn) and unlikely (a former prisoner, an army sergeant). He plays a game called Touch the Waiter. And he volunteers himself as a tour guide to foreigners visiting New York City in order to do ground-level reconnaissance on cultural manners divides. Along the way (in typical Alford style) he also finds time to teach Miss Manners how to steal a cab; designates the World's Most Annoying Bride; and tosses his own hat into the ring, volunteering as an online etiquette coach. Ultimately, by tackling the etiquette questions specific to our age-such as Why shouldn't you ask a cab driver where's he's from?, Why is posting baby pictures on Facebook a fraught activity? and What's the problem with "No problem"?-Alford finds a wry and warm way into a subject that has sometimes been seen as pedantic or elitist. And in this way, he looks past the standard "dos" and "don'ts" of good form to present an illuminating, seriously entertaining book about grace and civility, and how we can simply treat each other better.

  • Pages : 146 pages

Download or read book On Manners written by Karen Stohr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many otherwise enlightened people often dismiss etiquette as a trivial subject or—worse yet—as nothing but a disguise for moral hypocrisy or unjust social hierarchies. Such sentiments either mistakenly assume that most manners merely frame the “real issues” of any interpersonal exchange or are the ugly vestiges of outdated, unfair social arrangements. But in On Manners, Karen Stohr turns the tables on these easy prejudices, demonstrating that the scope of manners is much broader than most people realize and that manners lead directly to the roots of enduring ethical questions. Stohr suggests that though manners are mostly conventional, they are nevertheless authoritative insofar as they are a primary means by which we express moral attitudes and commitments and carry out important moral goals. Drawing primarily on Aristotle and Kant and with references to a wide range of cultural examples—from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice to Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm—the author ultimately concludes that good manners are essential to moral character.

Book A Quest in the Middle East

Download or read book A Quest in the Middle East written by Liora Lukitz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-20 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revered or reviled, Gertrude Bell was a commanding figure: scholar, linguist, archaeologist, traveller and 'orientalist'. A remarkable woman in male-dominated Edwardian society, she shunned convention by eschewing marriage and family for an academic career and the extensive travelling that would lead to her major role in Middle Eastern diplomacy. But her private life war marred by the tragedy, vulnerability and frustration that were key to her quest both for a British dominated Middle East and relief from the torture of her romantic failures. Through her vivid writings, she brought the Arab world alive for countless Britons as she travelled to some of the region's most inhospitable places. She explored the Ottoman Empire during and after World War I when her travels throughout the region and her knowledge of Arabic made her indispensable to British Intelligence. Alongside T.E. Lawrence, she was hugely instrumental in the post-war reconfiguration of the Arab states in the Middle East. In Iraq, in particular, she became a friend and confidant of the new King Faisal, and a prime mover in drawing up the country's boundaries and establishing a constitutional monarchy there, with its parliament, civil service and legal system. She was influential in creating the state which had all the trappings of independence while remaining a virtual British colony. The legacy of her work is still being played out in the conflicts of today. Yet behind Gertrude Bell's public success was a backdrop of personal passions, desires and the relationships that drove this extraordinary woman. Embroiled in an unsuccessful love affair with Charles Doughty-Wylie, a married man, she found peace in the solitude of the desert. But the seemingly intractable problems of the newly independent Iraq led her to write of the 'weariness of it all'. Shortly afterwards she took her own life with a lethal dose of sleeping pills. Using previously unseen sources, including Gertude Bell's own diaries and letters, Liora Lukitz provides a deeper political and personal biography of this influential character. A Quest in the Middle East is a lyrical and illuminating portrait of a woman born ahead of her time, grappling with issues that would shape the future of the Middle East.

Book A Quest for Justice

Download or read book A Quest for Justice written by R. Suwandi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a remarkable study of a contemporary Javanese millenarian community based on a careful and nuanced exposition of the ideas of this community and its leader, Embah Wali, who looked to the coming of the Just King (Ratu Adil) in the person of the Sultan of Yogya. In the Blitar region (East Java), where the community is centred, Embah Wali and his followers created a world in which wayang functioned as the basis for an interpretation of living and being in the world. Adept in linguistic manipulation of the Javanese language, Embah Wali and his disciples created a world of meaning that was unique to their community. The author tells the story of Embah Wali and his followers, describes the phases of their movement and relates these developments to the turbulent social and political events that have occured in Java over more than a half century from the 1930s through the 1980s. This first-hand study of a Javanese messianistic movement contributes to our understanding of Javanese rural culture and politics. As a Javanese from Blitar, Raharjo Suwandi was fortunately positioned to be able able to study and interpret this movement in the midst of its most lively period and then to follow its development to the death of its founder.
