This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book analyses patterns of women’s political participation and evaluates disparity between levels of women’s participation in politics and representation in governance in Nigeria. It also examines the causes of women’s underrepresentation in governance and decision-making as well as their implications for the country’s socioeconomic development and describes strategies for increased women’s representation in governance and decision-making in Nigeria. This study relies on political-culture and liberal-feminist theory and adopts a mixed-method research design involving quantitative and qualitative methods. It uses multistage sampling in selecting Nigeria’s South-East, North-West and South-West geopolitical-zones and 1206 women of electoral age for the study survey conducted using structured questionnaire and in-depth interview.

Book Women s Political Visibility and Media Access

Download or read book Women s Political Visibility and Media Access written by Oladokun Omojola and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-12 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The constitutions of most countries frown at gender discrimination. Local, multinational and multilateral organizations in many developed and developing nations have instituted policies and taken actions that address cases of injustice against women. But gender inequity appears to be an issue beyond what constitutional provisions and corporate strategies can address. How, for instance, does a statutory provision guarantee the equal visibility of men and women in a news report, especially in a neoliberal democracy where the general patriarchal character of the media aligns with the logic of commercialism which prioritizes profit and targets mainly those who have the means of purchase? The invisibility of women in the media is a global issue, and a great concern in Africa. Women’s Political Visibility and Media Access: The Case of Nigeria, however, is about a country of over 160 million people; a population roughly divided equally between male and female. The book, through empirical analyses and qualitative discourses, agglomerates several perspectives regarding the visibility of women in the turbulent Nigerian political terrain and the response of the media in that direction, in a concerted effort to resolve the burning issues of gender equality in Nigeria. The book assesses the impact of aggressive tactics from women in the political arena, “conscious reporting” of women by journalists, and the increased use of ICTs by women as practical ways of bridging this wide gap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria has acceded to several regional and international covenants promoting the rights and well-being of women. In July 2000 it made an official statement of intent to promote gender equality by endorsing a National Policy on Women. Yet, the vast majority of women persist on the periphery of economic and political life. In spite of a considerable degree of compatibility between women's aspirations and the NPW, particularly in terms of addressing immediate practical necessity, awareness of its existence and that of the new National Gender Policy remains low. Consequently, there is no concerted agenda to push for policy implementation. The Gender Management System put in place by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs to oversee the mainstreaming of gender policy is undermined by institutionalised and routinised gender bias and by systemic distortions in the wider policy environment. This book examines the relevance of the NPW to the aspirations of Nigerian women, through their eyes. It explores the experiences, perspectives and collective agendas of women across class, ethnicity and religion to discover their understandings of the present and visions for the future. It also investigates the extent to which state institutional capability exists to implement gender policy, and to mainstream gender perspectives as the policy stipulates. This book provides valuable resource material for public policy analysts, development practitioners and feminist scholars of politics, sociology, economics, anthropology and African, cultural, religious and development studies.

Book Nigerian Women s Participation in National Politics

Download or read book Nigerian Women s Participation in National Politics written by Kamene Okonjo and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The political marginalization of women in the Habe States of northern Nigeria began with the introduction of Islam in the 11th century and was virtually completed by the Fulani conquest of the Habe States in the 19th century (Calloway 1987:11-18). Formal British rule, imposed early in the 20th century, reinforced this trend in southern Nigeria by excluding women from many of their diverse and substantial political roles. Post-independence Nigerian governments have attempted to reverse this situation by including a limited number of women in government. But this tokenism has neither met the need for sexual equality of representation in government nor ensured stability through a diversified distribution of power. Progressive but limited action is being taken, as more serious thought is given to the problem of eliminating the gender biases of the Nigerian political system.
