Book Report A Review of Current Government Programs and Services

Download or read book Report A Review of Current Government Programs and Services written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first report of a committee formed to provide advice regarding the impact of the ageing population on Alberta government services and programs to older Albertans. It begins with a statement of the committee's vision & guiding principles and an overview of the provincial departments, seniors' groups, and other interested parties that made presentations to the committee. Issues discussed and committee recommendations are then presented with regard to the following: the complexity of programs and services, lack of a co-ordinated and comprehensive data base on Alberta seniors, the need for user-friendly information and technology for effective communication, the sufficiency of income for independence, housing policy, co-ordination of health care services, access to appropriate services, promotion of and participation in healthy living, service provider training, program information and delivery that is language- and culturally-sensitive, and the need to prepare for the increasing number of seniors who have disabilities. This is followed by a profile of Alberta seniors, including demographic & population characteristics, income & employment, and health status; a summary of current government programs and services for seniors; and an outline of other provincial initiatives related to seniors. The final section discusses future actions of the committee. The appendix includes additional information on Alberta seniors' demographic & population characteristics and on provincial government programs and services for seniors, as well as a glossary.

Book excerpt: Alberta: A Health System Profile provides the first detailed description of Alberta’s health care system and the underpinning political and social forces that have shaped it. Drawing on significant wealth from government revenues generated through the energy sector, Alberta has been able to develop an extensive public health and health care infrastructure. Alberta has used its financial resources to attract health professionals by offering the highest levels of financial compensation in Canada. However, although it spends more per capita than other Canadian jurisdictions, Alberta’s health care system costs and health outcomes are mediocre compared to those of many other Canadian jurisdictions. This unexpected outcome is the consequence of the unique interplay of economic and political forces within Alberta’s political economy. Through an examination of Alberta’s political and economic history, and using research on the structures and services provided, Alberta: A Health System Profile provides a detailed description of the programs and services that constitute Alberta’s health care system.
