This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual in Practical Botany Tm; course of botanical study here outlined is intended to give the student a general view of the subject and at the same time to lay a foundation upon which more advanced studies may be built. The outline of classification is to serve as a chart in the practical work in the laboratory. The book is a laboratory manual. The stu dent's first work should be with the practical studies, and these are not necessarily to be taken up in the order in which they occur in the classification. To the writer it seems a good plan to use so much of the classification, morphology, and physiology as are given in these pages as the starting point; to ask the student to read as many of the references given in connection with the various subjects as time per mits, and to require him to embody the results of his reading and practical work in well-considered essays. So pursued, the study of botany provides the means of developing habits of close and accurate observation, of cultivating the reasoning powers, and of teaching the pupil to use clear and correct English, that can scarcely be claimed for any other subject pursued in the schools. Book Laboratory Manual for Applied Botany

Download or read book Laboratory Manual for Applied Botany written by Karen McMahon and published by McGraw-Hill Education. This book was released on 2001-07-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science education is experiencing a revitalization, as it is recognized that science should be accessible to everyone, not just society’s future scientists. One way to make the study of science more substantive to the non-major is to require a laboratory component for all science courses. The subject of applied botany with its emphasis on the practical aspects of plant science, the authors believe, will be appealing to the non-major as it exemplifies how a basic science can be applied to problem solving. Laboratory Manual for Applied Botany will make students realize that the study of plants is relevant to their lives and that they can participate in the discovery process of science. Although the manual includes much of the basic plant anatomy found in standard botany manuals, it differs in taking a practical approach, examining those plants and plant products that have sustained or affected human society.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide for General Botany This laboratory guide is intended for the use of students in their first course in universities and colleges, or other institutions doing work of similar grade. It is not a teacher's manual, and therefore does not include information as to laboratory equipment, the purchase and care of apparatus and materials, nor references to the literature. The author believes that botanical instruc tion in America has now reached a stage where such directions to university instructors are no longer necessary nor appropriate. Book Laboratory Manual to accompany Stern s Introductory Plant Biology

Download or read book Laboratory Manual to accompany Stern s Introductory Plant Biology written by James Bidlack and published by McGraw-Hill Science/Engineering/Math. This book was released on 2007-03-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This laboratory manual assumes no previous knowledge of the biological sciences on the part of the student. It is designed for use in a one-semester or one-quarter introductory course in plant biology and shorter introductory botany courses open to both nonmajors and majors. Both the principles of biology and the scientific method are introduced, using plants as illustrations. The exercises demonstrate the underlying unity of all living organisms at the cellular level. The manual is designed so that students can work more or less independently. Instructors are free to require different drawings or other assignments and may also omit some of those suggested within each exercise. Students are encouraged to read the laboratory exercise before coming to class. Laboratory preparation quizzes are provided at the end of each exercise. Answers to the laboratory preparation quizzes are discernible within the particular exercises and should not require checking other sources. Each exercise includes suggested learning goals and exercise review questions. Answers to the lab manual exercise review questions can be found on the Online Learning Center that accompanies the Eleventh Edition textbook.

Book General Botany Laboratory Manual

Download or read book General Botany Laboratory Manual written by Jerry G. Chmielewski and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-01-21 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laboratory component of General Botany provides you the opportunity to view interrelationships between and among structures, to handle live or preserved material, to become familiar with the many terms we use throughout the course, and to learn how to use a microscope properly. Each of you will have your own microscope every week, no exceptions. This laboratory is fundamental, yet integral to your understanding of General Botany. The images in your manual are intended to serve as a guide while you view permanent or prepared slides. These must be viewed by each of you independently. At no time will questions be answered re where is a particular structure, etc., unless the slide is on the stage of your microscope and in focus. The content of the laboratory is rich, as is the terminology. You must come to lab prepared. You must come to lab knowing what the various terms you are about to deal with mean. There is no such thing as finishing early that simply isn't possible. In some laboratory exercises you will be asked to identify structures of an organism. For example, Examine slide 9 labeled Rhizopus sporangia w.m. and identify the mitosporangia, mitospores, columella, mitosporangiophore, and zygotes. In all likelihood you will only be able to see mitosporangia, mitospores, columella, and mitosporangiophores. If zygotes are absent in your slide you note that the population of hyphae you are examining are only reproducing asexually. These questions are written in this manner to further fortify your understanding of the organisms in question and not to trick you. Thinking about what you are viewing is not an option but a necessity! The phylogeny we have adopted in this course is a composite. No single phylogeny best reflects our collective understanding of all the organisms included in this course so we have created one that reflects modern thought and is based on both morphological and molecular data. None is any more correct or incorrect than is any other, but this is the one that we will use, and the one we deem as most acceptable.Rest assured, much still needs to be learned about the evolution of many of the groups we will study. Regardless, the course does provide you a general overview of the evolutionary biology of these various groups. This is your starting point, it is not the endpoint!
