Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considers current events through an examination of this seventeenth-century philosopher. In recent years there has been a revival of interest in the writings of Baltasar Gracian, a seventeenth-century Spanish Jesuit who explored the political uses of rhetoric. Gracian is best known in the United States for his bestselling collection of aphorisms entitled The Art of Worldly Wisdom. The essays in this volume focus on the relevance of Gracian's writings in our own day, when the importance of rhetoric as a discipline necessary to manage public life is indisputable. Wide-ranging in focus, these essays demonstrate that Gracian's work offers insights into the deployment of rhetoric under the "New World Order".

Book Pragmatism and Phenomenology

Download or read book Pragmatism and Phenomenology written by Sandra B. Rosenthal and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1980-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the philosophic world today, pragmatism and phenomenology can be found standing at a crossroad. Though each has arrived there via divergent paths and for very different reasons, the direction that each takes in the future may be significantly influenced by the suggestions the other has to offer. The intention of this book is to parallel the two positions in such a way that basic points of convergence and divergence are noted and accounted for in terms of their systematic significance. Each position is presented in such a manner that philosophers engrossed in one movement can enter into the other in a way which allows a real encounter to develop.

Book The Logic of the Articles in Traditional Philosophy

Download or read book The Logic of the Articles in Traditional Philosophy written by E.M. Barth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the original Dutch version of this book was presented in 1971 to the University of Leiden as a thesis for the Doctorate in philosophy, I was prevented by the academic mores of that university from expressing my sincere thanks to three members of the Philosophical Faculty for their support of and interest in my pursuits. I take the liberty of doing so now, two and a half years later. First and foremost I want to thank Professor G. Nuchelmans warmly for his expert guidance of my research. A number of my most im portant sources were brought to my attention by him. During the whole process of composing this book his criticism and encouragement were carried out in a truly academic spirit. He thereby provided working conditions that are a sine qua non for every author who is attempting to approach controversial matters in a scientific manner, conditions which, however, were not easily available at that time. In a later phase I also came into contact with Professors L. M. de Rijk and J. B. Ubbink, with both of whom I had highly stimulating discussions and exchanges of ideas. The present edition contains some entirely new sections, viz. 1-9, IV-29, V-9, V-20, VII-14 (iii), (iv), VII-17 (i), VIII-22, IX-17, IX-19, X-9 and XI-8. Section X-9 was inspired by a remark made by Professor A.

The Companion has been greatly extended and now includes a monumental 17 new essays – with topics chosen by the editors, who curated suggestions from current contributors – and almost all of the 25 original chapters have been updated to take account of recent developments in the field. In addition to providing a synoptic view of the key issues, figures, concepts, and debates, each essay introduces new and original contributions to ongoing debates, as well as addressing a number of new areas of interest, including two-dimensional semantics, modality and epistemic modals, and semantic relationism. The extended “state-of-the-art” chapter format allows the authors, all of whom are internationally eminent scholars in the field, to incorporate original research to a far greater degree than competitor volumes. Unrivaled in scope, this volume represents the best contemporary critical thinking relating to the philosophy of language.
