Book A Personal Anthology

Download or read book A Personal Anthology written by Jorge Luis Borges and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handpicked works from the greatest Argentinian writer of the twentieth century. “Without Borges the modern Latin American novel simply would not exist” (Carlos Fuentes, author and diplomat). After almost a half a century of scrupulous devotion to his art, Jorge Luis Borges personally compiled this anthology of his work—short stories, essays, poems, and brief mordant “sketches,” which, in Borges’s hands, take on the dimensions of a genre unique in modern letters. In this anthology, the author has put together those pieces on which he would like his reputation to rest; they are not arranged chronologically, but with an eye to their “sympathies and differences.” A Personal Anthology, therefore, is not merely a collection, but a new composition. “An important work, by far the best yet available to the reader . . . who seeks a representative sampling of the great Argentine writer . . . the standard introduction to Borges in England and the United States.” —Saturday Review

In THE SEARCH FOR ROOTS, Levi has selected the thirty pieces of prose and poetry most important to him. Levi's many fans will be fascinated by the pieces he has chosen - with authors selected ranging from Homer, Swift and Melville to Darwin, Marco Polo and a scientist on Black Holes.

Book The Art of the Personal Essay

Download or read book The Art of the Personal Essay written by Phillip Lopate and published by Anchor. This book was released on 1997-01-15 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than four hundred years, the personal essay has been one of the richest and most vibrant of all literary forms. Distinguished from the detached formal essay by its friendly, conversational tone, its loose structure, and its drive toward candor and self-disclosure, the personal essay seizes on the minutiae of daily life-vanities, fashions, foibles, oddballs, seasonal rituals, love and disappointment, the pleasures of solitude, reading, taking a walk -- to offer insight into the human condition and the great social and political issues of the day. The Art of the Personal Essay is the first anthology to celebrate this fertile genre. By presenting more than seventy-five personal essays, including influential forerunners from ancient Greece, Rome, and the Far East, masterpieces from the dawn of the personal essay in the sixteenth century, and a wealth of the finest personal essays from the last four centuries, editor Phillip Lopate, himself an acclaimed essayist, displays the tradition of the personal essay in all its historical grandeur, depth, and diversity.

This anthology is a personal curation and not just a simple collection of poems. Each poem, handpicked by Alexander McCall Smith, leads the reader from one poem to the another. Intimate in tone, the editor shares the pleasure he finds in these poems through short epigraphs written for each piece.

Book excerpt: Although I have penned the odd verse since I was a youngster, I started writing regularly when I married. For the past forty-three years, I have composed for my wife Marion a poem for our anniversary, her birthday on the following day and for Valentines Day. She calls me a dreamy romantic, and I probably am, but I don’t apologise for it. The tradition has progressed so that I usually provide a piece for birthdays of my family, occasionally for friends, and also for special occasions. These have been my main inspiration. Two other stimuli act as my muse: a love of travel and a love of Nature. Professionally and on vacation, I have travelled widely, and on all modes of transport. I am not particularly knowledgeable about Nature, but I love observing the cycle of the seasons and their effect on birds and small animals in the area where I live.

Book excerpt: "It was 12 years ago when I moved to Mexico, leaving my comfortable, familiar life and community, driving by myself to start a new life in a foreign country. Some sort of bravado or naivete or, as my friends would say later, courage, allowed me to pooh-pooh concerns about all the unknowns- culture, language, customs-and head off nonetheless."And so begins one of the more than two dozen essays in this anthology, written by "regular" women about their "regular" lives and how they decided to change everything and move to Mexico. In simple, engaging words straight from the heart, the contributors to Why We Left share their plans and preparations, hardships and challenges, joys and satisfactions as their journeys to new lives in Mexico unfold.
