Book Understanding by Design

Download or read book Understanding by Design written by Grant P. Wiggins and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2005 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is understanding and how does it differ from knowledge? How can we determine the big ideas worth understanding? Why is understanding an important teaching goal, and how do we know when students have attained it? How can we create a rigorous and engaging curriculum that focuses on understanding and leads to improved student performance in today's high-stakes, standards-based environment? Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. Drawing on feedback from thousands of educators around the world who have used the UbD framework since its introduction in 1998, the authors have greatly revised and expanded their original work to guide educators across the K-16 spectrum in the design of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

Book Resource Use and Instructional Improvement Strategies at the School Site

Download or read book Resource Use and Instructional Improvement Strategies at the School Site written by Ronald D. Tolman and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how twelve individual schools in Wyoming utilized resources and implemented instructional strategies to organize, prioritize and plan for improved student performance. This study identified school improvement strategies, resource use in school, and the alignment between school improvement strategies and resource use in those schools. The study attempted to identify resource strategies and/or instructional improvement strategies that appeared to be more associated with schools making larger student performance gains than other schools. This study served to inform a larger study supervised by Lawrence Picus and Associates who were conducting research for the Wyoming State Legislature. This study was duplicated by approximately 19 other researchers during the same time frame for this purpose. Ten school principals were interviewed and data were collected regarding the instructional strategies of the school, resource use practices in the school, the degree of alignment between instructional strategies and resource use, and practices that appeared to be more associated with student performance improvement. Data were collected to compare actual resource use to the Wyoming education finance funding model. All data were reviewed and a case study for each school was written following an outline prescribed by Picus and Associates. The data in the case studies were then analyzed and formed the basis for the conclusions of this study. Several conclusions were reached in this study. The study found that while schools employed a variety of instructional strategies for school improvement five instructional strategies were common in the schools. The study found that schools allocated resources in traditional ways while beginning to reallocate resources more in line with the Wyoming funding model. The study found that schools aligned instructional strategies and resource use to some degree and it was found that the schools were not able to track resource use and instructional strategy alignment in detail. No conclusive findings were found as to which practices were more associated with student performance improvement although some possible promising practices were identified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we systemically improve the quality of classroom instruction and the learning and achievement of students? In an era when isolated examples of excellence are not good enough, we need systems that support improvement and excellence for all. This book describes how systems can effectively engage in this complex, challenging, and crucial work. The authors explore three core competencies of high-performing school systems: (1) understanding what the work is—a deep understanding of the core business of facilitating learning, a vision of what that looks like, and an awareness of where the system is in relation to that vision; (2) knowing how to do the work—a theory of action for improving instruction, a focus on key strategies, and effective alignment of resources; and (3) building the individual and organizational “habits of mind” that foster continuous improvement. Each chapter includes examples that illustrate key concepts in action, questions to spur self-assessment in key areas of competence, and tools and resources for building capacity at different levels and stages of development.

The authors of Collaborative School Improvement argue that districts can play a powerful part in helping schools build the capacity to engage in inquiry-based reform—but that this effort requires a shift in districts’ traditional role as a professional development provider. Drawing on case studies from three districts, the authors identify eight key practices for effective school-district collaboration. By helping districts teach—and model—an inquiry-based process, Collaborative School Improvement promises to offer powerful new support for scaling up data-driven instructional reform."
