  • Author : Ray D. Madoff
  • Publisher : Yale University Press

  • ISBN : 0300163274
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Immortality and the Law written by Ray D. Madoff and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a riveting look at how the law responds to that distinctly American dream of immortality. While American law provides virtually no protections for the interests we hold most dear—our bodies and our reputations—when it comes to property interests, the American dead have greater control than anywhere else in the world. Moreover, these rights are growing daily. From grave robbery to Elvis impersonators, Madoff shows how the law of the dead has a direct impact on how we live. Madoff examines how the rising power of the American dead enables the deceased to exert control over their wealth forever through grandiose schemes like "dynasty trusts" and perpetual private charitable foundations and to control their creative works and identities well into the unforeseeable future. Madoff explores how the law of the dead can, in essence, extend the reach of life by granting virtual immortality to individuals. All of this comes, Madoff contends, at real costs imposed on the living.

Book Philosophers and Scholars

Download or read book Philosophers and Scholars written by Jonathan Cohen and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophers and Scholars offers a map of possible research conceptions and methods for the study of Jewish philosophy. Jonathan Cohen brings together the views of three of the greatest scholar-thinkers in the area of Jewish philosophy of the twentieth century, including Harry Austryn Wolfson (1887D1974), Julius Guttmann (1880D1950), and Leo Strauss (1899D1973). Each thinker's construction of Jewish philosophy is presented through individual definitions of Judaism and philosophy, understandings of its historical development, and analyses of the canons used in interpretations of Jewish philosophical texts. Cohen approaches the history of Jewish philosophy from a personal and fervently held Jewish philosophical perspective. This rich and fascinating text imparts new perspectives and theses on the research orientations of Wolfson, Guttmann, and Strauss. Philosophers and Scholars will captivate those interested in religious studies and philosophy.

Book What If We Don t Die

Download or read book What If We Don t Die written by Peter Hulsroj and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-09 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the very real possibility of earthly immortality and the human and societal implications of such immortality, including whether it is desirable. It looks at what makes immortality appear so attractive and at the possibility that we would be better served with longer lives and the freedom to terminate our lives at the time when life has given us all the joy, inspiration and personal development it possibly could. What If We Don’t Die? - Presents major moral dilemmas associated with human immortality, something which seems imminent due to rapidly progressing biomedical research. - Touches on big questions: is it acceptable that the immortal generation will be the last? How much life do you want? What is the purpose of life if life never ends? - Will trigger your imagination by putting a new spin on free will, current concepts of time and eternity, the possibility of multiple universes and multiple yous. What If We Don’t Die? draws extensively on philosophical and religious thought on the purpose of life and introduces novel perspectives on existence, personality and immortality based, for instance, on quantum mechanics and multiverse theory.

One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.

Download or read book The Downfall of God written by S. T. Joshi and published by Pitchstone Publishing (US&CA). This book was released on 2024-11-12 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atheism has been on the rise in the West for several decades, but its roots, including those relating to secularism, agnosticism, and freethought, run deep in Western history, philosophy, and thought. Drawing on a multitude of sources from a number of disciplines, S. T. Joshi outlines the natural origins of religious belief in primitive times and charts the slow development of secular accounts of natural phenomena in the Greco-Roman world. Adopting the "Christ myth" theory, he surveys the emergence of a new faith— Christianity— that grew out of Judaism and explores its evolution through the medieval period. He then examines the increasing schisms within the church and conflicts between religious and political entities that caused a fracturing of the monolith of Christianity and the birth of the Renaissance, which not only brought to light the literary glories of the Greco-Roman world but also led to a scientific resurgence and the development of a secular view of the cosmos. Throughout this study, Joshi paints a portrait of emerging secularism that extends well beyond the work of philosophers and scientists and covers literary figures, social and political changes, and even developments in art, architecture, and music whereby religion was increasingly shorn of its dominance in Western culture. By the end of the sixteenth century, the stage was set for the emergence of a worldview free of religion.
