Book excerpt: After serving eleven years in the notorious military prison in Diyarbakir, Mehdi Zana was released in 1991 following a conditional amnesty, only to be sentenced again in 1994 to four more years and in 1997 to ten more months of imprisonment for his testimony to the European Parliament Human Rights Sub-committee and for publishing a poetry book, respectively. Mehdi Zana's wife, Leyla Zana - a Noble Peace Prize candidate and winner of Sakharov Prize for Freedom - is one of the six Kurdish deputies in Turkey who were charged with "separatism", stripped of their parliamentary immunity and arrested in March 1994. She is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence in Ankara Prison.

The number of inmates behind the bars has reached historic highs. Hosting convicts much more than their capacities, the prisons, which were already substantially subpar, have fallen way below the minimum acceptable standards for human dignity. Patients in particular bore the most of the brunt of this precipitated deterioration of the prison conditions and the wrath of the Turkish regime against its opponents.

In this official report it is stated that out of 16, 583 British and Indian prisoners "Believed Captured," 3,290 are dead, and 2,222 untraced and almost certainly dead. In November 2015 Can Dündar, editor-in-chief of the national Cumhuriyet newspaper, was arrested on charges of espionage, helping a terrorist organisation, trying to topple the government and revealing state secrets. Arraigned by the President himself who called for Can to receive two life sentences, he was imprisoned in solitary confinement in Turkey's Silivri prison for three months whilst awaiting trial. Dündar's so-called crime was informing the public of the discovery of a highly illegal covert arms shipment by the Turkish secret service to radical Islamist organisations fighting government forces in Syria. This was a crime that was in the government's interest to conceal, and a journalist's duty to expose. We Are Arrested is Dündar's account of the discovery, the weighing up of the pros and cons of publishing, and the events that unfolded after the decision. Dündar and his colleagues faced police barricades, would-be suicide bombers and assassination attempts, as well as fierce attacks from pro-government media. Numbers are bland by nature, yet the numbers in this study have the hue of grief and they represent how heavy the cost of straying from the law can be.
