This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Producer-Based Cotton Marketing System The purpose of this study was to suggest directions toward which u.s. Cotton growers might move to remain viable in face of the threat posed by declining Government assistance, rising off-farm costs, and competition from synthetic fibers. The examination of organizational options Open to producers was limited to those within the boundaries of present Government policies and legislation. Efforts were made to determine whether producers could link their operations more directly with those of domestic and foreign mills in ways that would be mutually advantageous and more efficient than present organizational arrangements. Consid eration was given to how the industry, could attain improved order and flow in cotton marketing processes and better price and supply stability. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farmer's Political Economy: "The Dead Horse in Our Spring Branch"; Farmer Dan Luke's Exposure of Cotton Marketing It is the purpose of this book to awaken our people to the needs of a better system of market ing America's greatest crop - cotton - and to urge our government to the necessity of action in giving the needed relief. The results to our farmers as a class is clearly and accurately stated herein. We are making no personal attack on the cotton ex change, but are advocating good and wholesome legislation of a constructive character. Our prem ises are well taken and conclusions are beyond question. The necessity of this book is apparent. The cotton farmer is not represented when it comes to fixing the price his cotton sells for, and after sweating under the present system of fixing the price for thirty years, his nose is still to the grindstone. It is no experiment with him. He has the butt-end of the log to tote and is not rep resented ou the cotton exchange. Dan Luke prays the blessings of the Lord will attend his efforts and asks the prayers of all good Christians. Book Progress Report on Cotton Production Response

Download or read book Progress Report on Cotton Production Response written by Michael J. Brennan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress Report on Cotton Production Response: With Special Application to the Southeast Cotton provides an example. When acreage allotments and marketing quotas on cotton are not in effect, comparative freedom is given to purely economic incentives. What result should be expected? The removal of re strictions during world War II provides a laboratory in which the behavior of cotton farmers under conditions that changed with respect to acreage re strictions (relative to the previous years) and other factors can be observed. A detailed examination of the production of cotton during this period should yield a notable contribution to the knowledge of the relative importance of forces operating in.the product and input markets. Book The Cotton Situation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cotton Situation: July 1966 O.s. Cotton exports are expected to rise sharply during the 1966-67 marketing year (beginning August u.s. Mill consumption is also expected to rise, but only slightly. As a result, total disappearance for the new year is projected at about 15 million bales compared with about 12 million bales during 1965 - 66. Cotton exports during 1966-67 are projected at around 5 million bales, up about 2 million bales from the 3 million estimated for 1965-66. The estimate for 1966-67 is based on anticipated record-high con sumption of cotton in foreign Free - World countries and some rebuilding of cotton Stocks abroad. U.s. Mill consumption of cotton during 1966 - 67 is expected to rise slightly from the 9 million bales estimated for 1965 - 66 to the highest level since 1950-51. Slightly larger consumption for 1966-67 is based on continued strong economic activity, continued large civilian and military purchases of textile pro ducts, and further gains for cotton use in the domestic market because of cotton's improved price position. The high rate of consumption in recent months supports the expectation of slightly higher consumption in 1966 67. As oi July 1, u.s. Acreage planted for the 1966 crop was estimated at acres. This is down 25 percent from the acres planted for the 1965 crop and the smallest acreage in almost 100 years. Grower participation in the 1966-67 program sharply reduced the planted acreage. Producers signed up to remove about million acres from production compared with about 1 million acres in 1965 under the domestic allotment program. Under the 1966 program. Producers could divert up to 35 percent of their farm allotment and many producers chose this option. For all acreage diverted, the rate of payment to producers is cents per pound on the projected yield of the acreage diverted. Book Report on Cotton Production in the United States Vol 1

Download or read book Report on Cotton Production in the United States Vol 1 written by Eugene W. Hilgard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 958 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Cotton Production in the United States, Vol. 1: Also Embracing Agricultural and Physico-Geographical Descriptions of the Several Cotton States and of California; Mississippi Valley and Southwestern States In submitting to the public the series of reports on cotton production the editor deems it not unnecessary to explain briefly the causes leading to their present form, and particularly to the great predominance of the special descriptive over the general part. AS originally outlined by ex-superintendent Walker, the report was to embrace, besides the merely statistical matter, a measurably complete discussion of cotton production, not only in the United States, but elsewhere, and in the past as well as in the present, the results themselves being used to indicate the probable movement in the immediate future. In a word, the figures of the returns should be set into a philosophical discussion of the subject matter to which they relate. In regard to the cotton of the South, the field of actual culture should be defined, and within that field the soils treated of, as far as possible, mapped, the methods of culture discussed, the labor system described, and the American cotton botanically considered and compared as to its adaptations to the uses of the manufacturer with the cotton of other countries. So far as might be, it would be agreeable to the general plan that the discussion should outrun the field of actual present cultivation and take up the question as to the regions of the United States to which the culture might profitably be extended. Historical matter might be introduced to the extent that Should appear desirable. Previous official reports and the literature of the subject could be brought under contribution, though the work should in the main consist of fresh, original matter. Book Studies in the Marketing of Farm Products Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in the Marketing of Farm Products Classic Reprint written by L. D. H. Weld and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Marketing of Farm Products Marketing is a part of production. It has to do with the creation of time, place, and possession utilities, whereas manufacturing has to do with the creation of form utilities. In discussing the problems of production, economists have usually had in mind primarily the manufacturing end, and they have drawn their illustrations Of division of labor, large-scale produc tion, organization of industry, etc., from this field. Likewise agricultural economists have given their attention principally to crop-growing, or as some call it, the production end of agriculture. It is true that some economists have sought to point out the application of general economic principles to mercantile organization, but never in such a way as to throw light on the present system, or to point out its weaknesses. Book The Archaeology of Political Organization

Download or read book The Archaeology of Political Organization written by Barbara L. Stark and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Barbara Stark examines settlement in the coastal plain of lowland Mesoamerica, which was richly endowed with fertile soil and valued tropical resources such as jaguars, cacao, avian species with bright plumage, and cotton. The book provides basic archaeological data about regional settlement from three decades of survey research in south-central Veracruz in the western lower Papaloapan basin, a region with low density urbanism. The data reveals political and social change, with consolidation of wealth by elite families during the Late Classic period. The political analysis considers archaeological evidence related to several organizational principles: collective versus autocratic, corporate versus exclusionary/network, and segmentary (unspecialized versus specialized). Many variables related to these principles used by other scholars are either suited to historically documented states, not archaeological ones, or ambiguous. Many published studies either focus on a particular city or use documents or other evidence drawn from the top of the settlement hierarchy, characterizing the whole society politically from a biased sample. This political analysis is regional in scope and attentive to variation in the settlement hierarchy, providing a guidepost to analysis of political principles with archaeological data.

Book Hindi Cotton in Egypt Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hindi Cotton in Egypt Experiments show that both Of these sources of diversity can be eliminated by a. More careful system of field selection, applied early in the season before the inferior plants have begun to flower, and hence before they have cross-fertilized the neighboring plants. The value of the Arizona Egyptian cotton and the prospects of cultivating this crop on a commercial scale in the United States depend largely on the degree of uniformity that can be attained in the fiber, in com parison with that of the Egyptian product. Hence, the necessity for an inspection of the cotton fields of Egypt in order to determine the extent of diversity in the crop as raised in that country. The high cost of labor in the Southwestern States forbids any direct imitation of Egyptian methods, either in raising the crop or in preparing it for market. Other solutions Of the problems of production have to be sought. The requirement of uniformity has been met in Egypt by a system of careful grading of the cotton after picking that would be very difficult to establish in the United States, and too expensive to leave any assurance of profit for the farmer even if it were established. The Egyptian cotton trade is organized on an entirely different basis from the American. Instead of merely ginning and baling the farmer's cotton as he brings it from the fields, it is the regular practice of the Egyptian ginning establishments to buy the seed cotton from the farmer and prepare it for the market by sorting, grading, and blending. Instead of depending entirely on samples, as with Ameri can cotton, Egyptian cotton is sold largely by the marks or brands that are placed on the bales by the ginning establishments. Cotton of the same mark is supposed to represent a definite uniform quality. This is much more practicable in Egypt than it would be in most parts of the United States because of the much greater uniformity of climate and soil in Egypt. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Textiles have been a highly valued and central part of the politics of human societies across culture divides and over millennia. The economy of textiles provides insight into the fabric of social relations, local and global politics, and diverse ideologies. Textiles are a material element of society that fosters the study of continuities and disjunctions in the economic and social realities of past and present societies. From stick-loom weaving to transnational factories, the production of cloth and its transformation into clothing and other woven goods offers a way to study the linkages between economics and politics. The volume is oriented around a number of themes: textile production, textiles as trade goods, textiles as symbols, textiles in tourism, and textiles in the transnational processes. Textile Economies appeals to a broad range of scholars interested in the intersection of material culture, political economy, and globalization, such as archaeologists, cultural anthropologists, economists, museum curators, and historians.
