This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular History of France, From the Earliest Times, Vol. 4 of 4 It has been said in this History that Louis XIV. had the fortune to find himself at the culminating point of absolute monarchy, and to profit by the labors of his predecessors, reaping a portion of their glory; he had likewise the honor of enriching himself with the labors of his contemporaries, and attracting to himself a share of their lustre; the honor, be it said, not the fortune, for he managed to remain the centre of intellectual movement as well as of the court, of literature and art as well as affairs of state. Only the abrupt and solitary genius of Pascal or the prankish and ingenuous geniality of La Fontaine held aloof from king and court; Racine and Moliere, Bossuet and Fenelon, La Bruyere and Boileau lived frequently in the circle of Louis XIV., and enjoyed in different degrees his favor; M. de la Rochefoucauld and Madame de Sevigne were of the court; Lebrun, Rigaud, Mignard, painted for the king; Perrault and Mansard constructed the Louvre and Versailles; the learned of all countries considered it an honor to correspond with the new academies founded in France. Louis XIV. was even less a man of letters or an artist than an administrator or a soldier: but literature and art, as well as the superintendents and the generals, found in him the King. The puissant unity of the reign is everywhere the same. The king and the nation are in harmony. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Story of Old France Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Old France Classic Reprint written by H. A. Guerber and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Old France The aim of this volume is to give a complete graphic account of the main features of the history of France to 1715 A.D., with as much additional illuminating detail as limited space permits. Besides outlines of the principal events, this narrative includes many biographical sketches, together with the anecdotes and sayings to which allusions are often made in literature, politics, and art. It also gives such data in regard to places, public buildings, and works of art as the well informed like to have at their fingers' ends. As the book is intended mainly for youthful readers, due regard has been paid to moral teachings and to the judicious omission of harmful incidents. The book is arranged for elementary history classes, and for supplementary reading as well. Some acquaintance with the history of France is most helpful in understanding and studying literature, and English, American, Medieval, and General history. Besides, in schools where French is taught, it can serve as a work of reference for the pupils, who continually stumble across names and allusions which require elucidation. The author, therefore, hopes many schools will find this narrative useful in one or the other connection, and that it will appeal equally to teachers and pupils and perhaps to other readers also. Many names occur and recur in the text because familiarity with their appearance is desirable from an educational point of view. Book A History of France Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of France Classic Reprint written by Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of France It Often happens that those of us who live in great cities do not know our next door neighbors. In the great world it is very much the same and we know little or nothing about our neighbors. Hundreds of years ago a French writer called us his next neighbor. It was impossible, he said, to write about France without also writing about England. That is very true, for during hundreds of years the history of the two countries mixed and mingled. Yet in spite of that Jacques Bonhomme and John Bull have gone on liv ing side by side knowing little of each other's history, understanding little of each other's ways. For during hundreds of years France and England were deadly enemies, and Englishmen cared little about the history of France. They thought that they knew enough about Frenchmen when they knew how to fight them. But those days have long gone past, and now Jacques Bonhomme is not only our next neighbor, but our very good friend. That being so, British boys and girls are no longer con tent to know nothing about this friend, and several years ago I got a letter from a little English boy. I like that book, he said, and I wish you would write one just the same, only about France, because we can't find anything nice about France. Since then I have received many such letters both from British boys and girls and from their cousins in America. I promised them all that some day they should have the book they asked for. They were not very pleased with that promise, I think. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French History for English Children The country which we now call France was not always called so, nor were the people who live in it always called the French. When it is first mentioned, which is in old Latin books written more than 1800 years ago, it is called Gallia, or Gaul, and the people are spoken of as Gauls. Gaul was in some respects the same as France is now, and in some respects very different. It was the same, or nearly the same, in its mountains, rivers, and some of the chief towns it was different in its roads, fields, villages, and, more than all, in the people who lived in it. 'when I say that some of the towns were the same, I do not mean that they look the same now as they did then, but that the Gauls had towns in many of the places where the French now have them, and that they have lasted with almost the same names ever Since. Book A Popular History of France

Download or read book A Popular History of France written by H. W. Dulcken and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-09 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular History of France: Condensed From the Dfext of Emile De Bonnechose, and Brought Down to the First Years of the Present Republic The well-known and deservedly popular History of France by Emile de Bonnechose has been selected to form the basis of the present work because of its great intrinsic merits. It is in every way desirable that the English-speaking peoples, all over the globe, should become increasingly familiar with the history of the great French nation, with which they have been so intimately connected in the past, as friends and neighbours, with whom they have been, not unfrequently, in hostility, sometimes through misunderstandings which fuller knowledge and sympathy would have prevented, some times through the ambition and recklessness of kings and rulers, and sometimes undoubtedly for great principles. The extent to which the various French provinces, with their diverse peoples, influenced English, Scotch and Irish life and history at successive stages, and the reacting influences of the British nation and cha racter upon France, cannot be comprehended without a study of the history of the French nation. English history alone gives but a one sided view of matters, and few writers have been able to shake off the partiality of patriotism so as to be entirely fair to our neighbours and frequent opponents. Thus, the value to an English man's education of reading the romantic and varied narrative of French history, as told by a Frenchman of approved critical ability, can hardly be over-estimated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution and Napoleon NO historian believes that history repeats itself. Yet, between different ages there are frequently striking analogies and resemblances. It is prob lems that repeat themselves, not the conditions which determine their solution. One of these problems, recurrent in European annals, is that of the maintenance of a certain balance of power among the various nations as essential to their freedom, the maintenance of a situation to which they are accustomed and which-they have found tolerable, a change in which would be prejudicial or dangerous to their peace and safety. Several times in modern history this balance has been threatened and Europe has purchased immunity from servitude by freely giving its life blood that life might remain and might be worth living.
