Book Impact of Age ambiguous and Sexualized Clothing Styles on the Self concept of Early Adolescent Females

This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of age-ambiguous and sexualized clothing styles (ASCS) on the development of early adolescent females' self-concept. Both the socialization and consumer socialization models were utilized to address the factors contributing to the development of early adolescent females. Thirty-one young adult female college students participated in in-depth interviews consisting of retrospective questions concerning the clothing styles adopted in early adolescence and an evaluation of their current self-concept through the Who am I? test. All of their mothers were also interviewed in regards to the clothing styles their daughters adopted in early adolescence and the relationship they perceived those styles had with their daughters' current self-concept. For data analysis the constant comparative method and open-coding were used, resulting in the following findings. First, ASCS in the US were typically represented by spaghetti straps, low-rise jeans, midriff bearing tops, short skirts or shorts, and logo tees emblazoned with sexual innuendos. Second, the reasons early adolescent females adopted ASCS were in order to fit-in, to be cool and popular.

Book Masculinity and Femininity

Download or read book Masculinity and Femininity written by Janet T. Spence and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many societies assign sharply distinguished roles to men and women. Personality differences, as well as physical differences, between men and women are used to justify these different sex roles, and women are seen as more emotionally and interpersonally sensitive than men, while men are said to be more competent, achievement oriented, and assertive than women. A widely held view is that not only do men and women differ but that possession of "masculine" characteristics precludes possession of "feminine" characteristics. This bipolar conception has led to the definition of masculinity and femininity as opposites. Acceptance of this idea has caused social scientists and laypersons to consider men and women who possess cross-sex personality characteristics as less emotionally healthy and socially adjusted than those with sex-appropriate traits. Previous research by the authors and others, done almost exclusively with college students, has shown, however, that masculinity and femininity do not relate negatively to each other, thus supporting a dualistic rather than a bipolar conception of these two psychological dimensions. Spence and Helmreich present data showing that the dualistic conception holds for a large number of groups, varying widely in age, geographical location, socioeconomic status, and patterns of interest, whose psychological masculinity and femininity were measured with an objective instrument, the Personality Attributes Questionnaire, devised by the authors. Many individuals are shown to be appropriately sex-typed; that is, men tend to be high in masculinity and low in femininity and women the reverse. However, a substantial number of men and women are androgynous—high in both masculine and feminine characteristics—while some are not high in either. Importantly, the authors find that androgynous individuals display more self-esteem, social competence, and achievement orientation than individuals who are strong in either masculinity or femininity or are not strong in either. One of the major contributions of the work is the development of a new, multifaceted measure of achievement motivation (the Work and Family Orientation Questionnaire), which can be used successfully to predict behavior in both males and females and is related to masculinity and femininity in both sexes. In addition to investigating the correlates of masculinity and femininity, the authors attempt to isolate parental factors that contribute to the development of these characteristics and achievement motivation. The book includes analyses of data from students on their perception of their parents, which enable the authors to examine the influence of parental masculinity and femininity and parental behaviors and child-rearing attitudes on the development of masculinity and femininity and achievement motivation characteristics in their children. The important implications of these findings for theories of sex roles, personality development, and achievement motivation are examined.

Book Predicting Males Self concept of Attractivness and Its Relation to Risk Behaviors and Psychological Adjustment in High School

Download or read book Predicting Males Self concept of Attractivness and Its Relation to Risk Behaviors and Psychological Adjustment in High School written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of body image in relation to self-concept and behavioral issues is well documented in research on specialized female populations. These studies have generally focused on self-concept, behavioral, health and mental health outcomes for the participants. The present study sought to extend the existing research scope to include male populations. The link between self-concept and physical appearance was explored, as was the relationship between self-concept and behavioral and mental health outcomes. Data for the current study was obtained by using a sample of male participants from the Michigan Study of Adolescent Life Transitions (MSALT). Two waves of data from the participants' sophomore and senior year were analyzed for 666 students. Participants in the current study answered varied questions about body image including questions about their height, weight, sense of masculine appearance, value of appearing masculine to others, psychological adjustment and behaviors in which they engaged. Results from MANOVA and repeated measure ANOVA's indicate that there is a link between subjective and objective measures of masculine appearance and self-concept of attractiveness. Further analyses indicate that self-concept of attractiveness is related to psychological adjustment including self-esteem, social isolation, and depressed mood. Finally, while several significant relationships were found between self-concept of attractiveness and levels of behavioral problems in the sample, the current study did not utilize experimental design, and therefore could not test causal links between variables. Strengths of the current study in terms of design and sample are discussed. Future directions for research in this area are suggested including item design and sample selection.

Book excerpt: "Although the adolescent girl's interest in self-enhancement has long been recognized, the actual research in this field has been negligible. This study was undertaken in an effort to apply some of the recent findings in adolescent psychology and the psychology of personality to an understanding of girls' behavior in relation to their appearance and dress. Since this research was first begun, considerable popular interest has been focused on teen-age girls' clothing and appearance. For example, the teen-age group has received much attention as a merchandise market; special departments in shops have been built up, new lines of cosmetics created solely for their use have been launched, and fashion magazines with special appeal for this age group have been introduced. It would therefore seem to be more important than ever to investigate systematically this sphere of girls' interests in order to provide additional bases for interpreting the psychological factors underlying girls' preferences in clothes and the satisfactions they seek to gain from the manner of their dress"--Preface.
