Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written of late about what the apostle Paul really meant when he spoke of justification by faith, not the works of the law. This short study by Stephen Westerholm carefully examines proposals on the subject by Krister Stendahl, E. P. Sanders, Heikki Raisanen, N. T. Wright, James D. G. Dunn, and Douglas A. Campbell. In doing so, Westerholm notes weaknesses in traditional understandings that have provoked the more recent proposals, but he also points out areas in which the latter fail to do justice to the apostle. Readers of this book will gain not only a better grasp of the ongoing theological debate about justification but also a more nuanced overall understanding of Paul.

Book Justification

  • Publisher : InterVarsity Press
  • Release : 2011-11-10
  • ISBN : 0830869506

Download or read book Justification written by James K. Beilby and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom 5:1). When Paul wrote these words he seemed confident he had made himself clear. But for centuries the Pauline doctrine of justification has been a classic point of interpretation and debate in Christian exegesis and theology. And while in recent decades there have been moments of hopeful convergence among the various traditions of the Western church, the fine print often reveals more facets and distinctions than ever before. This volume focuses on five views of justification and calls on representative proponents to set forth their case and then respond to each other. The five views are: Traditional Reformed (Michael S. Horton) Progressive Reformed (Michael F. Bird) New Perspective (James D. G. Dunn) Deification, or Theosis (Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen) Roman Catholic (Gerald O Collins and Oliver Rafferty) In addition, editors James Beilby, Paul R. Eddy and Steven E. Enderlein provide an extensive introduction to the issues informing this important debate. This distinguished forum of biblical interpreters and theologians offers a lively and informative engagement with the biblical, historical and contemporary understandings of justification. Justification: Five Views is not only a fascinating probe into Paul s meaning, it is also a case book in theological method.

  • Pages : 90 pages

Download or read book Sola Fide written by William Roach and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the time of the Reformation, Protestants have sounded the motto: Justification is by faith alone. Counter-Reformers responded to Protestant theologians claiming sola fide is a legal fiction and foreign to the text of Scripture. Advocates of the New Perspective on Paul have responded to the Protestant doctrine of justification, offering a "fresh" or "new" perspective on Paul's theology, one grounded in the pattern of religion prevalent in Second Temple Judaism. Among their many conclusions is the belief that Augustine and his followers, including the Reformers and present-day evangelicalism, have misunderstood Paul and his letters. The influence of both Roman Catholic and NPP theologians has sounded an alarm for many Protestant theologians and pastors, such as William Roach, an ordained minister and theologian. If Protestant theologians forego the classic doctrine of justification and Roman Catholic or NPP views find a home in the church or seminaries, not only could the doctrine of justification be distorted in this age, but any grasp and assurance of Paul's theology would be lost too. So, Roach is sounding a warning in this primer, which has been written to equip the local church to defend the classic and biblical view of justification.

Book Gospel Allegiance

  • Publisher : Brazos Press
  • Release : 2019-09-17

Download or read book Gospel Allegiance written by Matthew W. Bates and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is faith in Jesus enough for salvation? Perhaps, says Matthew Bates, but we're missing pieces of the gospel. The biblical gospel can never change. Yet our understanding of the gospel must change. The church needs an allegiance shift. Popular pastoral resources on the gospel are causing widespread confusion. Bates shows that the biblical gospel is different, fuller, and more beautiful than we have been led to believe. He explains that saving faith doesn't come through trust in Jesus's death on the cross alone but through allegiance to Christ the king. There is only one true gospel and one required response: allegiance. Bates ignited conversation with his successful and influential book Salvation by Allegiance Alone. Here he goes deeper while making his acclaimed teaching on salvation more accessible and experiential for believers who want to better understand and share the gospel. Gospel Allegiance includes a guide for further conversation, making it ideal for church groups, pastors, leaders, and students.
