Book A Posteriori Error Estimation Techniques for Finite Element Methods

Download or read book A Posteriori Error Estimation Techniques for Finite Element Methods written by Rüdiger Verfürth and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-adaptive discretization methods are now an indispensable tool for the numerical solution of partial differential equations that arise from physical and technical applications. The aim is to obtain a numerical solution within a prescribed tolerance using a minimal amount of work. The main tools in achieving this goal are a posteriori error estimates which give global and local information on the error of the numerical solution and which can easily be computed from the given numerical solution and the data of the differential equation. This book reviews the most frequently used a posteriori error estimation techniques and applies them to a broad class of linear and nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations. Although there are various approaches to adaptivity and a posteriori error estimation, they are all based on a few common principles. The main aim of the book is to elaborate these basic principles and to give guidelines for developing adaptive schemes for new problems. Chapters 1 and 2 are quite elementary and present various error indicators and their use for mesh adaptation in the framework of a simple model problem. The basic principles are introduced using a minimal amount of notations and techniques providing a complete overview for the non-specialist. Chapters 4-6 on the other hand are more advanced and present a posteriori error estimates within a general framework using the technical tools collected in Chapter 3. Most sections close with a bibliographical remark which indicates the historical development and hints at further results.

Book Finite Volumes for Complex Applications VI Problems Perspectives

Download or read book Finite Volumes for Complex Applications VI Problems Perspectives written by Jaroslav Fořt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-21 with total page 1003 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finite volume methods are used for various applications in fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, structural analysis or nuclear physics. A closer look reveals many interesting phenomena and mathematical or numerical difficulties, such as true error analysis and adaptivity, modelling of multi-phase phenomena or fitting problems, stiff terms in convection/diffusion equations and sources. To overcome existing problems and to find solution methods for future applications requires many efforts and always new developments. The goal of The International Symposium on Finite Volumes for Complex Applications VI is to bring together mathematicians, physicists and engineers dealing with Finite Volume Techniques in a wide context. This book, divided in two volumes, brings a critical look at the subject (new ideas, limits or drawbacks of methods, theoretical as well as applied topics).

Book A Posteriori Error Estimates for Finite Volume Approximations of Elliptic Equations on General Surfaces

Download or read book A Posteriori Error Estimates for Finite Volume Approximations of Elliptic Equations on General Surfaces written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we present a residual-based a posteriori error estimate for the finite volume discretization of steady convection- diffusion-reaction equations defined on surfaces in R3, which are often implicitly represented as level sets of smooth functions. Reliability and efficiency of the proposed a posteriori error estimator are rigorously proved. Numerical experiments are also conducted to verify the theoretical results and demonstrate the robustness of the error estimator.

The idea of the text is to explain the important ideas to the reader, while giving enough detail and pointers to literature to facilitate implementation of methods and application of concepts. The book covers high order methods in space, such as Discontinuous Galerkin methods, and high order methods in time, in particular implicit ones. A large part of the text is reserved to discuss iterative methods for the arising large nonlinear and linear equation systems. Ample space is given to both state-of-the-art multigrid and preconditioned Newton-Krylov schemes. Features Applications to aerospace, high-speed vehicles, heat transfer, and more besides Suitable as a textbook for graduate-level courses in CFD, or as a reference for practitioners in the field

Book A Posteriori Error Analysis Via Duality Theory

Download or read book A Posteriori Error Analysis Via Duality Theory written by Weimin Han and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-07-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a posteriori error analysis for mathematical idealizations in modeling boundary value problems, especially those arising in mechanical applications, and for numerical approximations of numerous nonlinear var- tional problems. An error estimate is called a posteriori if the computed solution is used in assessing its accuracy. A posteriori error estimation is central to m- suring, controlling and minimizing errors in modeling and numerical appr- imations. In this book, the main mathematical tool for the developments of a posteriori error estimates is the duality theory of convex analysis, documented in the well-known book by Ekeland and Temam ([49]). The duality theory has been found useful in mathematical programming, mechanics, numerical analysis, etc. The book is divided into six chapters. The first chapter reviews some basic notions and results from functional analysis, boundary value problems, elliptic variational inequalities, and finite element approximations. The most relevant part of the duality theory and convex analysis is briefly reviewed in Chapter 2.

Book Trends in Nonlinear Analysis

Download or read book Trends in Nonlinear Analysis written by Markus Kirkilionis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-11-27 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied mathematics is a central connecting link between scientific observations and their theoretical interpretation. Nonlinear analysis has surely contributed major developments which nowadays shape the face of applied mathematics. At the beginning of the millennium, all sciences are expanding at increased speed. Technological, ecological, economical and medical problem solving is a central issue of every modern society. Mathematical models help to expose fundamental structures hidden in these problems and serve as unifying tools to deepen our understanding. What are the new challenges applied mathematics has to face with the increased diversity of scientific problems? In which direction should the classical tools of nonlinear analysis be developed further? How do new available technologies influence the development of the field? How can problems be solved which have been beyond reach in former times? It is the aim of this book to explore new developments in the field by way of discussion of selected topics from nonlinear analysis.

Book Numerical Methods for Singularly Perturbed Differential Equations

Download or read book Numerical Methods for Singularly Perturbed Differential Equations written by Hans-Görg Roos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of singular perturbed differential equations began early in this century, when approximate solutions were constructed from asymptotic ex pansions. (Preliminary attempts appear in the nineteenth century [vD94].) This technique has flourished since the mid-1960s. Its principal ideas and methods are described in several textbooks. Nevertheless, asymptotic ex pansions may be impossible to construct or may fail to simplify the given problem; then numerical approximations are often the only option. The systematic study of numerical methods for singular perturbation problems started somewhat later - in the 1970s. While the research frontier has been steadily pushed back, the exposition of new developments in the analysis of numerical methods has been neglected. Perhaps the only example of a textbook that concentrates on this analysis is [DMS80], which collects various results for ordinary differential equations, but many methods and techniques that are relevant today (especially for partial differential equa tions) were developed after 1980.Thus contemporary researchers must comb the literature to acquaint themselves with earlier work. Our purposes in writing this introductory book are twofold. First, we aim to present a structured account of recent ideas in the numerical analysis of singularly perturbed differential equations. Second, this important area has many open problems and we hope that our book will stimulate further investigations. Our choice of topics is inevitably personal and reflects our own main interests.
