Book Work and Organizations in Israel

Download or read book Work and Organizations in Israel written by Itzhak Harpaz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the State of Israel was established, its labor force has grown rapidly and has become increasingly diverse in terms of its demographic, cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic characteristics. Israeli work values have shifted towards greater individualism, materialism, careerism, and preference for white-collar and knowledge-based occupations is evident. A major structural change is underway, as indicated by the decline of agriculture as a component in the Israeli economy and the growth of the industrial sector--mostly towards high technology and innovative enterprises. This volume sheds light on trends and developments that have been taking place in the realm of work in Israel in recent years. It contains a unique selection of articles presenting empirical evidence of the major features and important changes characterizing work organizations and the regime of work in Israeli society: labor relations, work values, power and management in organizations, work in the Kibbutz, inter-organizational relations, women and work, migrants and minorities in the Israeli labor force. Studies show that another two major trends characterize the contemporary economy and the labor market: the trend toward privatization and globalization, the results of which are a continuous decrease of job security and an increasing level of unemployed Israeli men and women that are replaced by the low-cost labor of foreign workers emigrating from third world countries. This timely volume is valuable for its contribution to illuminating the recent changes taking place in the realm of work in Israel, and will be of interest to sociologists, social scientists, and students of Judaica.

Book Secondary Breadwinners

Download or read book Secondary Breadwinners written by Vered Kraus and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-05-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive account of women's participation in the Israeli labor force, Kraus's book analyzes the trends in the status of women in paid employment since the 1960s. Covering all aspects of labor force participation, she fully integrates, and tracks over time, the many facets of social stratification by gender in Israeli society. Though founded as an egalitarian society, Kraus's research clearly shows that traditional attitudes toward women in the Israeli workplace have prevailed over those more progressive. Consequently, the widely held impression that the status of women in Israel differs from that of their counterparts in other liberal democratic societies, is shown to be more myth than reality. Though focusing on Israel, comparisons are made with other modern industrial societies, adding to the evidence accumulating on the changing trends in the status of women in the labor force that will interest scholars and students concerned as to how gender intersects with matters of political economy. Furthermore, the unique spectrum of communities in Israel, ranging from traditional Muslim Arab-Palestinians, through Christian Arab-Palestinians and Jews of African American origin, through to the more modernized Jews of European-American origin, enables simultaneous examinations of the various stages of women's integration in the labor force.

Book excerpt: This new generation of country reports has moved on from analysis of labour market trends and challenges to the mapping of existing employment policies and active labour market programmes (ALMPs), including some assessment of the outcomes and effectiveness of these measures in addressing employment challenges. Each report also includes a short description of the socio-economic context in the country, the emergence of new players and actors, and any recent policy changes (government, donors, funding, etc.). The desk review and statistical data analysis are complemented with input provided by stakeholders in government offices, civil society organisations and academia. These included contributions from the Ministry of Economy (Commissioner of Employment and the Training Guidance Division), the Small and Medium Business Agency (SMBA), the Israeli Civil Service, the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), the National Insurance Institute (NII), Histadrut, the Van-Leer Research Institute, Tel-Aviv University, the Hebrew University, and the Micro-Business and Economic Justice Programme. Officials from these bodies were interviewed by the local expert to provide opinions on employment policies. This report reflects the findings of these interviews.

Book Immigration and Labor Market Mobility in Israel 1990 to 2009

This book was released on 2012-09-07 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the labor market integration of highly skilled Soviet immigrants to Israel that formulates dynamic models of job search and human capital investment. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989, Soviet Jews emigrated in large numbers to Israel. Over the next ten years, Israel absorbed approximately 900,000 immigrants from the former Soviet Union, an influx that equaled about twenty percent of the Israeli population. Most of these new immigrants of working age were college-educated and highly skilled. Once in Israel, they were eligible for a generous package of benefits, including housing subsidies, Hebrew language training, and vocational education. This episode provides a natural experiment for testing the consequences of a large immigration inflow of skilled workers. This book provides a detailed analysis of the gradual process of occupational upgrading of immigrants and the associated rise in their wages. Based on their analysis, the authors conclude that even a very large and unanticipated wave of immigration can be integrated within the local labor market without any significant long-term adverse economic effect on natives. The small effect on wages and employment of natives is explained by the capital inflows into Israel and the gradual entry of immigrants into high-skill jobs as they invest in local human capital. An important contribution of the book to the immigration literature is the formulation and estimation of stochastic dynamic models that combine job search with investment in human capital and the analysis of alternative government policies within this framework.
