Um diesem Ressourcenkonfl ikt und der damit verbundenen Ablenkungswirkung vorzubeugen, ist es wichtig, frühzeitig im Entwicklungsprozess von Zusatzsystemen deren Beanspruchungshöhe zu bestimmen. Dieses Forschungsvorhaben evaluiert ein einfach zu implementierendes Verfahren, das auf das Zweitaufgabenparadigma zurückgreift mit dem Ziel, simultan die visuelle und kognitive Beanspruchung von Zusatzsystemen im Fahrzeug zu erfassen. Verschiedenste Fahrerinformationssysteme zählen mittlerweile zur Grundausstattung vieler Fahrzeuge. In der Auslegung dieser Systeme ist es wichtig, dass die Ausführung der Fahraufgabe durch die Bedienung dieser Systeme nicht sicherheitskritisch beeinträchtigt wird. Dieser Beitrag stellt ein einfaches Messverfahren vor, das es frühzeitig im Entwicklungsprozess von Fahrerinformationssystemen ermöglicht, deren visuelle und kognitive Beanspruchung an den Fahrer abzuschätzen und die Auswirkungen auf das Situationsbewusstsein des Fahrers vorherzusagen.

Equally important, however, is research that has attempted to scale up to the real world this empirical work on attention that has traditionally been well controlled by limited laboratory paradigms and phenomena. These types of basic and theoretically guided applied research on attention have benefited immeasurably from the work of Christopher Wickens. This book honors Wickens' many important contributions to the study of attention by bringing together researchers who examine real-world attentional problems and questions in light of attentional theory. The research fostered by Wickens' contributions will enrich not only our understanding of human performance in complex real-world systems, but also reveal the gaps on our knowledge of basic attentional processes.

This behavior is functional: the reduction of distractions in the environment can improve performance on cognitive tasks, including memory retrieval. Reduction of visual distractions can be operationalized through eye-closure, gaze aversion, or by comparing exposure to simple and complex visual displays, respectively. Reduction of auditory distractions is typically examined by comparing performance under quiet and noisy conditions. Theoretical reasoning regarding this phenomenon draws on various psychological principles, including embodied cognition, cognitive load, and modality-specific interference. Practical applications of the research topic are diverse. For example, the findings could be used to improve performance in forensic settings (e.g., eyewitness testimony), educational settings (e.g., exam performance), occupational settings (e.g., employee productivity), or medical settings (e.g., medical history reporting). This Research Topic welcomes articles from all areas of psychology relating to the reduction of distractions to improve task performance.
