Book A Popular Introduction to the Study and Practice of Chess by an Amateur S S Boden

This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1851 edition. Excerpt: ... from the generality of his fellow-men, he attributed the distinction to unwearied diligence and perseverance." How encouraging such remarks to the plain, plodding investigator of science, and what a contrast to the fulsome boastings of a certain French chess-player of the last age, and the ridiculous laudations of certain of his admirers! Empiricism always precedes theory, but the result of a due recognition of principles will be the induction of laws, and their substitution for the uncertain rides of experience. Many and just are the complaints of the insufficiency of the directions for the practice of chess. Tis true we are conducted through certain openings and pointed to a variety of paths, but, being left to make our own selection, it is not surprising that we should often find ourselves pursuing a devious course, and at best only brought back to the point whence we started, like bewildered travellers in their gyrations through a fog without compass, to commence our journey anew. Contrast the possibilities, probabilities, conditions, and uncertainties of empiricism with the truthfulness and universal applicability of science. Read over the exceedingly vague maxims, and often impracticable rules of experience, and consider the exactness of the indications for the fulfilment of a known law. Imagine, if you can, the possession of what you are told are requisite qualities-- courage and self-possession, without a knowledge of the foundation on which they should rest. Contrast the difficulty and doubt attending the mentally performed experiment, as we are further told is sometimes necessary, of twenty or more moves, with the confidence inspired by a knowledge of the certain power, unerring tendency, and ultimate triumph of principle....

Download or read book Bullet Chess written by Hikaru Nakamura and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2011-08-08 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chess in the Fast Lane! Can anyone play a decent game of chess in one minute? Surprisingly, the answer is "Yes" as this unique book reveals. "Bullet” chess, where each player has one minute for the entire game, has attracted thousands of followers since it was popularized on the internet a decade ago. In this book the authors discuss the relationship between the position on the board and time on the clock, the techniques and dangers of "pre-moving,” bullet openings, the importance of the initiative and consistent strategy, and how endings are different in bullet chess. The authors also explore the psychology of bullet chess and the most common causes of tactical oversights and blunders. The many examples illustrate the principles of bullet chess and how they may even apply to blitz chess and time scrambles in standard chess. Most of all, bullet chess is shown to be entertaining and addictive, and not at all as random as it first appears.

Book Chess Openings Theory and Practice

Download or read book Chess Openings Theory and Practice written by I. A. Horowitz and published by Ishi Press. This book was released on 2015-06-07 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Speaking for myself and for players of my strength, Chess Openings: Theory and Practice is the greatest aid I have ever seen for preparing for a tournament. Speaking for all other players, the book is a "must." Current thinking on all important lines is meticulously presented, offering myriad, clear-cut ideas a completely new and effective arsenal of weapons. "-Samuel Reshevsky, United States Open Champion." Chess Openings Theory and Practice is a remarkable book, unequaled by any book of that era or since. It is not a mere openings book with long columns of moves followed at the end by punctuation marks such as + -- or =. It presents opening ideas and games, often including the first game where each opening was played, plus the history of the opening, the names of famous players who played this opening and the ideas and plans on which the opening is based. It provides "idea variations." These are variations that may not actually occur in actual practice, but are what you would play if given the chance. No other book does that, at least not in English and not to this extent.

Book Collection of Chess Studies by Troitzky

Download or read book Collection of Chess Studies by Troitzky written by Alexey Alexeyevich Troitzky and published by . This book was released on 2006-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexey Alexeyevich Troitzky (1866-1942) is considered to have been the greatest composer of chess endgame studies ever. To call him a genius is to trivialize his accomplishments, because there are many geniuses, but few can equal the output of Troitzky. In his lifetime, Troitzky composed more than one thousand chess endgame studies. Nobody really knows how many. In this work, published in 1937, he started an ambitious project to collect all of his creations together and then put them into order according to theme. In this, the first volume of the projected project, Troitzky presented in order endgames which either started with a queen or a rook already on the board or else with a solution that involved promoting a pawn to a queen or a rook. Looking at the section starting on page 259 entitled "Classification of Studies by Themes", one can see the logical ordering of this book. Previous reprints of this work have omitted 72 pages which include the analysis of the two knights vs. pawn endgames which Troitzky proved for the first time leads to a win for the two knights, depending on the position of the pawn. By removing this section, previous editors butchered the work, because many of these compositions end with a position involving two knights against a pawn. In these cases, Troitzky simply writes "And wins". To see how White wins one needs the section on two knights against pawn. Here is the complete work. Nowadays, the great sport has become trying to bust or "cook" by computer analysis the long established problems such as those in this book. However, Troitzky's compositions have stood the test of time more than those of other composers. Computers have a horizon beyond which they cannot see. Thus, endgame composition and analysis is one field where humans can still beat and perhaps will always be able to defeat even the most powerful computers. The problems in this book are truly fantastic. The solutions look impossible. Yet, what seems like many defenses are simply not there. Somehow there are no safe places where the king or queen can escape or there is a knight just in exactly the right spot to give a fork. It is good that the solutions come right after the problems, because nobody could ever solve them if the solutions were put in the back.
