Book Robert Clifton Weaver and the American City

Download or read book Robert Clifton Weaver and the American City written by Wendell E. Pritchett and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his role as Franklin Roosevelt’s “negro advisor” to his appointment under Lyndon Johnson as the first secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Robert Clifton Weaver was one of the most influential domestic policy makers and civil rights advocates of the twentieth century. This volume, the first biography of the first African American to hold a cabinet position in the federal government, rescues from obscurity the story of a man whose legacy continues to affect American race relations and the cities in which they largely play out. Tracing Weaver’s career through the creation, expansion, and contraction of New Deal liberalism, Wendell E. Pritchett illuminates his instrumental role in the birth of almost every urban initiative of the period, from public housing and urban renewal to affirmative action and rent control. Beyond these policy achievements, Weaver also founded racial liberalism, a new approach to race relations that propelled him through a series of high-level positions in public and private agencies working to promote racial cooperation in American cities. But Pritchett shows that despite Weaver’s efforts to make race irrelevant, white and black Americans continued to call on him to mediate between the races—a position that grew increasingly untenable as Weaver remained caught between the white power structure to which he pledged his allegiance and the African Americans whose lives he devoted his career to improving.

Book excerpt: The historic town of Clifton, Virginia, is an enchanting relic of a time past. This quarter-mile-square town of 225 inhabitants has seen little change since the early 20th century. Twenty-seven miles from the nation's capital, this little gem of yesterday is often missed by busy commuters. Clifton was originally a Native American hunting ground, then a large plantation, and eventually became known as Devereux Station, named for J. H. Devereux, overseer of the Union army's railroad construction. Harrison Otis settled here and built the handsome Clifton Hotel. Local hot springs, shops, lumber industry, schools, and churches soon created a thriving, progressive area of commerce. Originally named Clifton Station, Clifton was later incorporated in 1902. It was the first community in Fairfax County with a black Baptist church, electricity, and a high school, and it has hosted visitors as varied as Presidents Hayes and Garfield, actress Helen Hayes, First Lady Nancy Reagan, and Sleepless in Seattle author Jeff Arch. Clifton has been and is still a gentle, picturesque village.

Book A Place Called Appomattox

Download or read book A Place Called Appomattox written by William Marvel and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2008-02-12 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Place Called Appomattox, William Marvel turns his extensive Civil War scholarship toward Appomattox County, Virginia, and the village of Appomattox Court House, which became synonymous with the end of the Civil War when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant there in 1865. Marvel presents a formidably researched and elegantly written analysis of the county from 1848 to 1877, using it as a microcosm of Southern attitudes, class issues, and shifting cultural mores that shaped the Civil War and its denouement. With an eye toward correcting cultural myths and enriching the historical record, Marvel analyzes the rise and fall of the village and county from 1848 to 1877, detailing the domestic economic and social vicissitudes of the village, and setting the stage for the flight of Lee’s Army toward Appomattox and the climactic surrender that still resonates today. Now available for the first time in paperback, A Place Called Appomattox reveals a new view of the Civil War, tackling some of the thorniest issues often overlooked by the nostalgic exaggerations and historical misconceptions that surround Lee’s surrender.
