Book Life Notes Reflections of a British Virgin Islander

Download or read book Life Notes Reflections of a British Virgin Islander written by Joseph Reynold O'Neal and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2004-11-29 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword As the title of this book implies, Life Notes is largely about the personal recollections of a native British Virgin Islander, who has raised our awareness by committing to print a font of information about the times in which he lived hard times of the early years, the relatively good times of the middle years, and the visible and sometimes not so tangible achievements of a total life. Life Notes is not an historical text but it is eminently enlightening and charged with historical truths. It should be embraced as required reading for anyone who aspires to become familiar with the history and culture of the British Virgin Islands in the Twentieth Century. J.R.s folksy style as a writer makes it easy reading. He is humorous and engaging and, like the man himself, the book is compellingly frank and honest. Cyril B. Romney Former Chief Minister JOSEPH REYNOLD ONEAL was born in Virgin Gorda in 1911 and has led a rich and varied life since. An entrepreneur who evolved into one of the titans of business leadership in the Virgin Islands, Mr. ONeal (or J.R. as many call him) also found time to devote himself to political and environmental affairs. Mr. ONeal has won distinction and several awards for his many years of community service and for his leadership in the business arena. As chairman of the National Parks Trust for some thirty years, he spearheaded the reforestation of Sage Mountain and Gorda Peak. In recognition of his work on behalf of the Trust, the Botanic Gardens in Road Town were named in his honour in 1988. In 1990, Mr. ONeal was also named to the Global 500, a United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) honour roll of people who have contributed to the preservation of the environment around the world. Mr. ONeal was awarded the C.B.E. (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) by Her Majesty the Queen in 1998, following M.B.E. and O.B.E. awards. In 2002, he was awarded the Badge of Honour by the Government of the British Virgin Islands.

Download or read book A History of the Virgin Islands of the United States written by Isaac Dookhan and published by Kingston, Jamaica : Canoe Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Virgin Islands in the course of centuries have witnessed the coming and going of Ciboney, Arawak and Carib peoples, European discovery by Christopher Columbus, temporary occupation by pirates and adventurers, colonization, commercial and plantation development by Danes and other North European settlers, African slavery and its abolition, American purchase, colonial government, social and political change, and in recent years remarkable tourist and industrial developments. These and other topics have been narrated and interpreted by Dr. Isaac Dookhan in this first comprehensive history of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Dr. Dookhan is eminently well qualified for this undertaking. He was born in the British colony of British Guiana, now independent Guyana, where he was educated in the public schools and served as teacher and headmaster. The author has drawn upon primary and secondary sources in recounting the experience of the Virgin Islands and their peoples. He is concerned with successive waves of immigrants, how they affected the physical environment and cultural life of the islands, the impact of international wars and politics, commodity price movements, and technological changes.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Virgin Islands: Our New Possessions, and the British Islands Foundation, in which may be seen many specimens secured from the kitchen-middens of the Virgin Islands. Kitchen-middens are responsible for the prepa ration of this volume. Having become interested some years ago in the waste heaps built up at pre-historic back doors which the archeologist calls kitchen-middens, I welcomed the opportunity to talk of these absorbing relics of the past pre sented when I made the acquaintance of Mr. De Booy in the West Indies, where he has spent a number of winters in scientific exploration. His fascinating stories of experiences in the islands of the Caribbean led me to urge him to write this volume. He consented only on the condition that the book should be prepared jointly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The names Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands indeed do require some clarifications. The former is the original name given to the entire Archipelago by Christopher Columbus at the time of his historic landfall in 1493. However, the qualifying word British, which is added to Virgin Islands, could be viewed as an adaptation mainly to differentiate between the British Virgin Islands and United States Virgin Islands. In official and constitutional references, the term Virgin Islands is utilized exclusively. However, in other contexts, the terms British Virgin Islands and Virgin Islands are used interchangeably. The explanation of these differences should suffice at this stage. For further and more detailed information, each name should be reviewed under its particular alphabetical placement. The text is arranged generally in direct alphabetical order. The various alphabetical entries deal with a variety of information, except two categories, which are integral parts of the Culture and Heritage of the Virgin Islands. These are August Festival Celebrations and also Boatbuilding and Sailing Legacies. The direct alphabetical arrangement will facilitate the utilization of the text.
