Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plain Examination of Socialism In Book I., I state certain fundamental facts of human nature, as well as certain economic principles which I believe to have the character of immutable natural laws. In Book II. Is given a brief description of the present system of human society with respect to its economic dealings; the socialistic attack on this present system, the weakness of the objections thereto, and the insuperable difficulties of remedying them. In Book III we step into the socialists' camp, take up their general proposals, examine them in detail, and show what, if anything, they must lead to. I have endeavoured to treat the subject strictly from an economic standpoint, believing that socialism in any form can only be combated successfully by presenting valid economic arguments against it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical Examination of Socialism The subject is one, however, which, if it were to be treated exhaustively, would demand a series of volumes rather than a series Of chapters, and the arguments here set forth are written in a species Of short-hand, and at almost every turn are susceptible Of indefinite amplification. But for practical pur poses a short book which is suggestive is likely to be more use than a long one, whose argument, while more complete, might be less easily grasped and less easily available for controversial and educative purposes. What I contemplate doing at some future time is to reproduce the main argument Of this volume in a more purely constructive and less controversial form, and, having thus sketched its various parts in outline, as an introduction, to elaborate each part separately in subsequent portions Of the work. In especial, the various forms and gradations Of individual manual labor would be analyzed more fully than it has been possible to analyze them here; and a Similarly minute treatment would be applied to the directive faculties, from their simplest and most rudimentary up to their highest forms. The dynamics of motive, their relation to the general structure Of society, the difierent kinds Of life and effort imposed by nature on any society that aims at any kind of civilization, and many other subjects which need not be here specified, would all, in the same way, receive separate treatment. Book Introduction to Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introduction to Socialism Classic Reprint written by Forgotten Books and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Socialism The report is on a crop of bushels, and the commissioner divides the total data by giving the cost for 20 bushels. Human labor 2 hours, 58 minutes (call it 3 hours). Animal labor (an item that we shall later see will soon be eliminated), 8 hours. Twenty bushels for three hours' labor. Add 1-3 that it may more nearly conform with our definition of labor cost, and we have 20 bushels for four hours, or our assumed Socialist day. How many bushels can you now get for a 10-hour day? And mark this, that this report includes every item of labor from the time men go forth to plow the ground until the wheat is sacked and stored in the granary. But men do not go to this work with a single plow, a pair of bob-tailed mules and chain harness - do not go forth to wear them selves out plodding all, day to turn over about one and one-half acres. They go with steam plows and steam threshers; they do the work as it should be done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Study in Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Study in Socialism Classic Reprint written by Benedict Elder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study in Socialism I know if you do not ask me, said St. Augustine, when asked: What is Time? Most of us feel that we know what Socialism is until we begin to define it. It may be called a modern social phenomenon. It springs from modern industrial conditions as they are combined with the more modern phases of sentiment and thought. A more particular definition would only invite criticism and dispute. Socialists themselves are not agreed on a definition. One says it is a religious movement,1 another a moral movement,2 another, a humanitarian movement.3 In the Communist Manifesto it is termed a proletarian movement, in the Chicago platform, a purely economic movement, in the Gotha and Erfurt Programs and other official utterances in Europe and America, a revolutionary movement, a political movement, a working-class move ment, a movement for the abolition of classes, for better working conditions, for social justice, for the emancipa tion of labor, etc., etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Democracy Versus Socialism

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy Versus Socialism: A Critical Examination of Socialism, as a Remedy for Social Injustice and an Exposition of the Single Tax Doctrine A movement which draws its vitality, as Socialism does, from the poverty and haunting sense' of injustice of its rank and file, and from the moral elevation and unselfish pity of the leaders, cannot be successfully met even by the most triumphant demonstration of the impracticability of the remedies which it proposes. Revolting against the injustice of existing social arrangements and the evils thence resulting, preferring the risk Of failure to ignoble acquiescence, the advocates of Socialism are, not unnaturally, deaf to merely negative criticism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Socialism For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working - classes, of women, and of the down - trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Book The Case for Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Case for Socialism Classic Reprint written by Fred Henderson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case for Socialism One of the most remarkable and hopeful aspects of the present great revival of Socialism, and one of the earnests of its ultimate triumph, is the sudden multitude of capable workers it has called into activity. The older movement in the "eighties" had only a few spokesmen and writers; now one can scarcely take up a local newspaper without finding evidence of capable exponents. Socialism, it is scarcely too much to say, has given men souls, has created minds; never was there a movement so independent of its leaders, so sure to produce men at its need. Here, for instance, is Mr. Henderson, with this admirable tract of his. I know he will forgive my confessing that I had never heard of him until my friend Mr. Gerald Gould called my attention to his manuscript. And here it is, closely and clearly reasoned, persuasive, plain, and easy. Let the reader compare it with Mr. Arnold Forster's recent ridiculous attack upon the Socialist position - or rather, I should say, his recent misunderstanding and misstatement of the Socialist position. Let the reader put it thoughtfully beside the utterance of any contemporary anti-Socialist, except, let us say, Mr. Mallock. There is no gainsaying its superior grip, its force, its conviction. It is one more good weapon for the propaganda of the most inspiring movement, the best-equipped movement intellectually, that the world has ever seen. Book Recent American Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recent American Socialism Classic Reprint written by Richard T. Ely and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent American Socialism "I presume you have felt, as have I, the sting of criticism and censure - of misrepresentation because discussing this topic of socialism at all." These are words written to me in a letter recently received, by a friend who is professor of political economy in a prominent Western university. They indicate at once a difficulty in the way of the economist. The topics he discusses are so vital, that any presentation of them is bound to be misconstrued in some quarter. Nevertheless, there seems to be only one course for an honest man, which is to say his word and patiently endure misunderstanding and even malicious abuse. But it may not be out of place for me to state the purpose of this monograph. The aim of the present paper is so clear that only unfortunate experience in the past leads me to explain it in the preface. When my "French and German Socialism" was published, one ill-natured critic complained because my opinions were not distinguished from the opinions I was endeavoring to expound. This criticism was echoed in other places. Now it had not occurred to me that it was necessary' to thrust my opinions upon the reader of the history of French and German Socialism. In reading works covering like ground I had often been annoyed by childish criticism such as must occur to every boy, criticism thrust into the midst of the presentation of some theoretical system, so I resolved to abstain from anything of the kind and thought it sufficient to let the facts speak for themselves. The aim of this monograph is quite similar.. It is primarily a presentation and not a refutation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
