Book Clinical Case Studies in the Behavioral Treatment of Alcoholism

Download or read book Clinical Case Studies in the Behavioral Treatment of Alcoholism written by William M. Hay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no shortage of books on behavioral research, on behavioral research on alcoholism, or on behavioral research on alcoholism treatment. Most of the authors of chapters in this book have been involved in the writing of these books. The books and their authors have played an important role in the dramatic increase in the influence of behavioral approaches to one of our society's most troubling human problems. There are not many books, though, which detail the longitudinal course of the behavioral therapies, none doing so for behavior therapy with al coholics and problem drinkers. That this book now appears, then, is a first, made more valuable by the fact that the chapter's authors are both research ers and clinicians, willing and able to combine respect for empirical data with clinical sensitivity and compassion, concern, and commitment for their patients. The chapters in this book reveal important commonalities and telling divergencies in technique, strategy, and treatment tactics. Despite a common perspective on etiology and treatment, the authors of the chapters in this book diverge in criteria for deciding on treatment goal, choice of initial intervention target, the specifics of techniques used, and follow-up proce dures. Common to all, though, is an openness to innovation, a pragmatic appreciation of approaches that work, and a sincere respect for the patient and his or her fundamental desire for a healthy, happier, and more produc tive life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is welcomed to the series as a truly unique contribution to the literature on marital therapy. It is written for the empirically oriented psychotherapist, regardless of his or her discipline, who encounters patients with marital discord and has been distressed by the absence of an acceptable conceptual model for treatment. Psychoanalysis, behavior therapy, general system theory, and social learning theory have all made important contributions to treatment. But all too often these approaches have focused either on individual psychopathology or on the formal elements of marital interaction. This volume is the first to propose an approach to marital therapy which is clinically sophisticated, empirically based and which integrates important elements of seemingly disparate theoretical systems. The result is a cognitive-behavioral model for the treatment of marital discord which borrows from both psychoanalytic and behavioral contributions by translating them into the language of cognitive social psychology. The author documents the toll in human suffering as well as the ubiquitous nature of marriage-related problems. Despite the frequency with which marital dissatisfaction and discord are encountered in clinical practice, an amazingly high percentage of mental health professionals have received inadequate training in either the theory or technique of effective clinical intervention. The absence of a conceptual framework linking individual psychopathology to interactional difficulties has wors ened the problem for clinicians interested in conjoint treatment.

Book Methods of Family Research

Download or read book Methods of Family Research written by Irving E. Sigel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These companion volumes provide a "behind the scenes" look into the personal experiences of researchers in an effort to eliminate the lack of communication surrounding family research methodology. They show how the researchers achieved their results and why they chose particular methodologies over others. These volumes present more than just findings -- they present the real experiences of the authors in their own styles and personalities, exposing the problems, mistakes, and concerns they experienced during their research projects. Volume I presents the experiences of researchers into typical normative populations. Volume II describes work with clinical, atypical populations.

Book Personality Social Skills and Psychopathology

Download or read book Personality Social Skills and Psychopathology written by David G. Gilbert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an introduction to the study of relationships among per sonality, social skills, and psychopathology. Although research findings dur ing the last decade have made it clear that the relationships among these variables are almost always complex and mUltiply determined, many clini cians and theoreticians have not incorporated such complexities into their models of human behavior and therapeutic intervention. This discrepancy between clinical theory and research-based findings has been of special con cern to us because we have been both empirically oriented academic re searchers and practicing clinicians. It is our belief that clinical theory relat ed to personality, social skills, and psychopathology can be enriched by re search findings from a wide range of fields-from human genetics, tempera ment, and personality to family systems, affect, psychophysiology, and learning. This book is divided into an introductory chapter and three sections. The introductory chapter provides an overview of the issues in the field, compares models, and provides suggestions for further integration and ar ticulation of concepts related to personality, social skills, and psycho pathology. The book's first section presents state-of-the-art general models of interactions among personality, social skills, and psychopathology. Con nolly opens this section with a chapter that reviews longitudinal findings in dicating that personality traits predict the onset of psychopathology and marital distress. The etiology of these and related findings is the subject of other chapters in this section.
