Book Christian Philosophy Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christian Philosophy Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Ephraim Langdon Frothingham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Philosophy, Vol. 1 Christian philosophy is necessarily founded upon conceptions of the nature of God, of the origin and nature of the universe, and of the relation of God to the universe and to man. In our time, the greatest con fusion exists, even within the precincts of the Christian chui ch, with regard to these fundamental ideas and conceptions which contradict each other are recognized, either from an external eclecticism, or from an internal inversion by the Destructive Reason with the view to confound opposite ideas in the interest of a nihilistic or of a pantheistic philosophy. This perversion and inver Sion of Christian thought are produced by transcendental philosophy (german in origin) and by evolutionary sci ence (english in origin), which work together to establish in the Church an Antichristian, materialistic, and panthe istic philosophy. There is, in our century, and extending to all departments of intelligence, a renaissance of Pagan thought quite analogous to that effected in the fifteenth century and onward, and our period, equally with that, calls for a new birth or regeneration of Christian thought from a more universal insight into the fundamental ideas of Christianity. From 'the very need of it, therefore, we may look for a new dogmatic form of Christian theology that shall iflcorporate the fundamental and primitive ideas of Christianity, as an historical institution, in forms of imaginative thought which Shall correspond to that more internal condition of the Reason and of the Re. Book The Philosophy of the Christian Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Philosophy of the Christian Religion Classic Reprint written by A. M. Fairbairn and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Christian Religion This book may be describe as an attempt to do two things: first, to explain religion through nature and; and, secondly, to consure Christianity through religion. The author conceives religion to be a joint product of the mind within man and the nature around him, the mind being the source of the ideas which constitute its soul, the nature around determining the usages and customs which build up its body. He does not think, therefore, that any one of its special forms can be explained without the local nature which begot and shaped it, or that its general being can be resolved and construed without the reason or thought which is common to the race. He sees in religion the greatest of all mans unconscious creations, and the most potent of the means which the past, while it was still a living present, formed for the making of the man and the times that were yet to be. The beliefs of the author are writ large on almost every page, and these he need neither explain nor justify here; but a word or two may be said as to the occasion which defined not so much the problem of the book as its scope and point of view. Some years ago he had the honour of being appointed by the University of Chicago lecturer on the Haskell foundation. The conditions of the endowment were that a certain number of lectures should be delivered in India, especially in the Presidency towns. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Christian Philosophy, Vol. 2: April, 1883In pursuing the present inquiry, we shall, first of all, examine the question, to what length of time history proper goes back for how many centuries or millennia do the contemporary writ ten records of historic man indicate or prove his existence upon the earth? And here, in the first place, the inquiry may be restricted to the nations of the Eastern Hemisphere. The New World, at the time of its discovery by Europe, possessed nothing that de serves the name oi history. The picture-writings of the Aztecs were not records, but symbolic representations capable of being variously interpreted, and only supposed to become intelligible by the application to them of oral tradition.' Thus the native races of America, prior to the Spanish conquests, belong to the category of prehistoric and not of historic man, ' and there fore do not come under our present head of inquiry.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Christianity 1. "God is a Spirit." 2. "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is One Lord." 3. "There are three Persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and these are one God." 4. "The three Persons of the Godhead are of one essence, consubstantial each with the others." 5. The three are differentiated in person and in office; and yet they possess their personal distinctions in complete sphericity and exercise their several offices in free and perfect conspiracy. 6. "And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him, male and female created he them." 7. In the Manhead there are three persons, Adam, Eve and the Son; and these three are one Man. 8. The three are differentiated in person and in office; and yet in their normal estate, they progressively possess their personal distinctions in complete sphericity and discharge their several offices in free and perfect conspiracy. 9. The Son is the immediate offspring, who mediates the reproduction of Adam in the human race. In the larger sense the Son is the human race progenerate. 10. The Son in neither sense is in himself an organism, or solidarity; but as the Son (in latter sense) progressively achieves his sonship, he approaches the actualization of his own individual personality. The human race (progenerate) is therefore, a solidarity more or less completely actualized so long, and only so long, as it sustains its normal relation to its head, Adam. It is then in Adam that the human race (progenerate) has its principle of unity or solidarity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Thought Weak men on both sides have done much harm - the weak religionists by assuming, and the weak scientists by claiming, for guesses and hypotheses the high character and full value of real truth. The guesses of both have collided in the air, and a real battle seemed impending; but it was only guesses which exploded - bubbles, not bombs; and it is never to be for gotten that a professor of religion has just as much right to guess as a professor of science, and the latter no more right nor skill than the former, although he has had more practice. Book The Christian Philosophy of Life

Download or read book The Christian Philosophy of Life written by Tilmann Pesch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Philosophy of Life: Reflections on the Truths of Religion The author of "The Christian Philosophy of Life" has reached the close of his earthly pilgrimage. "Finita sunt omnia. In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti! Amen?" Such were his last words. On October 18, 1899, death came to end his sharp, prolonged sufferings. It found him an exile at Valkenburg, a small town in the Netherlands, and his mortal remains have been laid to rest in foreign soil, but we trust that his soul is at home once more in the land where light and peace reign eternally. Tilmann Pesch was born in Cologne on February 1, 1836, and entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus at Munster on October 15, 1852. He was consecrated to the priesthood in January 1866, by that splendid champion of the liberty of the Church, Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler, in the chapel of the episcopal palace at Munich, and made his solemn vows at Aix-la-Chapelle on February 2, 1871. For the space of many years he filled the post of lecturer on philosophy, first at Maria-Laach, and subsequently at Blijenbeck, in Holland. The numerous works for which we are indebted to his pen form no mean contribution to Catholic letters, and attest alike his intellectual gifts and industry, whilst through the medium of his spiritual writings, sermons and conferences, he has brought counsel and comfort to many souls. Wide learning, in his case, was accompanied by a childlike humility, and his gentle, benignant spirit knew neither fear nor compromise wherever principles were at stake. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Thought: Lectures and Papers on Philosophy, Christian Evidence, Biblical Elucidation In this way, from the theological side, faith is made to seem at enmity with reason, wherever religious truth Is concerned. In the affairs of common life, Reason may be followed and be trusted by the devout and undevout alike. But she is not to gather up an inference, or to trace an analogy, which might tempt her upon forbidden ground; upon ground, that is, which is con sidered as belonging exclusively to Faith. From that sphere Reason would be repelled as an intruder, or, at most, called in to ratify conclusions dictated by Faith. Book A Handbook for Christian Philosophy

Download or read book A Handbook for Christian Philosophy written by L. Russ Bush and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 1991 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook acquaints readers with philosophy in an introductory and nontechnical way. These materials, first developed for use in classes as a supplement to other formal textbooks, are designed to gain the confidence of students who have no technical level of expertise in the field of philosophy. There is a very useful glossary at the end that will be of help to all readers, listing more than just simple definitions. Often the glossary explanations are like brief essays in themselves. Many significant issues arise in the field, but this book treats three in particular: theistic proofs, evil, and creation. A Handbook for Christian Philosophy offers several contributions that make it unique. First, there is a section on logic that relates the subject of logic to biblical exegesis. Second, the treatment of evil puts special emphasis on the biblical themes that provide practical and theoretical help for people who are experiencing evil and going through suffering. Third, the chapter on creation includes an up-to-date critique of naturalistic evolution and a review of the recurrent Christian principles on this topic. The author provides an excellent worldview evaluation, something that is desperately needed today by all Christians. The chapters include: What is philosophy?; How to study philosophy; Learning to think logically; Recognizing worldviews; Testing worldviews; The existence of God; Creation, the reasonable alternative; and a final chapter on God and evil.
