Book excerpt: Within higher education institutions and research, Women-of-Color’s (WOC) professional experiences have become more visible. Yet, the lived experiences of WOC professional academic advisors working in colleges and universities are missing from the literature. WOC advisors are vital to student success as they are mentors, teachers, guides, cheerleaders, stand-in parental figures, role models, and advocates. As well, they are important because they contribute to serving as a mediator and bridge in higher education conversations around supporting and affirming Students of Color. Perhaps uncovering their stories and learning how they can be better supported will allow them to better thrive in their roles on campus and in higher education. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore and make visible the lives and experiences of WOC advisors, while expanding understandings of WOC experiences within the university as a whole. This phenomenological study, inspired by critical-feminist/womanist epistemologies and intersectionality, consists of semi-structured interviews with nine Women-of-Color professional academic advisors. Results contribute significantly to past research that examines the experiences of WOC in the Ivory tower. As well, the results introduce a more focused look at Advisor of Color experiences within academic advising. More specifically, this study contributes detailed information on Women-of-Color professional academic advisors and their experiences, information that can be used to make recommendations that guide advising and institutional best practices and policy.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the voices, experiences, and factors promoting the leadership career paths of senior-level women of color in higher education and to capture the voices of senior-level women of color on how they were able to overcome the barriers and challenges to breaking the glass ceiling on their leadership career paths to senior-level administration in higher education. A phenomenological research method was employed to capture the participants' voices, experiences, and leadership career paths of their roles in higher education. Results show that the women of color in the study confirmed the perceived challenges and barriers, perceptions of establishing a career path, and factors to overcome barriers and challenges to breaking the glass ceiling. Twelve themes emerged from the 15 participants. Participants in the study were from community colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and predominately White institutions. The interview process consisted of semistructured, open-ended interview questions to capture their voices about their lived career path experiences. Through adversity, these women of color persevered with a single-minded determination to overcome the barriers and challenges faced as a woman of color in higher education.

Book excerpt: Professional advisors are bearing the burdens of a) helping students make a connection to their institution; b) being largely responsible for the efforts to retain these students; and c) providing a multitude of services to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student body. While a great deal of information is available about students, retention, and services, the literature is void of detailed information on the professional advisor and the advisor's work life. The purpose of this study was to learn more about how advisors experience the elements of work life (job satisfaction, relationships with colleagues, commitment to the organization, performance, variety, and autonomy) and, in doing so, illuminate ways in which institutions can create environments in which advisors are encouraged to maximize their potential. Advisors' perceptions and the way they experience their work lives were collected through eighteen one-on-one personal interviews. The interviews were audio-taped and then professionally transcribed for a verbatim transcript. The transcripts were coded into the categories of work life and then sub-coded by emergent themes. In general, the professional advisors interviewed reported they were satisfied with their jobs as advisors, and most particularly with the support and guidance they receive from their colleagues and supervisors, the amount and level of variety in their work responsibilities, and their level of autonomy. These advisors described a strong degree of commitment to quality advising and notably to their students. Most of the frustrations they reported were related to concerns of 'letting the students down.' As a result of this study, recommendations for further research in the area of academic advising include 1) examining the roles, attitudes, and responsibilities of professional versus faculty advisors, 2) investigating the reasons institutions do or do not employ professional advisors, 3) collecting more detailed, preferably qualitative, information on the advisor/student relationship from the student perspective, and 4) addressing the issue of whether advisors would advocate for academic advising to become a profession.

For doctoral students of color attending predominately White institutions (PWIs), additional barriers such as racism, social isolation, and a lack of support may negatively impact their path towards degree completion. For women of color, a group that often experiences multiple oppressions related to race and sex, this task can be more difficult. Unfortunately, research focusing on the unique experiences of women of color enrolled in doctoral programs and the strategies they use to navigate their programs is scant. The purpose of this quantitative study is to explore the relationship between hope, perceptions of campus connectedness, perceptions of institutional racial climate, and coping strategies used by women of color in Counselor Education doctoral programs at PWIs. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the study, including relevant background information, a rationale for the study, and an overview of the key components of dissertation research. Chapter 2 is comprised of a comprehensive review of the literature. This chapter will first describe literature related to doctoral education, present doctoral enrollment and graduation rates, and provide findings related to the experiences of women, students of color at PWIs, and women of color in graduate programs. Then, literature related to the experiences of students of color in mental health graduate programs will be presented. Chapter 3 contains a detailed description of the quantitative methodology used to examine the research questions, chapter 4 contains a detailed description of the results, and Chapter 5 concludes the study with a discussion of the results, implications of the findings, limitations to the study, and recommendations."--Page xv.

Book excerpt: AbstractAlthough research exists on Black women undergraduates and Black women faculty in American higher education, there is scant research on how Black women professional academic advisors for undergraduates are experiencing the academy. One way to learn more about the life experiences of Black women professional academic advisors for undergraduates is through an analysis of their narratives. The purpose of this study was to explore how Black women are perceiving their lived experiences in a public university. This present study also sought to explore how the narratives of Black women professional academic advisors for undergraduates in higher education can be operationalized for student success. The present study consisted of three research questions and they were:1.How are Black women professional academic advisors for undergraduates perceiving their lived experiences in the academy of a public university? 2.How do Black women professional academic advisors for undergraduates find value in their lived experiences?3.How are Black women professional academic advisors for undergraduates relaying their stories to other Black women in academia?This present study used Black feminist theory and narrative inquiry as a methodology to analyze the data gleaned from interviewing three Black women professional academic advisors for undergraduates at a public, four-year university in the southeastern region of the United States of America (U.S.). The major findings revealed that academic advisors for undergraduates need support from their university and from the colleges and departments for which they work. The findings show that the various knowledges of Black women academic advisors for undergraduates are devalued. The findings show that the participants are affected by the treatment of Black Americans. Additionally, the findings indicated that the participants do engage in self-valuation through work. Finally, the findings revealed that the participants bring their biases and worldviews to work to help others. Implications for practice show that universities should consider hiring more undergraduate advising staff to allow professional academic advisors for undergraduates the time to practice in their academic philosophies.Keywords: Black women professionals, Black feminist theory, undergraduate academic advisors, narrative inquiry, critical advising, feminist pedagogy, higher education, student success.

Existing research points toward greater study of Black American females; however, for some the call for equity and change in the societal perceptions of Black women has largely gone unanswered. For others, emerging research had started to change the perception of Black American women. Current counseling literature is limited in the exploration of gender identity development from a Black woman' s perspective. This study fills a gap in the literature concerning gender identity development for Black American females by exploring the phenomenon of womanhood and how Black American women have come to view themselves as women. The study is comprised of two main parts: Individual interviews with Black women, followed later by focus groups of counselor educators/counselors who discussed the implications of the interview findings. All participant resided in an upper Midwestern state. Ten Black American females ages 35 and over engaged in two separate interviews that explored their views of womanhood, how they came to see themselves as women, and their perspectives on contemporary Black women. Phenomenological qualitative methods were used to analyze the interview data. The emergence of a womanhood identity occurred through motherhood, other lifecycle transitions, maternal family influences, and by cultivating wisdom through life experiences and formal education. Qualities associated with womanhood included responsibility, independence, self-sacrifice, overcoming challenges and resilience, spirituality and faith, and sexuality. Contemporary views of Black women were influenced by societal messages that both uplift and weigh down, and participants were inspired by the presence of Michelle Obama as the nation's first lady. A total of six focus group participants addressed the implications fo the findings for counseling and counselor education. Several themes that were relevant to both counselor training and counseling practice included: multicultural competence, viewing Black women in multiple dimensions of context, shifting from a deficit to strengths focus, effective use of counseling theory, understanding Black struggle and rethinking resilience, religious and spiritual resources, and tensions between race and/or gender. Implications for counseling practice and counselor education are discussed, and future research recommendations are made.

Book excerpt: Ph.D. student mothers often face challenges when balancing their academic obligations and family responsibilities. For students with children, there is a correlation between increased family obligations and decreased productivity (Brus, 2006; Maher, Ford, & Thompson, 2004; Lynch, 2008), but academic, social, and financial support can positively impact satisfaction and progress in the Ph.D. program. Faculty advisors play a crucial role in the Ph.D. experience and can positively or negatively impact a student0́9s experience and productivity. The purpose of this study was to explore the academic advising and mentoring experiences of female Ph.D. students with children. This qualitative study included ten participants from social science, science, and engineering degrees. Information was gathered through semi-structured interviews with female Ph.D. students with children ages ten and under. Questions explored the expectations students had of their faculty advisors, what academic advising and mentoring behaviors assisted students0́9 ability to balance family and academia, and what academic advising and mentoring behaviors hindered students0́9 ability to balance family and academia. Tronto0́9s (1993) elements of an ethic of care guided emergent themes from the data analysis. The study results indicated that students0́9 expectations of their advisors change as they progress through the Ph.D. program. Expectations focused on financial support, communication, professional development, and recognition that students also have personal lives and responsibilities. Advising factors that impacted student experiences included advisor fit, role conflict, and department culture. Interview responses indicated that the majority of student participants were satisfied with their advising relationship, but a few respondents did experience harmful behaviors. Students who were satisfied with their mentoring experience were more likely to have advisors that displayed all of Tronto0́9s (1993) elements of an ethic of care. The study concluded that faculty advisors play a significant role in Ph.D. student socialization, how students experience their Ph.D. program, and a student0́9s academic and professional success. The data provided insight to the positive and negative impacts faculty advisors may have on the experiences of female Ph.D. students with children.

Book excerpt: Demand for tech professionals is expected to increase substantially over the next decade, and increasing the number of women of color in tech will be critical to building and maintaining a competitive workforce. Despite years of efforts to increase the diversity of the tech workforce, women of color have remained underrepresented, and the numbers of some groups of women of color have even declined. Even in cases where some groups of women of color may have higher levels of representation, data show that they still face significant systemic challenges in advancing to positions of leadership. Research evidence suggests that structural and social barriers in tech education, the tech workforce, and in venture capital investment disproportionately and negatively affect women of color. Transforming Trajectories for Women of Color in Tech uses current research as well as information obtained through four public information-gathering workshops to provide recommendations to a broad set of stakeholders within the tech ecosystem for increasing recruitment, retention, and advancement of women of color. This report identifies gaps in existing research that obscure the nature of challenges faced by women of color in tech, addresses systemic issues that negatively affect outcomes for women of color in tech, and provides guidance for transforming existing systems and implementing evidence-based policies and practices to increase the success of women of color in tech.
