Book U S Global Defense Posture 1783 2011

Download or read book U S Global Defense Posture 1783 2011 written by Stacie L. Pettyjohn and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debates over the U.S. global defense posture are not new. As policymakers today evaluate the U.S. forward military presence, it is important that they understand how and why the U.S. global posture has changed in the past. Today's posture is under increasing pressure from a number of sources, including budgetary constraints, precision-guided weapons that reduce the survivability of forward bases, and host-nation opposition to a U.S. military presence. This monograph aims to describe the evolution of the U.S. global defense posture from 1783 to the present and to explain how the United States has grown from a relatively weak and insular regional power that was primarily concerned with territorial defense into the preeminent global power, with an expansive system of overseas bases and forward-deployed forces that enable it to conduct expeditionary operations around the globe. This historical overview has important implications for current policy and future efforts to develop an American military strategy, in particular the scope, size, and type of military presence overseas. As new and unpredictable threats emerge, alliance relationships are revised, and resources decline, past efforts at dealing with similar problems yield important lessons for future decisions. The author draws recommendations out of these lessons that touch on the importance of strategic planning; the need to think globally; the desirability of a lighter, more agile footprint overseas; and more.

Book Adaptations to Terrestrial Environments

Download or read book Adaptations to Terrestrial Environments written by N. S. Margaris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains selected papers of the International Symposium on Adaptations to Terrestrial Environment, held in Halki diki, Greece from Sept 26th to Oct 2nd, 1982. The meeting was designed to consider the means as weIl as the mechanisms whereby organisms adapt to their environment. The papers presented dealt with a large variety of species from insects up to and including mamrnals. What became apparent during the course of the meeting was the incredible variety of means that organisms use to survive in their particular environmental niche. The ploys utilized are almost as numerous as the number of species investi gated. This will become clearly apparent in the accompanying manu scripts which are published in this book. The Editors allowed the authors of the accepted papers great leeway in terms of the thorough ness of their contributions. Some of the presentations contain exclusively new findings, whereas others extensively review the existing literature. The Volume is divided into two parts: Invertebrates and Verte brates. The first provides information on adaptations of inverte brat es on environmental stresses (such as low er high temperatures and water deficits) from the physiological and/or biochemical points of view as weIl as behavioral responses resulting from their life strategies and interactions with other organisrns. In the second part papers selected deal with vertebrates. Adaptations to special environmental factors such as light and temperature are discussed as weIl as behavioral, physiological and biochemical solutions to problems imposed.

Book The 12 Stages of Healing

Download or read book The 12 Stages of Healing written by Donald M. Epstein and published by Amber-Allen Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 12 Stages of Healing is an extraordinary new approach to healing the mind and body. Dr. Epstein, founder and creator of Network Spinal, offers fascinating insights into the complex relationship between mind, emotions, and body, and shows us how to promote greater health in our bodies and harmony in our relationships. Have you, or someone you love, experienced . . . · A recurring sickness, healing crisis, or life-threatening illness? · A feeling of emptiness and longing for no apparent reason? · A major trauma, emotional hardship, or life-changing event? · A feeling of being stuck in a pattern of self-destructive behavior? After observing thousands of people in both private practice and public seminars, Dr. Epstein discovered 12 basic rhythms, or stages of consciousness, shared by all humanity. Each stage of healing has a distinct “rite of passage” that helps us to reunite with aspects of ourselves that are traumatized, alienated, forgotten, abused, shamed, or unforgiven. Each stage also has a characteristic pattern of breath, movement, and touch that can help us to reconnect with the natural, internal rhythms of our body, and experience a greater sense of joy and well-being. “Donald Epstein is an extraordinary healer. In my 25 years of traveling the globe, I’ve never seen anyone who is able to produce the impact he does in such a short period of time. He opens our hearts to new possibilities for individuals and humanity.” — Tony Robbins, Peak Performance Coach and best-selling author of Unlimited Power

Book Elements of Defense for a New Age

Download or read book Elements of Defense for a New Age written by Justin Rawson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy puts everyone on equal standing. No particular person defends another person in a world of democracy. There is no warrior caste or system of knights. No one is stronger than the other. What does this say for defending oneself from violence? The weak are exposed in a world of democratic countries with no one in particular to protect them. The situation argues new things for the study of nonviolence. A whole new system of thought for martial arts is necessary today. The solution is an entirely new thing.
