Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to develop a consensus from a panel of experts composed of public school music teachers both based in instrumental methods and/or choral methods, higher education music professors from various backgrounds, public school administrators, philanthropists, authors, researchers, state music supervisors, and leaders in professional music organizations on regional and national levels. Through the use of the panel of experts from geographical regions across the United States and Canada, this study strove to build strategies that addressed the effects of reducing funding for music education. The vehicle used to build consensus was the Delphi Technique. Through this Delphi study, the 35 panelists suggested, refined, and prioritized strategies that could address music education funding issues. The Delphi panel members were asked to respond to 14 open-ended questions in the Round 1 questionnaire. During the Round 2 questionnaire, panelists were encouraged to make further recommendations or offer remarks to clarify the already presented strategies, which resulted in a final compilation of 12 questions with 67 subparts. The Round 3 questionnaire was divided into two sections. Section 1 asked panel members to rate the predetermined strategies on a Likert-type scale and Section 2 asked panel members to rank the same strategies in order of importance. The consensus of strategies by the Delphi panel members may be used to address funding issues on local, state, and national levels. The strategies listed in this study agreed upon by the panel of experts could be transferred into a mass produced handout or pamphlet and distributed to governmental leaders, conference attendees, or published in music education textbooks to educate future music teachers on methods that can be used to combat ever pressing funding issues, which continually threaten the elimination and/or reduction of educationally based and publicly supported music programs.

Book excerpt: This volume of Advances in Music Education Research with the idea of research as “situated inquiry.” We intend this metaphor to stand for a general description of the contextualized processes music education researchers use to frame, generate, augment and refine knowledge. The works in this volume illustrate the many ways in which knowledge has been constructed out of multiple approaches to studying an idea or exploring questions. All seek to expand our knowledge of music education in some form. How we go about engaging in knowledge construction, and what we learn from the different processes involved, is a function of the activities, contexts, and cultures in which our work is “situated.” Both knowledge and action is “located,” that is, research is placed, positioned or embedded (Lave & Wenger, 1990). Each study illustrates these ideas: All are informed by different theoretical frameworks, use different pathways to explore problems of interest and concern, and have something important to say to different constituencies or stakeholders. All, however, are the result of perceived phenomena or human interpretations of a context. Situated inquiry is neither a quantitative nor qualitative approach to research, nor is it a “mixed-methods” approach. Rather, situated inquiry is a function of the beliefs and behaviors of the individuals involved in it. It is also a function (and outcome) of the individuals who seek to join a community of practitioners who practice and engage in research. Although the authors in this volume identify with or have self-selected to employ specific kinds of approaches, they exemplify their communities of practices by the very discourses and structures of their reports. Active perception, however, remains central to their inquiry and to the way they frame, generate, augment and refine knowledge.

Stauffer We live in a “congenial moment for stories” (Pinnegar & Daynes, 2007, p. 30), a time in which narrative has taken up a place in the “landscape” of inquiry in the social sciences. This renewed interest in storying and stories as both process and product (as eld text and research text) of inquiry may be attributed to various methodological and conceptual “turns,” including the linguistic and cultural, that have taken place in the humanities and social sciences over the past decades. The purpose of this book is to explore the “narrative turn” in music education, to - amine the uses of narrative inquiry for music education, and to cultivate ground for narrative inquiry to seed and ourish alongside other methodological approaches in music education. In a discipline whose early research strength was founded on an alignment with thesocialsciences,particularlythepsychometrictradition,oneofthekeychallenges for those embarking on narrative inquiry in music education is to ensure that its use is more than that of a “musical ornament,” an elaboration on the established themes of psychometric inquiry, those of measurement and certainty. We suggest that narrative inquiry is more than a “turn” (as noun), “a melodic embellishment that is played around a given note” (Encarta World English Dictionary, 2007, n. p. ); it is more than elaborationon a position, the adding of extra notes to make a melody more beautiful or interesting.

Book excerpt: This qualitative case study identifies perspectives that have not yet been explored and documented concerning the difference in attention across school levels when it comes to offering professional development opportunities for music teachers. The majority of previous studies have focused on STEM programming, not the arts. In this study, the researcher interviewed six K-12 principals who aided in deciding whether to include music programs to students and professional development opportunities to teachers. Two principals were interviewed in the different K-12 school levels: elementary, middle, and high schools. The results of this study add to the literature and can foster an increase in advocacy to ensure that the arts are included in STEM educational programming and are a part of what schools are doing to better support their music educators. The results of this study will additionally benefit and advance music education by expanding research to include how different school levels promote music education in their curriculum with science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), as well as demonstrating the need for music educators to be supported through professional development opportunities.

Book excerpt: Trauma-informed music education is an emerging research area receiving increased attention among music educators, music teacher educators, and researchers. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to examine one middle school trauma-informed music program. Located in a large urban city of the Northeast region in the United States, Wish Middle School (pseudonym) is an independent Title I school. An educational provider, partner, and resource center for the local community, the school's philosophy centers on trauma-informed education for all students with the mission to serve any middle school-aged student who resides within the school's neighborhood. Data were collected over four months during the 2021-2022 academic school year. Data sources included interviews with current students, teachers, and administrators, classroom observations, and artifacts. Many of the findings from student-, teacher-, and administrator-participant data, align with existing music education research in student-center learning, social-emotional learning, teacher-student relationships, and caring learning environments. To add to extant literature, this study's findings inform a more complete definition of trauma-informed music education, one focused on how music teachers and students interact and co-exist in a music classroom within a trauma-informed school. Music education that is trauma-informed at Wish Middle School requires both students and the music teacher to work together, informing, and responding to each other. I propose a working definition of trauma-informed music education in this study that includes (a) music teachers who develop an affirmative and proactive perspective on student growth through individualized instruction and foster a positive student-teacher relationship; (b) classroom experiences that balance students' self-selected activities and activities that pose encouraging and empowering challenges to students; and (c) curriculum design emphasizing students' preferences and incorporating opportunities for students to connect with each other in a safe learning environment. More research specifically on trauma-informed music education programs is needed to continue addressing the needs of students and teachers. Future research will benefit all music education stakeholders by developing evidence-based studies to better understand and further define a trauma-informed music education framework.
