Download or read book A Peep Into the Early History of India written by Ramkrishna Gopal Bhandarkar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Peep Into the Early History of India: From the Foundation of the Maurya Dynasty to the Downfall of the Imperial Gupta Dynasty, (322 B. C. Circa 500 A. C.) The essay begins with the rise of Buddhism. As Sir Ramkrishna points out, Buddhism is only a sect-oi Hinduism. Its tenets are not even novel. Its chief doctrine, viz. That it is karma which transmigrates, is, anticipated in the Upanishads. It did not, contrary to popular opinion, seek to undermine caste. But it did. Deny the authority of the Vedas and the efficacy of the Vedic sacrifices, and this was the real cause of the hatred of the Brahmans towards it. Buddhism, with its insist ence on the ethical side of religion and its cosmopolita nism, had a salutary effect on Indian politics. It eu couraged liberal intercourse with the outside world which Brahmanism discouraged. Under the various Buddhistic dynasties, shipping flourished, ambassadors went and came to and from Syria and Egypt, and later, Rome. The Bodhisatva himself, according to the Jdtakas, was once born as the. Son of a master-mariner of. Broach. The Bodhisatva and Jains, like the Puritans of' 17th century England, were the trading-classes. Sir. Ramkrishna mentions in his essay on the Early History of the Deccan how much the great cathedral caves of. Karla and other places in Western India owed to the guilds of merchants of the time. With the Brahmanic revival and the insertion in the codes of Mann of regula tions which branded those who ventured overseas - with the stigma of impurity, commerce declined and India dropped out of her position among-the trading nations of theeast. Book Greater India and the Indian Expansionist Imagination c 1885 1965

Download or read book Greater India and the Indian Expansionist Imagination c 1885 1965 written by Jolita Zabarskaitė and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-11-07 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first systematic study of the genealogy, discursive structures, and political implications of the concept of ‘Greater India’, implying a Hindu colonization of Southeast Asia, and used by extension to argue for a past Indian greatness as a colonial power, reproducible in the present and future. From the 1880s to the 1960s, protagonists of the Greater India theme attempted to make a case for the importance of an expansionist Indian civilisation in civilizing Southeast Asia. The argument was extended to include Central Asia, Africa, North and South America, and other regions where Indian migrants were to be found. The advocates of this Indocentric and Hindu revivalist approach, with Hindu and Indian often taken to be synonymous, were involved in a quintessentially parochial project, despite its apparently international dimensions: to justify an Indian expansionist imagination that viewed India’s past as a colonizer and civilizer of other lands as a model for the restoration of that past greatness in the future. Zabarskaite shows that the crucial ideologues and elements used for the formation of the construct of Greater India can be traced to the svadeśī movement of the turn of the century, and that Greater India moved easily between the domains of the scholarly and the popular as it sought to establish itself as a form of nationalist self-assertion.

Book excerpt: We take it for granted that some historical figures become heroes, and others do not. Chandragupta Maurya evolved from obscure ruler to contemporary national icon. The key moment in the making of this Indian hero was a meeting by the banks of the River Indus between Chandragupta and Seleucus, founder of the Seleucid empire and one of Alexander the Great’s generals, in c.305-3 BC. This significant event was a moment of peace-making at the end of conflict. But no reliable account exists in early sources, and it is not even clear which ruler was victorious in battle. This uncertainty enabled British and Indian historians of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to interpret the sources in radically different ways. With Chandragupta representing India and Seleucus standing in for Britain, British scholars argued that Seleucus defeated Chandragupta, while Indian academics contended the opposite. The writing and reception of history fundamentally influences how we engage with the past, and the evolving colonial and post-colonial relationship between Britain and India is crucial here. In India, the image of Chandragupta as an idealised hero who vanquished the foreign invader has prevailed and found expression in contemporary popular culture. In plays, films, television series, comic books and historical novels, Chandragupta is the powerful and virtuous Hindu ruler par excellence. The path to this elevated standing is charted in this book.
