Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Private in the Guards The fortune of war gave me eighteen months in the ranks in the Guards. I have thought I could perform no better service than describe the social life and the spirit in these historic regiments of the British Army. I should explain for those who do not know it, that the Bill Browns are the Grenadiers, the Jocks are Scots Guards, the Taffies are the Welsh Guards, the Micks are the Irish, and the Coalies are the Coldstream. Amongst the rank and file they are only referred to by their nicknames. So also in this book. An intense rivalry reigns amongst these regiments, and comparisons are nowhere more odious. The presence of the young Prince of Wales in the Grenadiers no doubt gave that regiment great prestige, but the Scots Guards yield to none. The record of each and all for the four years of conflict is most remarkable. However, it has not been the war which has been most interesting for me, but the men. We had amongst us a number of those American volunteers, the advance party of America's great manhood, who were feted in London in 1917, and I have used the point of view of these Americans and their adventures together with my own as a touch-stone for our Army institutions and customs. Book excerpt: A revelatory, explosive new analysis of the British military today. Over the first two decades of the twenty-first century, Britain has changed enormously. During this time, the British Army fought two campaigns, in Iraq and Afghanistan, at considerable financial and human cost. Yet neither war achieved its objectives. This book questions why, and provides challenging but necessary answers. Composed of assiduous documentary research, field reportage, and hundreds of interviews with many soldiers and officers who served, as well as the politicians who directed them, the allies who accompanied them, and the family members who loved and -- on occasion -- lost them, it is a strikingly rich, nuanced portrait of one of our pivotal national institutions in a time of great stress. Award-winning journalist Simon Akam, who spent a year in the army when he was 18, returned a decade later to see how the institution had changed. His book examines the relevance of the armed forces today -- their social, economic, political, and cultural role. This is as much a book about Britain, and about the politics of failure, as it is about the military.

Book excerpt: Although service outsourcing has spread throughout Canada’s prisons and jails, into its police, courts, and national security institutions, and along the border in recent decades, the expanding scope and pace of corporate involvement in criminal justice functions has not yet been closely investigated. Changing of the Guards provides a detailed assessment of privatization and private influence across the twenty-first-century Canadian criminal justice system. It illuminates the many consequences of public–private arrangements for law and policy, transparency, accountability, the administration of justice, equity, and the public. This trenchant analysis raises issues that are relevant in Canada and abroad.

Book Private Guards and National Security

Download or read book Private Guards and National Security written by Abusanh Baidu Benedict and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-01-27 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The private guard security sub-sector has been overlooked all this while considering matters of national security. The purpose of this book is to unravel the significance of private security guard companies to national security, also the sector’s critical roles in community policing and economic development; how government can explore its advantages to ensure an effective security network. I believe that this opportunity will enhance intelligence gathering, good communication and prompt response to emergencies. The major security problem Nigeria is facing today is inadequate synergy among security agencies and the public. It appears every security agency operates independently of other sister security agencies. No single security agency has the sole capacity to effectively secure a nation as the situation at present is worrisome. Ideally, no security agency should assume alpha and omega in security matters or see itself as more important than others. This mentality of “I am more important than others” has affected efficient security networks, information sharing, intelligence gathering, crime prevention also responding to emergencies. The immediate solution to Nigeria’s security challenge hinges on the synergism among all stakeholders: security agencies and members of the community.

Book American Prison

Book excerpt: An enraging, necessary look at the private prison system, and a convincing clarion call for prison reform.” —NPR.org New York Times Book Review 10 Best Books of 2018 * One of President Barack Obama’s favorite books of 2018 * Winner of the 2019 J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize * Winner of the Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism * Winner of the 2019 RFK Book and Journalism Award * A New York Times Notable Book A ground-breaking and brave inside reckoning with the nexus of prison and profit in America: in one Louisiana prison and over the course of our country's history. In 2014, Shane Bauer was hired for $9 an hour to work as an entry-level prison guard at a private prison in Winnfield, Louisiana. An award-winning investigative journalist, he used his real name; there was no meaningful background check. Four months later, his employment came to an abrupt end. But he had seen enough, and in short order he wrote an exposé about his experiences that won a National Magazine Award and became the most-read feature in the history of the magazine Mother Jones. Still, there was much more that he needed to say. In American Prison, Bauer weaves a much deeper reckoning with his experiences together with a thoroughly researched history of for-profit prisons in America from their origins in the decades before the Civil War. For, as he soon realized, we can't understand the cruelty of our current system and its place in the larger story of mass incarceration without understanding where it came from. Private prisons became entrenched in the South as part of a systemic effort to keep the African-American labor force in place in the aftermath of slavery, and the echoes of these shameful origins are with us still. The private prison system is deliberately unaccountable to public scrutiny. Private prisons are not incentivized to tend to the health of their inmates, or to feed them well, or to attract and retain a highly-trained prison staff. Though Bauer befriends some of his colleagues and sympathizes with their plight, the chronic dysfunction of their lives only adds to the prison's sense of chaos. To his horror, Bauer finds himself becoming crueler and more aggressive the longer he works in the prison, and he is far from alone. A blistering indictment of the private prison system, and the powerful forces that drive it, American Prison is a necessary human document about the true face of justice in America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of In Cold Blood and The Executioner’s Song, this haunting, insightful, and surprisingly intimate portrait of Saddam Hussein provides “a brief, but powerful, meditation on the meaning of evil and power” (USA TODAY). The “captivating” (Military Times) The Prisoner in His Palace invites us to take a journey with twelve young American soldiers in the summer of 2006. Shortly after being deployed to Iraq, they learn their assignment: guarding Saddam Hussein in the months before his execution. Living alongside, and caring for, their “high value detainee and regularly transporting him to his raucous trial, many of the men begin questioning some of their most basic assumptions—about the judicial process, Saddam’s character, and the morality of modern war. Although the young soldiers’ increasingly intimate conversations with the once-feared dictator never lead them to doubt his responsibility for unspeakable crimes, the men do discover surprising new layers to his psyche that run counter to the media’s portrayal of him. Woven from firsthand accounts provided by many of the American guards, government officials, interrogators, scholars, spies, lawyers, family members, and victims, The Prisoner in His Palace shows two Saddams coexisting in one person: the defiant tyrant who uses torture and murder as tools, and a shrewd but contemplative prisoner who exhibits surprising affection, dignity, and courage in the face of looming death. In this thought-provoking narrative, Saddam, known as the “man without a conscience,” gets many of those around him to examine theirs. “A singular study exhibiting both military duty and human compassion” (Kirkus Reviews), The Prisoner in His Palace grants us “a behind-the-scenes look at history that’s nearly impossible to put down…a mesmerizing glimpse into the final moments of a brutal tyrant’s life” (BookPage).
