Download or read book A Quantitative Assessment of Aboriginal Involvement in the Canadian Forest Industry written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was also intended to help evaluate trends in the forest sector since the inception of the First Nations Forestry Program in 1996, as well as the release of the Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples the same year. [...] The following are the project's core objectives: 1) To describe the types of Aboriginal involvement in the Canadian forest industry; 2) To describe the trends of Aboriginal involvement in the number and types of initiatives; 3) To evaluate training and mentoring success; and, 4) To assess trends in education and employment levels attained by Aboriginal staff. [...] The next set of tables and figures present a snapshot of training and mentoring of Aboriginal employees and contractors in the forest sector. [...] The number of total employees across all sectors showed the same trend: the higher the level of seniority, the fewer the number of Aboriginal employees - although this is seen across other industries as well for many demographic groups. [...] We have appreciated the opportunity to work on this important initiative with Natural Resources Canada, and we look forward to working with you in the future for the development of First Nations and the forest industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1980s, the Abella Commission on Equality in Employment and the federal Employment Equity Act made Canada a policy leader in addressing systemic discrimination in the workplace. More than twenty-five years later, Employment Equity in Canada assembles a distinguished group of experts to examine the state of employment equity in Canada today. Examining the evidence of nearly thirty years, the contributors – both scholars and practitioners of employment policy – evaluate the history and influence of the Abella Report, the impact of Canada’s employment equity legislation on equality in the workplace, and the future of substantive equality in an environment where the Canadian government is increasingly hostile to intervention in the workplace. They compare Canada’s legal and policy choices to those of the United States and to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and examine ways in which the concept of employment equity might be expanded to embrace other vulnerable communities. Their observations will be essential reading for those seeking to understand the past, present, and future of Canadian employment and equity policy.

Book Sectoral Study Forestry

Download or read book Sectoral Study Forestry written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to identify and assess the relationship of forest industry companies to Aboriginal communities and to identify the actions and attitudes of the forest industry which may contribute to the success or failure of Aboriginal involvement in the forest industry. The focus of the study was on the industry itself, not on provincial policy and regulation makers or Aboriginal communities. With the number of joint ventures and employment agreements between the forest industry and Aboriginal companies and communities increasing, it was hoped that the study would provide Aboriginal communities with some insight into the forest industry's corporate climate and might point the industry to better ways of doing business with Aboriginal peoples"--Intro., p. 4.

Book Aboriginal Peoples and Forest Lands in Canada

Download or read book Aboriginal Peoples and Forest Lands in Canada written by D. B. Tindall and published by University of British Columbia Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aboriginal people in Canada have long struggled to regain control over their traditional forest lands. A history of alienation, marginalization, and social inequality has made this an uphill battle, but the past few decades have seen significant gains in the quest for Aboriginal self-determination. The historic signing of the Nisga'a Treaty in 1998 paved the way for other agreements forged through the BC Treaty process, and Aboriginal participation in resource management is on the rise in both British Columbia and other Canadian provinces. Some Aboriginal communities have started their own forestry companies, and many are starting to benefit more directly from forest resources. Aboriginal Peoples and Forest Lands in Canada brings together the diverse perspectives of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal scholars to address the political, cultural, environmental, and economic implications of forest use. This book discusses the need for professionals working in forestry and conservation to understand the context of Aboriginal participation in resource management, including the history of both co-operation and confrontations such as blockades. It also addresses the importance of considering traditional knowledge and traditional land use and examines the development of co-management initiatives and joint ventures between government, forestry companies, and native communities.D.B. Tindall is Associate Professor with joint-appointments in the Department of Forest Resources Management and the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia. Ronald L. Trosper is Head, American Indian Studies, University of Arizona. Pamela Perreault is a member of Garden River First Nation in Ontario and currently works as an independent consultant for First Nation communities and organizations.
