Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pilgrim and His Pilgrimage It has occurred to me that the story of my life as told by myself would, in a measure, be interesting to many whose life has touched and enriched my own. Book excerpt: Pilgrimage in the Western world is enjoying a growing popularity, perhaps more so now than at any time since the Middle Ages. The Pilgrim Journey tells the fascinating story of how pilgrimage was born and grew in antiquity, how it blossomed in the Middle Ages and faltered in subsequent centuries, only to re-emerge stronger than before in modern times. James Harpur describes the pilgrim routes and sacred destinations past and present, the men and women making the journey, the many challenges of travel, and the spiritual motivations and rewards. He also explores the traditional stages of pilgrimage, from preparation, departure, and the time on the road, to the arrival at the shrine and the return home. At the heart of pilgrimage is a spiritual longing that has existed from time immemorial. The Pilgrim Journey is both the colourful chronicle of numerous pilgrims of centuries past searching for heaven on earth, and an illuminating guide for today's spiritual traveller.

Book A Pilgrimage to Eternity

Download or read book A Pilgrimage to Eternity written by Timothy Egan and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From "the world's greatest tour guide," a deeply-researched, captivating journey through the rich history of Christianity and the winding paths of the French and Italian countryside that will feed mind, body, and soul (New York Times). "What a wondrous work! This beautifully written and totally clear-eyed account of his pilgrimage will have you wondering whether we should all embark on such a journey, either of the body, the soul or, as in Egan's case, both." --Cokie Roberts "Egan draws us in, making us feel frozen in the snow-covered Alps, joyful in valleys of trees with low-hanging fruit, skeptical of the relics of embalmed saints and hopeful for the healing of his encrusted toes, so worn and weathered from their walk."--The Washington Post Moved by his mother's death and his Irish Catholic family's complicated history with the church, Timothy Egan decided to follow in the footsteps of centuries of seekers to force a reckoning with his own beliefs. He embarked on a thousand-mile pilgrimage through the theological cradle of Christianity to explore the religion in the world that it created. Egan sets out along the Via Francigena, once the major medieval trail leading the devout to Rome, and travels overland via the alpine peaks and small mountain towns of France, Switzerland and Italy, accompanied by a quirky cast of fellow pilgrims and by some of the towering figures of the faith--Joan of Arc, Henry VIII, Martin Luther. The goal: walking to St. Peter's Square, in hopes of meeting the galvanizing pope who is struggling to hold together the church through the worst crisis in half a millennium. A thrilling journey, a family story, and a revealing history, A Pilgrimage to Eternity looks for our future in its search for God.

Book excerpt: Although this book was written more than 300 years ago, The Pilgrim's Progress continues to be reprinted and gain new readers throughout the years. It has also been published in no less than 200 languages and is widely read the world over, so much so that it is said to be second to the Bible in terms of readership. The author sails through his narrative without dividing it into chapters. Instead, he separates his saga into 2 parts. He begins with a poetic Apology before taking readers to the first-person account of Christian, the Pilgrim and main protagonist of this Christian-themed story. The Pilgrim Christian's experience is the highlight of the first part of the book. The second part reveals the experiences of Christian's wife, Christiana, as well as his four sons. In part I, they did not accompany Christian on his pilgrimage as they could not be persuaded to do so. In part II, they decide to go through the same route that Christian took and went through various difficulties unique to them. The other characters in the book are named after certain personality attributes. Obstinate, Formalist, Hopeful, and Faithful are just some of them. In addition, some settings and places are named after Biblical locations, such as Mount Zion and Mount Sinai. This particular 1910 edition comes with beautiful monochromatic and highly detailed illustrations by Frank C. Pape. Christian readers definitely will enjoy reading and learning from this allegorical story more with the inclusion of Pape's images. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The People of the Pilgrimage: An Expository Study of the "Pilgrim's Progress" As a Book of Character; First Series, True Piligrims The book owes something perhaps to every important work which has appeared with the Pilgrim's Progress for its theme but it owes nearly everything to Bunyan himself, whose mind it would fain interpret freely and at first hand. And the study which this involves only heightens one's esteem alike for the author and for the man whose finest legacy is the Allegory which these pages are honoured in contributing to unfold. Among those to whose kindness the book is more or less indebted, thankful mention ought to be made of the late Dr Robertson of Irvine the Rev. R. J. Sandeman of Edinburgh the Rev. John macknight of Whitburn Thomas Chalmers Hetherington, Esq., of Rangoon and the Rev. John Kennedy of Liff, Dundee, whose casual suggestion, offered more than half-a - dozen years ago, was the germ out of which the book ultimately sprang. Book The Pilgrim Ship Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Pilgrim Ship Classic Reprint written by James Black and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim Ship M Y tale is at once an allegory of the Church and an allegory of the Soul. I frankly disclaim anything original in it, except perhaps its setting and choice of material. Certainly, the main idea has been the common property of the Church in all ages, - ever since, indeed, men thought of the Christian life as a voyage and pilgrimage, with its adventure and its goal. It may even be that many have used the parable as I now do, although their work is unknown to me. Should that be so, I trust I have not entrenched on their labors. In the details of my story, I have tried to make the past live before my readers in a homely way. If I have succeeded at all in doing so, my reward is with me. Finally, I have written only for those who possess the divine gift of imagination and are young in heart. Yet some of these are precious stones, and are well worth preserving. And so I have gathered up a few of the pebbles in the path, and as the journey's end seems drawing on, I love to look over the treasures which memory has stored up, and show to my fellow travelers some of the precious things which I have found in the way that the Lord hath led me.
