Book Performance Analysis of Mobile Ad Hoc Networking Routing Protocols

Download or read book Performance Analysis of Mobile Ad Hoc Networking Routing Protocols written by Lee K. Thong and published by . This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a simulation and performance evaluation analysis of the various routing protocols that have been proposed for the Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) environment using the Network Simulator-2 (NS-2) tool. Many routing protocols have been proposed by the academic communities for possible practical implementation of a MANET in military, governmental and commercial environments. Four (4) such routing protocols were chosen for analysis and evaluation: Ad Hoc On-demand Distance Vector routing (AODV), Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), Destination-Sequenced Distance Vector routing (DSDV) and Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR). NS-2 is developed and maintained by the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute (ISI). Leveraging on NS-2 s simulation capabilities, the key performance indicators of the routing protocols were analyzed such as data network throughput, routing overhead generation, data delivery delay as well as energy efficiency or optimization. The last metric is explored, especially due to its relevance to the mobile environment. Energy is a scare commodity in a mobile ad hoc environment. Any routing software that attempts to minimize energy usage will prolong the livelihood of the devices used in the battlefield. Three important mobility models are considered, namely, Random Waypoint, Manhattan Grid, and Reference Point Group Mobility. The application of these three models will enhance the realism of simulation to actual real life mobility in an urban or military setup scenario. The performance of the routing protocols in varied node density, mobility speed as well as loading conditions have been studied. The results of the simulation will provide invaluable insights to the performance of the selected routing protocols. This can serve as a deciding factor for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) in their selection of the most suitable routing protocols tailored to their specific needs.

Book Simulation and Evaluation of Routing Protocols for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks MANETs

Download or read book Simulation and Evaluation of Routing Protocols for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks MANETs written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are of much interest to both the research community and the military because of the potential to establish a communication network in any situation that involves emergencies. Examples are search-and-rescue operations, military deployment in hostile environment, and several types of police operations. One critical open issue is how to route messages considering the characteristics of these networks. The nodes act as routers in an environment without a fixed infrastructure, the nodes are mobile, the wireless medium has its own limitations compared to wired networks, and existing routing protocols cannot be employed at least without modifications. Over the last few years, a number of routing protocols have been proposed and enhanced to solve routing in MANETs. It is not clear how those different protocols perform under different environments. One protocol may be the best in one network configuration but the worst in another. This thesis describes a study of those protocols that are best from a DoD perspective. These wireless mobile networks were simulated under different mobility and traffic scenarios to evaluate their performance. The results showed which protocols performed better under several relevant scenarios and exposed a number of design flaws.

Book excerpt: Ad-hoc networks are the particular type of networks, which are established by using more than one node in a specific arbitrary way to connect each other. These types of network systems can works without the fixed infrastructure for networks. The special feature which tries to makes their deployment quick and in the easy way. An Ad-hoc network can be utilize to provide network facilities in the places, where not to possible to form a fixed network, and where it is a cost effective to implement fixed network. The rapid implementation in the areas without the infrastructure which is often implies that the network users must explore an area and also form teams that in turn coordinate between themselves to create a specific task force or a nice mission in network simulation, also we can have individual random mobility and group mobility and also motion along with preplanned routes. Mobility model can be have major effect on the selection of a routing technique can then effect performance.

Book New Methodologies for Performance Modeling of Routing Protocols in Wireless Networks

Download or read book New Methodologies for Performance Modeling of Routing Protocols in Wireless Networks written by Andres Medina and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile wireless ad-hoc networks (MANETs) are being designed to be a key element in future battlefield communications, as well as a supplement to cellular networks. As a consequence of rapid changes in the topology of the network, routing packets in MANETs is a challenging task that has attracted considerable attention. However a comprehensive performance evaluation of routing protocols remains an open problem. This dissertation proposes a novel methodology for the performance evaluation of routing protocols for MANETs. The method is based on a "Divide and Conquer" approach and it provides a systematic and disciplined way to evaluate the performance of routing protocols. The full routing system is decomposed into components (subsystems). Performance models are developed for each component. Then, the performance model of the full system is the interconnection of the performance models of the components. The component based approach makes practical the performance evaluation of routing protocols, by allowing researchers to reuse a subset of the previous developed models to evaluate the performance of new ideas.

Book Simulation and Performance Analysis of the AD HOC On Demand Distance Vector Routing Protocol for Tactical Mobile AD HOC Networks

Download or read book Simulation and Performance Analysis of the AD HOC On Demand Distance Vector Routing Protocol for Tactical Mobile AD HOC Networks written by Tyrone P. Theriot and published by . This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a simulation and analysis of the Ad Hoc On- Demand Distance Vector Routing Protocol (AODV) for mobile ad hoc network (MANET) environments using the Network Simulator 2 (NS2) tool. AODV is being suggested for possible implementation in the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) for the United States military. Utilizing an AODV model resident in NS2, the simulation focuses on key performance parameters that include the packet delivery fraction, routing loss, buffer loss, total loss, throughput and goodput. The AODV node movement and traffic connection files have been generated to measure the network performance for a given environment using specific parameters. The results reported in this thesis indicate that the network environment size, packet rate and offered load are critical to the network performance. Node velocity played a minimal role in affecting the overall network performance.

Book Mobile Ad Hoc Network Protocols Based on Dissimilarity Metrics

Download or read book Mobile Ad Hoc Network Protocols Based on Dissimilarity Metrics written by M. Günes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief presents the design and performance evaluation of communication protocols based on dissimilarity metrics for wireless multihop networks. Dissimilarity metrics are used to infer the network topology based solely on local information to efficiently disseminate packets throughout the network, reducing both redundancy and congestion which is covered in this brief. The performance evaluation of the proposed communication protocols has been conducted by both meticulous simulation and real experimentation in a wireless multi-hop testbed. The obtained results in this brief corroborate the hypothesis regarding the validity of dissimilarity metrics, which can be used to design efficient communication protocols. This SpringerBrief is a good starting point for advanced-level students studying computer science and electrical engineering, as well as researchers and professionals working in this field.

Book Routing Protocols for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Download or read book Routing Protocols for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks written by Daniel Lang and published by VDM Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is a mobile, wireless network that does not necessitate a pre-existing infrastructure. The routing infrastructure needs to be established in a distributed, self-organized way. Many routing protocols for MANETs have been proposed, and some evaluating work has been conducted. The large number of the proposed routing protocols and evaluations makes it difficult to keep track of the development and to get an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of routing protocols. The author Daniel Lang analyses evaluation techniques from the past and describes common problems with simulation based evaluation of routing protocols for MANETs and how to resolve them. Simulation scenarios are examined and evaluated, sample applications are suggested and relations to past and present evaluations are drawn. A comprehensive number of MANET routing protocols is examined and categorized and similarities are deduced and presented. It is proposed that these can be used to reduce the number of experiments. This book is targeted at scientists and institutions conducting research about or pursuing the implementation of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks.

Book Performance Evaluation of Routing Protocols Using NS 2 and Realistic Traces on Driving Simulator

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Routing Protocols Using NS 2 and Realistic Traces on Driving Simulator written by Mingye Chen and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid growth in wireless mobile communication technology, Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) has emerged as a promising method to effectively solve transportation-related issues. So far, most of researches on VANETs have been conducted with simulations as the real-world experiment is expensive. A core problem affecting the fidelity of simulation is the mobility model employed. In this thesis, a sophisticated traffic simulator capable of generating realistic vehicle traces is introduced. Combined with network simulator NS-2, we used this tool to evaluate the general performance of several routing protocols and studied the impact of intersections on simulation results. We show that static nodes near the intersection tend to become more active in packet delivery with higher transferred throughput.

Book Topology Control Routing Protocols and Performance Evaluation for Mobile Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

Download or read book Topology Control Routing Protocols and Performance Evaluation for Mobile Wireless Ad Hoc Networks written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) is a collection of wireless mobile nodes forming a temporary network without the support of any established infrastructure or centralized administration. There are many potential applications based the techniques of MANETs, such as disaster rescue, personal area networking, wireless conference, military applications, etc. MANETs face a number of challenges for designing a scalable routing protocol due to their natural characteristics. Guaranteeing delivery and the capability to handle dynamic connectivity are the most important issues for routing protocols in MANETs. In this dissertation, we will propose four algorithms that address different aspects of routing problems in MANETs. Firstly, in position based routing protocols to design a scalable location management scheme is inherently difficult. Enhanced Scalable Location management Service (EnSLS) is proposed to improve the scalability of existing location management services, and a mathematical model is proposed to compare the performance of the classical location service, GLS, and our protocol, EnSLS. The analytical model shows that EnSLS has better scalability compared with that of GLS. Secondly, virtual backbone routing can reduce communication overhead and speedup the routing process compared with many existing on-demand routing protocols for routing detection. In many studies, Minimum Connected Dominating Set (MCDS) is used to approximate virtual backbones in a unit-disk graph. However finding a MCDS is an NP-hard problem. In the dissertation, we develop two new pure localized protocols for calculating the CDS. One emphasizes forming a small size initial near-optimal CDS via marking process, and the other uses an iterative synchronized method to avoid illegal simultaneously removal of dominating nodes. Our new protocols largely reduce the number of nodes in CDS compared with existing methods. We show the efficiency of our approach through both theoretical analysis and simulation experiments. Finally, using multiple redundant paths for routing is a promising solution. However, selecting an optimal path set is an NP hard problem. We propose the Genetic Fuzzy Multi-path Routing Protocol (GFMRP), which is a multi-path routing protocol based on fuzzy set theory and evolutionary computing.
