Book excerpt: This evaluation of the Army Continuing Education System (ACES) considered the following programs: (a) Tuition Assistance (TA); (b) Functional Academic Skills Training (FAST; (c) Military Occupational Specialty Improvement Training (MOSIT); (d) Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) Leader Skill Enhancement Courses; and (e) the Armed Forces Classification Test (AFCT). The assessment of the effectiveness of these programs is based on their ability to enhance soldier performance and increase the prospects of promotion, as well as to reduce attrition and increase reenlistment. The evaluation data came from a longitudinal administrative database that tracked a three-year accession cohort over a six-year period and an NCO database including self-reported participation in ACES programs, promotion information, and observed performance ratings. The analysis was designed to separate effects of participant characteristics from the effects of the program, and to control for differences in the opportunity and propensity to participate in ACES. Participation in TA and FAST were associated with an increase in the probability of first term reenlistment FAST participation was also associated with lower first-term attrition. Participation in several ACES programs showed positive effects on measures of performance and promotion potential.

By experiment we refer to that portion of research in which variables are manipulated and their effects upon other variables observed. It is well to distinguish the particular role of this chapter. It is not a chapter on experimental design in the Fisher (1925, 1935) tradition, in which an experimenter having complete mastery can schedule treatments and measurements for optimal statistical efficiency, with complexity of design emerging only from that goal of efficiency. Insofar as the designs discussed in the present chapter become complex, it is because of the intransigency of the environment: because, that is, of the experimenter’s lack of complete control.

Book excerpt: This case study details the methodology of a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design and explores the experiences of a productive cohort research team consisting of six individuals in a counselor education doctoral program. In 2014, the cohort began researching the impact of technology on the process of building cohesion in group counseling experiences for masters level counseling students. The use of technology in counseling is evolving with limited research on the impact technology has on student experiences. We chose a quasi-experimental design to answer the research question. Challenges and opportunities emerged throughout the research process, including learning approaches to dealing with missing data on instruments and the opportunity for validation of the multiple instruments used in the research. This research has implications for including technology in counselor education. The dynamics of working as a cohort research team emerged as an unexpected theme in this research experience. We, as a research team of six, experienced growth and challenges in conducting this study. We found that the ability to function as a collaborative and productive research team had an impact not only on the quality of research but also on the ability to complete tasks in a timely manner and enjoy the research process.

Book excerpt: Since its beginning in 1965 as a part of the War on Poverty, Head Start's goal has been to boost the school readiness of low-income children. Based on a 'whole child' model, the program provides comprehensive services that include pre-school education; medical, dental, and mental health care; nutrition services; and efforts to help parents foster their child's development. Head Start services are designed to be responsive to each child's and family's ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage. The Congressionally-mandated Head Start Impact Study was conducted across 84 nationally representative grantee/delegate agencies. Approximately 5,000 newly entering 3- and 4-year-old children applying for Head Start were randomly assigned to either a Head Start group that had access to Head Start program services or to a non- Head Start group that could enrol in available community non-Head Start services, selected by their parents. Data collection began in fall 2002 and is scheduled to continue through 2006, following children through the spring of their 1st-grade year. The study quantifies the impact of Head Start separately for 3- and 4-year-old children across child cognitive, social-emotional, and health domains as well as ii on parenting practices. This book is essential reading for those in the education field.
