And that which I had been by birth and education, and without my consent or fault, I afterward became from conviction, and -unhappily that spe cies of conviction which is always absolute - satisfied with the potent reasoning, which even to a Nathanael, may some times seem conclusive Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? The question was unfortunately one, which modest worth has always found it difficult to ansv'ver; and I had never met with a Philip of Bethsaida, to say, Come and see. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Presbyterian Church in Georgia It ought to be a matter of thanksgiving to every Christ ian that the religious element was not overlooked in the early planting of the colony of Georgia. The Trustees, many of whom were distinguished clergymen of the Church of England, seemed as solicitous about the spiritual inter ests of the early colonists, as their temporal welfare; as appears from the care manifested in the selection of suit able emigrants, (note the number of Bible's, Prayer Books, and works of a religious nature, included in the first cargo, as well as the number of Missionaries sent out at different times, under their auspices, and at their expense. Book A Manual of the United Presbyterian Church of North America 1751 1887 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of the United Presbyterian Church of North America 1751 1887 Classic Reprint written by James Brown Scouller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the United Presbyterian Church of North America, 1751-1887 Very Christian should be in sympathy with his church, and so imbued with its spirit that he can feel at home in its work and its worship. Then, and only then, can he em joy that restful feeling which springs from confidence and love. But to obtain this he must know its history and its mission, its faith and its spirit, its work and its workers, and become so identified with it in all its parts as to enjoy the pleasures of its memories and of its hopes. The United Presbyterian Church of North America did not head at a single fountain. Several springs united their tiny rills at different times to form its stream. It is the result of several unions, and its antecedents are therefore more numer ous and fragmentary than that of most churches. This has thrown a veil of obscurity over much of its past history, for while one of its constituent parts was alien to the others, they would take but little interest in each other's history and ministry. The time as well as the occasion for such ignor ance is now happily past. Twenty-three years of peaceful union and healthful growth has so unified and consolidated the church that her sons and daughters should feel a kindly family interest in all her ancestral branches. Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old and the New, 1743-1876: The Second Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia; Its Beginning and Increase The mystic seed of truth may be small as a mustard seed, but, like it, will grow into trees in whose branches the birds of heaven may light, or make forests from which cities Shall be built. Cities rise and spread from the Indian's Wig wam or the hunter's cabin. Churches grow from prayer meetings in a private house, or mission schools in a neglected neighborhood. The most powerful organizations have their infancy and growth. The beginning of the Second Church lies far back, and for its real origin we must inquire of the former age, and search among the fathers. The organized church life began in seventeen hundred and forty-three, but the causes which resulted in its organization must be sought still farther away. Book A History of the Brick Presbyterian Church

Download or read book A History of the Brick Presbyterian Church written by Shepherd Knapp and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Brick Presbyterian Church: In the City of New York This history has been prepared, at the request of the trustees of the Brick Church, in the hope that it will interest the large number of people who are bound to the church by ties of the past or of the present, and those, also, whose interest in the history of the Christian Church at large will incline them to an examination of any important chapter of it. The author wishes, especially, that the volume might come into the hands of some of the young men who are about to choose among the various professions for their life-work, for it seems to him that a history like that of the Brick Church sets forth in an emphatic way the great opportunity which the Christian ministry offers in our time. The author has himself been so much impressed, as the facts of the history have unfolded before him, by the variety of interests with which he has been called upon to deal, the breadth of scope which the history has presented, and the close relation which it has disclosed, especially in the record of later years, between the specific work of the minister and some of the problems which most perplex our time and whose solution will most profoundly affect the future of our country and of the world, that he cannot doubt but others will be impressed in the same way. Book History of the Presbyterian Church in the State of Kentucky

Download or read book History of the Presbyterian Church in the State of Kentucky written by Robert Davidson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in the State of Kentucky: With a Preliminary Sketch of the Churches in the Valley of Virginia In 1845, a similar fortunate chance befell the author, in rescuing from the same fate the ms. Letter-book of Lewis Morris, the first Governor of New Jersey; the substance of which was embodied in a Memoir, and read before the New Jersey Historical Society. Esq, &c., the writer is under obligations for various books, pamphlets, and mss., of which he has largely availed himself. But to no individual is he more indebted than the Rev. Robert Stuart; whose full, accurate, and obliging communications are acknowledged with the warmest gratitude. From these sources, and the original records of the various ecclesiastical bodies, the following history has been prepared. In regard to later events, the writer having personally mingled in them, must consent to be held responsible himself for the accuracy of his statements. Truth has been his object; and his aim, to hold an impartial pen. Compelled by the force of evidence to alter some of his own pre-conceived opinions, he asks similar candor on the part of his reader. In consequence of the desire to compress the book into a reasonable size, some things have been of necessity omitted, particularly the statistics of the churches. But as the Rev. Mr. Shane was known to be engaged in the preparation of such statistics, the omission was the more readily made. Download or read book HIST OF THE 1ST ENGLISH PRESBY written by John Backer Kugler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the First English Presbyterian Church in Amwell The writer is aware that from the viewpoint of the stranger this History may seem to be burdened with unimportant statements. Be it so. In reply he begs to say that in its production his aim has been to aid a venerable Mother to tell the Story of her life to her children. True, multitudes of these children have obeyed the Master's call to come home; yet there are others who fondly gather within her doors for worship, while vaster numbers of her children and children's children are scattered and settled in nearly every State of the Union. From these scattered children have come to the writer, again and again, requests for just such unim portant facts (but very important to a child), as are here given. His deep regret is, that many of these requests must ever remain unanswered. Conscious of this, and other deficiencies, yet after long and persistent research, he submits this record of. Those whose memories we fondly cherish, along with this venerable Mother Church for which his affection has increased with years of de voted service, with the desire that 'it may awaken a stronger attachment to this Church of Christ, and a gladness like that of the Psalmist, when they say unto us: Let us go into the house of the Lord. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne During the week of April 22-29, 1956, impressive services marked the dedication of the fifth house of worship of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Wayne. Distinguished guests, clergy, and prominent laymen united to observe the one-hundred-twenty fifth anniversary of the founding of the church in the Summit City. In 1956 the congregation numbered twenty-five hundred members, who had contributed two million dollars to construct the beautiful modified early American edifice at Wayne and Webster streets. The area of Fort Wayne then encompassed twenty-eight square miles, and the population approximated one hundred and fifty thousand inhabitants in forty-six thousand homes. The story of the humble beginnings and the difficult under takings of the founders of the First Presbyterian Church and their successors constitutes a record of faith and courage in this com munity in the nineteenth century. To understand fully the numer ous obstacles and vicissitudes experienced by the Church and its congregation, the reader must turn back the pages of local history to the early decades of the last century. Download or read book A History of the Presbyterian Church Madison N J written by Samuel L. Tuttle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Presbyterian Church, Madison, N. J: A Discourse, Delivered on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 1854 In yielding to the wishes of his respected and esteemed parishioners, in reference to the publication of the following "Historical Discourse," the Author begs leave to state, that, in its original preparation, he had not the most remote conception that any such use would ever be made of it 5 but that his simple and sole object was, the gratification and encouragement of his congregation, on the occasion of its first delivery. It was, at that time, contained within the limits of an ordinary discourse. Since its publication has been suggested, however, it has seemed to him, that, by adding a few facts, and going somewhat more into detail than he did at first, a service might be rendered, at least to the people of his charge, by converting it into a small book of reference for their use. This will account for the greatly increased length of the discourse; and also.for the fact, that so many things have been introduced, which would not have been suitable for the pulpit, and which were riot in it, on the occasion when it was first presented. The Author has no other object in giving up these researches to his people's disposal, than to subserve their interests as a society, and to preserve matters of history pertaining to the pious and self-sacrificing efforts of their ancestors, which he thinks ought not to be lost.
