Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of German Literature This little volume aims at nothing more ambitious than to give an outline of the growth of German literature; but while it may serve as an introduction to a more in timate acquaintance with the subject, the author hopes that readers who, without the leisure to pursue the study in larger works, may wish to know something of the men and women whose genius has illuminated the intellectual progress of Germany, may find this Primer sufficiently comprehensive to satisfy that desire. The author is gratified to learn from her publishers that a sixth edition of this Primer has been called for, and has sought, by a thorough revision, to make it worthy of continued approval for the object for which it was prepared. Book An Anthology Of German Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Anthology Of German Literature Classic Reprint written by Calvin Thomas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Anthology Of German Literature This book is designed to accompany an introductory study of the his tory of German literature. It is assumed that the history itself will be learned, so far as may be necessary, either from lectures or from some other book devoted to the subject. I have tried to make a good anthology for students who have learned to read the language of Goethe and Schiller with some facility, and would like to know something of the earlier periods, but have not studied, and may not care to study, Old and Middle German. On this account the selections in Part First are given in modern German translations. The original texts are omitted because space was very precious and the book was intended as an aid to literary rather than linguistic study. In making the selections my first principle was to give a good deal of the best rather than a little of everything. I wished to make friends for medieval German poetry, and it seemed to me that this could best be done by showing it in its strength and its beauty. So I have ignored much that might have had a historical or linguistic interest for the scholar, and have steadily applied the criterion of literary worth. Book Selections From Early German Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selections From Early German Literature Classic Reprint written by Klara Hechtenberg Collitz and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Early German Literature While from an ideal point of view it might seem desirable that students of German literature should be acquainted with Old and Middle High German, yet such a plan would, of course, be impracticable for elementary College classes and for High Schools. On the other hand, students of German literature should have an occasion to become acquainted with abstracts, at least, or specimens of the authors discussed by the instructor; and it would appear preferable to have such specimens in Modern German rather than to lay them before the pupils in an English translation, because it is possible in this way to keep nearer to the originals as regards both the form and the spirit. The editor's intention was to make use of such translations only in which the meter of the original is observed. A few exceptions from this rule, however, proved necessary in cases where no suitable translations in the original meter were available (Nos. 42 and 43, 49-51, 61, 70-81). A few specimens of alliterative poetry from Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon have been added, which, though not strictly belonging to Ger-man literature, yet serve to illustrate, and are almost necessary for the understanding of contemporary Old High German and Old Low German poetry. While the order of the selections is chronological, an exception to this rule has been made in case of the younger versions of the story of Hildebrand and Hadubrand (Nos. 5 and 6). Nor did it seem advisable to separate the A.-S. Waldhere Fragments (Nos. 40 and 41) from the Waltharius Manu Fortis. As regards orthography and punctuation, it seemed preferable to adopt the present official rules rather than to preserve the more or less different methods in the various versions. Otherwise these versions have been altered as little as possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German Primer: Introductory to the German Series The German Primer is intended to meet the wants of very young pupils, who now, in many parts of the country, are beginning the study of the German language at too earl y an age to follow a formal method of instruction, such as is pursued in the First Book in German. The plan of the Primer presupposes the presence of the living teacher with the pupil. No rules for pronunciation, grammatical forms, or construction are given; but all the words and sentences are presented in concrete form, without analysis or elucidation. As to the method of using the Primer, the author recommends that the lesson should be read aloud to the class by the teacher, who will then give such explanations as he may deem appropriate to the partie ular class of pupils under instruction. The reading of the lesson by the teacher may then be repeated, until the pupils shall catch the accurate pronunciation of the words and the cadence and intonation of the sentences. The members of the class may then, either singly or in concert, repeat the sentences after the teacher. It would be well also to have the pupils commit to memory and recite in the class the substance or the very words of the lessons. Book Introductory Studies in German Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introductory Studies in German Literature Classic Reprint written by Richard Hochdoerfer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory Studies in German Literature The aim of the volume in hand is to awaken an inter est in German literature, and to serve as a convenient basis for further work in this great subject. An analysis of literary masterpieces with some critical comments, and a short sketch Of the respective authors seemed best fitted to bring about the desired result. The books consulted, histories of literature, bibliographies of authors, and trans lations of their works, are accessible in any well-stocked library, or can be easily procured. If these Introductory Studies in German Literature should induce students to systematically read in English translation the works of German poets, to study their lives in leading biographies, or to peruse more comprehensive works on German litera ture and life, this book has fulfilled its mission. Though presupposing no knowledge of German, the author would like to think of these studies as an incentive to acquire the language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of Germany: From Its Earliest Period to the Present Time, Historically Developed This is effected by a series of biographical notices of th German authors, from the earliest period downward - separated into their respective classes and by a general chronological arrangement, intended to mark the progress of the national mind in each department of letters, and to be used as an aid to reference by the inquiring reader. This volume being, in fact, a commentary upon those Ger man writers, who have figured in the literary history of their country, distinguishes in every instance, those works of an author, which are the most worthy of attention for their artistic worth or moral excellence; and thus presents, at a glance, the principal efforts, whether of imagination or of severer thought, that have won repute or popularity.
