Book A People Heeds Not Scripture

Download or read book A People Heeds Not Scripture written by Jillian L. Ross and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-03-27 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Everyone did what was right in their own eyes.” This well-known indictment rumbles across the epilogue of Judges, denouncing God’s people as wayward. Yet understanding the source of Israel’s degenerative and downward spiral comes from an oft-overlooked declaration: Yahweh is testing Israel’s fidelity to the commandments he gave “by the hand of Moses.” By employing covert allusions rather than explicit quotations Judges contrasts the obvious sins of Israel with veiled reminders of the law that they have abandoned. In this volume, Jillian Ross employs current insights from literary theory, establishing a robust methodology for identifying allusions in the text. Once applied, the allusions to the Law, especially as presented in Deuteronomy, display three clear peaks: the prologue, Gideon narrative, and epilogue. The results suggest that Judges teaches a Deuteronomistic concept that the Israelites failed to obey the Torah, particularly its call for covenant fidelity in worship and warfare, as given to them “by the hand of Moses.”

Book excerpt: Several years ago, I happened to come across a sermon by a pastor who delineated several spiritual dangers inherent in the field of psychology. Initially, I was not happy about what I read in this sermon because the writer attacked most, if not all, that I had been taught as a psychologist. But, as the Holy Spirit worked on my heart and led me to further study this issue, I finally had to admit that there are many concepts in secular psychology that are in direct conflict with the Word of God. What an eye-opening experience it was for me! Dear reader, as you go through this book it is my prayer that you will allow your mind to be opened to the information that will be shared. It is my hope that we, as individuals, will learn that we can turn to God for help with every problem that comes our way. It is also my desire that, on a corporate level, we will realize that God's Word contains all that we need to have a flourishing, vibrant church. All things are possible with God!--Magna Parks, Ph.D.

Book excerpt: "People of good will of every faith and nation should join hands and work in close cooperation, to help ensure that Islamic teachings are universally understood and applied in accord with its primary message of rahmah, and thus serve as a conduit through which God's infinite love and compassion may flow to all sentient beings. Given the current dynamics in the Muslim world -- and the institutional paralysis of the West, in the face of Muslim extremism -- this is admittedly an ambitious or even daunting endeavor. Yet for that very reason, it is a task worthy of anyone who feels the stirring of God's love in their breast, and the whispering of a conscience that refuses to yield all that is most precious in life to the forces of hatred, intimidation and violence."~ Former Indonesian president and Nahdlatul Ulama Chairman KH. Abdurrahman Wahid, Rahmah (Universal Love and Compassion)"I regard the work of Humanitarian Islam and the Movement for Shared Civilizational Values as one of the most pathbreaking and important developments in world politics and cross-civilizational ethics in our generation. No event that I know of is more timely, urgent, or well conceived."~ Robert Hefner, Professor of Anthropology & International Relations at Boston University and President, American Institute for Indonesian Studies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Mission is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exist because worship doesn't. Worship is ultimate.' John Piper's contemporary classic draws on key biblical texts to demonstrate that worship is the ultimate goal of the church and that proper worship fuels missionary outreach. Piper offers a biblical defence of God's supremacy in all things, providing a sound theological foundation for missions. He examines whether Jesus is the only way to salvation and issues a passionate plea for God-centredness in the missionary enterprise, seeking to define the scope of the task and the means for reaching 'all nations'. Let the Nations Be Glad! is a trusted resource for missionaries, pastors, church leaders, youth workers, seminary students, and all who want to connect their labours to God's global purposes. This third edition has been revised and expanded throughout and includes new material on the 'prosperity gospel'.

Book Who Needs a New Covenant

Download or read book Who Needs a New Covenant written by Michael Duane Morrison and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although covenant is a major theme in Hebrews, Morrison contends all mention of covenant can be deleted without damaging the coherence of the epistle or its christological conclusions. What role, then, does the covenant motif have in the epistle? The arguments in Hebrews are aimed at a Jewish audience--they ignore the needs and religious options relevant to Gentiles. For the readers, the Sinai covenant was the only relevant conceptual competitor to Christ. First-century Jews looked to the Abrahamic and Mosaic covenants as the basis of their obligations to God and God's promises toward them. Although most Jewish writers merged these covenants as if they were one, the author of Hebrews does not--he retains the Abrahamic promises while arguing that the Mosaic covenant is obsolete. The covenant concept supports the exhortations of Hebrews in two ways: 1) it provides the link between priesthood, worship rituals, and other laws, and 2) it enables the author to argue for allegiance to the community as allegiance to Christ.

Book Theological Exegesis of Scripture Volume I

Download or read book Theological Exegesis of Scripture Volume I written by Paul C. McGlasson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many books about theological exegesis; there are far fewer books of theological exegesis. This volume on the Pentateuch begins a six-volume work of theological exegesis that will span select passages from the whole of the Christian Bible. The aim is to read Scripture according to its theological shape as a witness to the living claim of God upon church and world, made known in Jesus Christ. The theological frame of the Pentateuch is grounded in the freely given promise of God, which gathers not only the people of God but humanity—and the whole creation—into the one purpose of God’s redemptive love. Indeed, we live by that selfsame promise today and must struggle to understand and act in our world in light of it. The book and the series are intended for teachers, pastors, students, and readers attentive to the theological and spiritual dimensions of the biblical witness in all its brilliance and mystery.
